Any word on price? It looks good, but I assume it will be $1000+, which is way more than I want to spend on a phone.
Also, who's the audience for Bixby? Who do they think is getting excited that they've made their third-rate (or fourth-rate) voice assistant slightly better?
Dex being available without a dock is cool. I hope to see more phones doing something like that. Being able to just bring my phone to a presentation and controlling it with the S Pen would be useful.
Huawei P20/P20 Pro can do this using non-proprietary methods, because the phone supports USB-C altmode for DisplayPort, so you can use any generic USB-C to HDMI (or DisplayPort) adapter. It then outputs full 1080p desktop, including running apps in movable windows, chrome with tabs (like on ChromeOS I guess), and giving a pretty decent desktop experience.
Also it being USB-C means you can plug in a generic USB-C dock with ethernet, HDMI, and some USB-A ports and use it as a docking station/desktop. Let's see Samdong do this with their DeX shit.
Oh, and as long as they keep rear fingerprint and idiotic edge glass, I'm not buying another Samsung (Happy S7 flat owner, replaced by P20)
I just need an upgrade over the S8+. Need to upgrade every year as the battery and other stuff wears down and performance of apps become more demanding to the point where you cannot do critical stuff you need to have happen on the phone when out in the world on time.
Thats because programmers are fucking lazy retards writing "apps" in shit like electron/javascript, making slow bloated cross-platform garbage. Android being garbage to begin with, compounded with shit written/intepreted apps making it even worse. How the fuck is it possible that 2-3ghz 4-8core phone is TOO FUCKING SLOW to run some useless shit like Snapchat? holy fuck.
You are right. MOST phone apps are ridiculously bloated, including the default dialer and messaging apps, and especially the music app. These are the simplest apps ever made. They should be lightning fast, and less than 200kb each.
Nevermind the AWFUL non-intuitive user interface in most apps (everything is randomly all over the place, no labels, pointless sequence of multiple inputs to get anything done, have to press "back" multiple times just to navigate within the app)..... and operating system that is impossible to truly multi-task with.
I’m afraid that Snapchat and Facebook are smarter than the people using it.
For them the greatest cost position on the balance sheet is electrical energy and while they have done everything already to reduce energy consumption on their side, the really smart thing is to move the computation towards the data: You can collect and analyze more, don’t need to pay for transporting data that’s not interesting and best of all you don’t even need to pay for the compute.
So, where Fecebook and Co. used to take your data to pay for “connecting people”, they now just sell the analytics their apps have computed on your phone and you pay twice, while they are left with the gains. With all that new inferencing hardware that’s now being put into phones, sometimes without even being advertised, at least some of the spying will require a little less energy, but only with apps from the ‘smarter’ vendors.
still waiting on Samsung to release the s9 active. not sure upgrading from my s8 active which already has a 4000mAh battery, nice flat screen and a built in case to protect from drops will be worth it..
What does “leading” mean? Estimates are that Samsung sells between 4 and 8 million Notes around the world a year, and 30-32 million Galaxy S models, numbers that have fallen four years straight.

Need the ability to disable the bloatware w/o going through advanced steps to do it so battery life becomes longer.sjankech - Friday, August 10, 2018 - link
