Damn, this is already their 4th phone with the Kirin 970. Honor View 10 also launched with one.

Thanks for the picture. It looks like the AI is reliably improving them, though mostly it's HDR + more colors ?
  • jvl - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Don't forget the smoothing and extra-big depth of field xD

    Their segmentation network sucks.

As the parent of a black cat, camera enhancements are welcome additions. It's difficult to take decent looking photographs of kitty without really bright ambient light so sharing what kitty is up to with relatives and friends is a huge pain. Anything that can improve that situation is worth whatever price a company ends up charging for it.

Curse honor for inflicting enhanced cat pictures upon the world.
  • Lord of the Bored - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Look on the bright side: It also enhances dog pictures.
  • Ian Cutress - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

    And Panda pictures.

I think enhanced cat pics are far better than blurry ones. Anyone that has tried taking indoor photos of a black cat will probably agree that its something that modern digital cameras embedded in phones just don't do very well. I'm so sick of taking like four or more photos of my cat just so I can pick through them to figure out which one looks makes kitty look the least like a strange, blurry void in the Universe.

    gorgeous looking phone.
decent battery size, with seemingly nice "specs" otherwise.

The only thing I personally do not like and wish makers would absolutely get away from doing is glass front AND back....front I can understand (need it for the display after all) but glass back is just asking for expensive repairs (increased cost to purchase) and more likely to shatter if tapped the wrong way....I rather a full metal or plastic back to prevent costly repairs if and when needed..........not to mention, glass back tend to be very slippery which is an extra not good thing.

comes with a 20w supercharger in the box? if so, this is a good thing, pricing puts around $398-$490 CAD, not exactly bargain cost, but at least is not $900+ (based on the 8-9 pricing) likely would be in the ~$650-$800 (plus ship/tax) here in Canada (based on newegg.ca pricing)

the Honor View10 (V10) sees "similar" specs but increases battery size to 3750Mah..5v/4.5a charger,
    1080x2160 resolution?

That's for wireless charging. You don't want your induction coil inside a Faraday cage. So instead of replacing the aluminum with plastic, they replace it with glass. Selling you lots of repairs is just an added benefit.
  • nicolaim - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Except that this model doesn't have wireless charging!
  • risa2000 - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

No recent Huawei phone (from Mate 10 /Pro/Lite) has wireless charging. It seems Huawei does not consider it important.
  • Ian Cutress - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

I believe the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS does.
  • risa2000 - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Right. Thanks for pointing that out. It even seems to be some kind of boosted version of wireless charging. I would love to have it on my Mate 10. Pity Huawei did not push it mainstream.
  • StevoLincolnite - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Materials other than Plastic and Metal exists you know.
  • close - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Gorgeous? There's nothing setting it apart from so many phones already on the market.

"In a world filled with rectangular blocks with displays, it takes a large effort to differentiate"
Guess this boils down to copying the iPhoneX. Design-wise at least.
  • ionuts - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Ugh... Xiaomi Mi 5s had the first ultrasonic under-glass fingerprint scanner.
On that note, why would you prefer that on the back of the phone?
  • 1_rick - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Because if the sensor is well-placed, your finger more or less naturally lands on it when you pick it up.

The down side is that if the sensor's on the front you don't have to pick the phone up just to wake it up.

Personally, having used both, I prefer a front sensor.

I just came to the comments to learn how this is, somehow, not copying Apple.
  • tipoo - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Is "AI" just applying a current buzzword to what Image Signal Processors already do?
  • Ian Cutress - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

For the photo stuff it is pattern recognition but built from trained neural networks. The inference runs on the dedicated NPU silicon for lower power operation. Technically you can run this inference on the CPU, but it is slow and power hungry.
  • ianmills - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

I like the pic with Ian. Ian only realizes himself as intelligent but the AI recognizes the minions in the background as intelligent too XD
  • boozed - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Add "AI" to the list of terms that have become completely meaningless thanks to the marketing department.
  • Retycint - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Sooner or later someone's going to start branding the bog-standard predictive text and autocorrect keyboard as "AI keyboard" as well
  • MrSpadge - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

As soon as it uses an artificial neuronal network, yes.
  • 1_rick - Monday, May 21, 2018 - link

Have you never run into marketers before? What makes you think the lack of AI features will stop them from calling something AI-enhanced?
  • South_DL - Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - link

Horrible clone of the iPhone 10, like all the continental Chinese products.
  • Narg - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

No jack, bump at top of screen, and Chinese spyware. No thanks.
  • Narg - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Oops, it does have a jack. These guys usually don't do that. But still, the spyware thing. Oh well.
  • nirolf - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Is Honor good with Android/security updates?

Front fingerprint scanner & 3,5 mm jack = buy! (wish it was a bit smaller though)
  • T2k - Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - link

Is this in essence a Huawei P20?

When Honor 10 was first launched on the market, its popularity was very high. According to reports, online sales reached 50 million euros in just 2 minutes. This is unprecedented, and it can be regarded as a new record for Honor Mobile. Why is Honor 10 so popular? Why is the attention so high? The Honor 10 uses the Kirin 970 processor, and the Honor 10 can intelligently distinguish people, sky, plants, etc. when taking pictures, and then perform automatic color adjustment to achieve the best results.
