    Excess? Sounds about right.
  • coolhardware - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Just a quick note, compared to the iPhone XS Max, the Samsung Note 9 actually has a slightly larger screen area :

    16.11 square inches (5.8" h x 2.8" w) [6.4" diagonal Note 9]
    vs.
    16.09 square inches (5.9" h x 2.7" w) [6.5" diagonal iPhone XS Max])

PS and of a higher pixel density:
    514 vs 456

"How will Apple iterate on the iPhone X design? What's happening to Apple's cheaper, traditional phone models? What will be this year's "notch"? "

Why do you pretend you don't know? This year it has been the most leaked iPhone ever.
  • serendip - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Let's hope the ridiculous leaked naming doesn't stick. iPhone Xr, Xs, Xs Max? Those sound more like halfassed Motorola product names. Apple should have gone for iPhone Lite, iPhone and iPhone Max, with 2018 signifying the release year.
  • willis936 - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

I like this naming scheme. Xr and Xrs iPhone. Don't forget the little Xjr as well.

They don’t do PowerVR anymore, so I don’t think so.

Two big core only 15% up ......
  • Glaurung - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

"Two big core only 15% up"

    At 50% lower power draw.
  • name99 - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

That 15% isn't "conclusive" till we see the iPad story. It's possible they could run a lot faster, but a deliberate decision was made to limit power. This makes sense, given that most people complain more about phone battery life than about performance; and the things that do result in performance complaints are the non-CPU silicon (ISP, GPU, NPU).

More interesting will be the A12X and what it can do given (slightly) less severe power demands...
  • zeeBomb - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

    7nm A12 chip though.....yo..
  • fred666 - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

  • lucam - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Will you review those new iPhones or you will skip them again like last year?
  • yeeeeman - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Xs is like it was for older iPhones. You had iPhone 5 and then 5s. Now there is X and Xs
  • aspelluri - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

    @AnandTech
Any update on iOS release date?
  • weevilone - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Wish I could order the watch now, love my S2 (that I already traded off).

Just need the iPads so I can hook the wife up, and need a Mac Mini. Apple abandoned the Mac Pro for so long that I mostly moved off, but still have a few apps in my workflow and want this huge tower gone.

Really bummed there's no SE phone replacement. I'm way over $1000 phones.
  • eva02langley - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

1449$ US.... please people, stop buying Apple...

Stand back, think, breathe... and repeat this... it is just a phone... it is just a phone...
  • name99 - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

You can buy an iPhone7 for $450. On eBay you can buy a second hand iPhone for less, that'll likely work for at least three or four years.

Who made you the expert on how other people should spend their money?
  • eva02langley - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

If they are pushing for 512GB of storage, I presume sd cards are still not supported...

Use your money the way you want, a sane and smart person would buy a mid range phone, and invest the 1000$.

I don't need a BMW, but some people believed they cannot drive if it is not one. Same thing for iPhones...

It is simply sad. I hope you enjoy Foxconn cheap labor with your bloodphone.
  • fred666 - Thursday, September 13, 2018 - link

$450 for a 2 years old phone is still a ripoff
  • cfenton - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

You say that like flagship Android phones are cheap. The Galaxy Note 9 is $999+, the S9 is/was ~$750. I agree that $1000 is way to much for a phone, but it's not like the competition is significantly cheaper. Fortunately, if you step down from the flagship level, the prices get a lot more reasonable.
  • eva02langley - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

I am saying that as someone who knows that I will never buy a phone with a price that is so indecent.

What the hell is that phone doing more than a mid range phone... cooking a turkey? Turning into a lightsaber?

The answer is absolutely nothing that worth the extra 1000$.

Even a RTX 2080 TI is cheaper... says everything.
  • SaolDan - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

    PREACH IT BROTHER!!!!
  • darcotech - Thursday, September 13, 2018 - link

Competition is that expensive because Apple started that game and they sold a lot of devices in that range of prices, so naturally, others followed.

The expensive electronics these days are result of people just buying because its "a la mode", to show off, even though they will use just 5% of its capacity. Sad, sad days...
  • fred666 - Thursday, September 13, 2018 - link

Competition IS significantly cheaper because you can get discounts.
The Galaxy S9 was discounted below 50% where I live not long ago. Therefore it was cheaper to get a GS9 than an iPhone 6S.

Any info/rumors on the amount of RAM in these?
  • sfwineguy - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

I was wondering the same thing - I guess we'll have to wait for a teardown as usual, as Apple treats info about RAM like it's a state secret.

I also didn't hear anything about 5G, but I guess that was a foregone conclusion. My phone still works pretty well, so I might wait another year and get 5G capability.
  • Round - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Apple's annual intelligence test. If you buy one of these over priced devices, you definitely failed and apple loves you.....
  • eastcoast_pete - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Thanks Andrei! A couple of questions that might have been answered during Q&A, if they had any:
    1. Starting with the end of the presentation: was the availability slide (apparently in alphabetical order) for the homepod? It omits some some countries, such as Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands. It would be big news if that slide is for the new iPhones and the watch, too.
    2. The new watch is indeed a big step forward if it lives up to the presentation. Having the new watch approved as a medical device also raises the question of HIPAA compliance. If I recall correctly, Apple's devices, including the watch, send data "home" (frequently, and a lot). In the US, privacy and security of electronically stored health data is regulated by HIPAA, and most EU countries have similar or even stricter regulations. Is Apple set up to handle this?
Last, but not least: THANK YOU, APPLE! I do not own any Apple stock or iOS device, but I thank you for going against the trend of the shrinking phablet. The screen size of the new XS max will (hopefully) reverse that trend also in the Android space. This is one of the things Apple really gets right: offer several sizes of a flagship phone, and don't tie flagship specs to screen size. To each his or her own! I am a fan of large screens (big hands, hard to type otherwise), and most Android phone makers have shrunk the screen size (by area and even by diagonal) to about 6" at 18:9, meaning they are too small for people like me, and still too big for those wanting a compact phone. maybe this will wake 'em up.
  • djayjp - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

    "a massively bigger display"...

    5.8 / 5.5 = 5% bigger
  • sfwineguy - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

But the new larger screen is 6.8, not 5.8. Using your approach to the math (I didn't compare pixel counts), 24% increase, which is pretty big.
  • eva02langley - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Is it going to bent again?
  • djayjp - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Nevermind I didn't see that the one I was comparing was actually much smaller than the old model. The comparative XS is 6.5" vs 5.5" which is pretty significant I must admit.
  • sfwineguy - Saturday, September 15, 2018 - link

Hey, I managed to get it wrong too while disagreeing with you. Speed kills.
  • Sttm - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Sir, how can we get a $1.5T valuation? RAISE iPHONE PRICES 50%! The SHEEP will still buy! iPhones costing more than MacBook Pros is clearly the future people!
  • ibnMuhammad_ - Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - link

Perhaps this has been discussed elsewhere(?), but I find it intriguing to say the least that once the king of fabrication Intel, seems to be struggling with 7nm production, while Qualcomm, Huawei, and Apple - thanks to TSMC - have surprisingly and quite quickly transitioned to 7nm!

    What happened to Intel?
  • mkozakewich - Sunday, September 16, 2018 - link

They did struggle with it, though. Notice how they didn't transition to 7nm three years ago?
Literally every leading-edge fab was waiting for one company to make the new Step-and-Scan systems that would be used to fabricate at that size.
