Ian, quick Q: is a full review coming? If so, any timelines? Thinking of pulling the trigger and just wanted some details on camera quality etc with the thorough Anandtech take. All missing stuff aside, this is prob the most VFM SD845 option this generation. Only competition in this range will be the Mi8 once it launches. PS: I am based in India, so we do get decent phones for a change, and the Pixel 2 XL/s9/iphones are double the price of the 1+6.
err , was not supposed to be a reply. While at it though, contact based wireless charging is rather pointless. Contacless is emerging now from folks like Energous but might take a while before we see it in phones and charging such a device at substantial distances is rather difficult.

I am never going back myself. The only time I use a cord now is in the truck for Android Auto, and even then I am hopping my next truck has a wireless charging pad above the dash and the new wifi based Android Auto.
I'm actually that one person. Got a wireless charger for free with the S6 edge back then. At first it was pretty awesome, but then i discover fast charging and never went back. Sure being wireless is great but for me I would take speed > wireless every time.
They do, I have one. They aren't as fast as fast cable charging. I use the wireless for bedside charging (as when I'm mashing around blindly in a morning to shut the damn thing up it's easy to pull everything else with it as the cable clotheslines everything on the table) and if I'm in a rush I just plug in to the Samsung fast charger. Wireless is great for convenience in one sense but also a pain if you want to use it whilst charging. I tried wireless right back with the palm pre and never really caught on. These days I think there are solid arguments for both. The main one for me being reducing usage of the USB port which takes a hammering especially with headphones and so on now using it. If you want to be using that port multiple times a day, it strikes me as a potential point of failure.
I'm the person you can't imagine. At least with my S7, the wireless pad was really fussy about the positions it would charge the phone in, and after one-too-many nights where my phone didn't charge and thus was dead and my alarm didn't work, I went back to cable charging. I'm not anti-wireless charging but it is not a dealbreaker, and it doesn't bother me in the least that the OP6 doesn't have it. Would it be nice to have it? Sure! But cables work fine, and I care about the phone functionality and price a hell of a lot more.
Contact based is great. It's all about saving those USB ports... these damn smartphones need constant charging. Knackering a USB port would prematurely put a device out of commission. It's an absolute must these days, and I have no idea why it wasn't universally adopted after Palm introduced the Pre with the FANTASTIC touchstone charger. That was back in 2009!!!!

After using various Lumias in the last 5 years, just cannot imagine using wired charging on daily basis. Have wireless charger at home, at work... planing to put one in my car (unless I get car with one built in).
Still have work phone with USB charging... due to replacement later this year... and should I even say that next one will have wireless charging. I get reminded how much I appreciate wireless charging every time I have to dig out USB cable under papers and what not on my desk. At least phone has type-c port so I don't have to check cable orientation, but still... such a nonsense.

Something doesn't add up. The Sony IMX 363 is listed on wiki @ 12.2 MP. Is there a special version they have or did the specs get misprinted somewhere?

1. Useless glass design. Why make the back glass if you wont add wireless charging?
2. Notch. There is still a bottom bezel so whats the point of the notch???
3. Higher price: This is going to be $20-50 more expensive than the 5T, why? You have not added anything of value, in fact you made the device even more fragile.

Wow, that is a great price for the internals that you get. Rare to find an up-front price for a phone here in the Great White North for less than $900 CAD. Still more than I'd be willing to pay up-front ($400 is about the limit), but it's getting there.
Now, where are all the ~5" phones with 1080p screens and SD660/670 SoCs? 3-4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and uSD slot? That's what we need more of around here!

Heh, wireless charging. . . I look over at my Touchstone charger every now and again. . . It just worked out of the box with the Palm Pre2 I had, and was so convenient. . . 8 frikkin' years ago. I wish this industry would prioritize things that are actually meaningful to me instead of the junk they focus on.
I agreed with you that their answer to not have wireless charging is weak. It is great for people who use it. For those who don't, you don't lose anything. Cost wise should be negligible. If it cuts into margin, just increase the sales prices by a few bucks.
The notch is really disturbing. There is always an argument put that just turning the whole area dark hides it. But this also means that the statusbar no more changes colour with the apps, and i find that disturbing too. I just hope that the next generation completely renounces the notch
what is REALLY disturbing is that these phones don't have a bloody notification led anymore. Sure, you can do something useful for notifications with an Amoled screen but has OP actually thought of that? A coloured dot next to the notch or some small animation (e.g. a knight rider moving blip as a notification)
Iphones use camera flash, but its too distracting. Your idea of small dot on an amoled screen appears good. If possible why not add a notification number indicator or a few app icons
A couple of things I hope you touch upon you final review of this device:
1) More details on waterproofing since I already had to get my 5T repaired due to damage from just sitting on a kitchen island with some water on its surface while the 5T had the carbon fiber look case on it.
2) DRM Widevine capability level to allow high resolution playback. The 5T had to get this installed through an RMA process. I'm hoping this will be a nonissue this time.
3) the silent/vibrate textured rocker is extremely hard to operate with the above mentioned case. I'm hoping its easier on the 6
4) Camera improvements in real world situations.
5) AT&T VOLTE doesn't work on the 5T. Same deal with the 6? I believe TMobile has no issues.
I can almost understand a glass back to enable wireless charging, but this doesn't have wireless charging. So why glass? Mindless aping of Apple? To enable a new revenue stream for repairs? Yarbles.

So thanks mr. Cutress for this "hands-on". It's an interesting read but I'm afraid it's just that.
OnePlus seems to just want implement the latest "style" without thinking about whether that style adds any practical utility.
There is no reason to use a glass back which makes the phone more fragile if there is no wireless charging.
There is no reason to have a non-removable battery (except to promote planned obsolescence) if the phone is not water proof.
We have gotten to a point where most so-called "innovation" in cell phones is actually a step back in terms of practical utility.
Bezelless design means a very fragile phone with no bezel to protect the phone during drops. It means no front facing speakers. It means a notch in the screen, which means less area in the notification bar at the top. All it does is add more vertical pixels in 19:9 screens, which just drain the battery faster and add very little to the functionality of the phone, since it is the number of horizontal pixels that is critical for most applications.

OnePlus seems to just want implement the latest "style" without thinking about whether that style adds any practical utility.There is no reason to use a glass back which makes the phone more fragile if there is no wireless charging.
There is no reason to have a non-removable battery (except to promote planned obsolescence) if the phone is not water proof.
We have gotten to a point where most so-called "innovation" in cell phones is actually a step back in terms of practical utility.
Bezelless design means a very fragile phone with no bezel to protect the phone during drops. It means no front facing speakers. It means a notch in the screen, which means less area in the notification bar at the top. All it does is add more vertical pixels in 19:9 screens, which just drain the battery faster and add very little to the functionality of the phone, since it is the number of horizontal pixels that is critical for most applications.
