At this point why does Microsoft not fork android like Amazon does for their platforms and keep android compatibility. They have a store, their core programs are offered for Android but nobody is selling a Microsoft Services orientated phone , since they chickened out again.

"why does Microsoft not fork android like Amazon does?"
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Why?
Google just lost their Android appeal with Oracle and might now owe $BAZILLIONS$

I think Microsoft would rather use a Legitimate O.S. and then saddle it with illegal Spyware
and malware they call DRM with a License that is Null and Void!

The Courts will continue to go along with the Microsoft scam as long as they get a piece of the take

    Not so much with Android

Why would anybody want Microsoft Android? It isn't like they can "embrace, extend, and extinguish" in the mobile market.

Microsoft has released its Linux distro. Presumably used by anyone developing for Azure and wanting a "backup for the cloud".

Sadly, Android still doesn't play well with Outlook.com. Outlook app works fine but syncing contacts and calendar to Android's native contacts and calendar is broken. I'm presuming this is still because of Google dropping EAS support from Android for personal email (O365 should be working fine)... however, I've been using Hotmail/Outlook.com as my personal email for over a decade and it really works fine with all my other Windows tablets/laptops/desktops, so I'm not dropping it just because Google would rather I use Gmail.

Thus I'd rather MS gets closer to Apple, since it looks like it is iPhone for me, once I give up on my Lumia.
  • smilingcrow - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Moving from using my own domain for email to outlook.com email addresses is the biggest IT blunder I have made for ages or ever.
Their spam filter is terrible and you can't turn it off.
I hardly get any spam but get so many false positives with Outlook.com that I have to manually check all the spam folders weekly.
I made the change about 3 years ago before it was so clear how much MS have lost the plot as otherwise I wouldn't have trusted them.
Terrible company but my only other options for DAW usage is Apple which is a non starter.

    Outlook is great for me.
My main email, fire fighting email, work email, emergency services email... All neat and tidy and just works.

This keeps coming up. Let me ask you a couple of questions. Why are there so few successful forks of Android these days? What killed most of them off? Does Amazon's FireOS have Google Play? Why not?

Look up Google licensing for GMS. If you fork the OS you don't get crap for apps. Even FireOS falls well behind, and that's with all Amazon's muscle establishing a second storefront. Better yet they built that LONG before Google went iron fist and made things even harder. But again, it's still inferior.

The only thing that might enable a future competitor from MS is if PWAs are universally embraced. Then they won't have to convince devs to write apps that are capable of targeting Windows. They can just submit their PWAs. I would love to see that happen, WM10 was my favorite platform, but a lot of people needed access to "must have" apps and thus would not touch it.

Tabbed applications, how utterly fucking useless.

Want to do more shit on screen? Get a 4k monitor (or two). Then there's no need to waste time tabbing things together. This is just more crap that nobody asked for. like the retarded highlighting of buttons in calc.exe in 1803 update.
  • aktariel - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Disagree. Tabs aren't about "more stuff onscreen," they're about "logical groupings" and "easier context switching" and "saving for return to later without explicit archiving." Do you seriously do all of your web browsing in one or two windows with no tabs at all?
  • timecop1818 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Yes, I've disabled tabbing browsing for as long as it existed until the option to do so was removed from every major browser.

I use separate browser WINDOWS, because I can easily find the TITLE of the page I'm looking at by alt-tab or by the explorer window list. Good luck doing that with tabs. There's no need to group anything in tabs because it reduces usability and ability to come back to previously opened content by its name.

The problem with the use of tabbed applications is that they are a second-level GUI organisational tool (like menus) that the clueless UI designers are attempting to promote to a top-level GUI organisational feature - these are called windows :) Once UI designers get that users need multiple top-level objects (they don't *have* to be conventional windows) their GUIs might actually be worth using. Until then the mobile UIs will continue to be an embarassment when compared to their desktop counterparts

Feel you should be banned but I pity you. If you have all that money to buy 2 4K monitors, could you spare a couple of hundred dollars for me? I have still been using my PC for the last 7 years because I am a tech pro who knows what bang for buck is and understands the value of money and making do with what resources I have. Considering I use a 1080p display on a 14" laptop and a 15.6" laptop, I don't see how sets doesn't help me or countless others. Oh, how I wish I could use the last two words of your first sentence against you, but I feel you ain't worth me getting foul mouthed over. Anyways, good day "gentle"man.
  • timecop1818 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

That's funny, I'm typing this on a 13" laptop with 4K screen. Shitty 27" 4K monitors are < $250. Maybe you've made enough money in 7 years being a "tech pro" to afford a new 4K screen? Your eyes will thank you for it.
  • Ket_MANIAC - Tuesday, May 8, 2018 - link

Well, good luck using separate windows for every browser window. Cause OFC, tabs are useless. As for using 4K on smaller screens, well, to put it bluntly, unless you are a photography pro and edit and stuff like that, 16:9 4K on anything smaller than 15.6 inch is useless and more of a gimmick than actual use. Like I said, I believe more in real world applications and stuff that actually work than feel good stuff like "eyes will thank you". Quality of screen and a 3:2 display like the Surface Studio are more preferred than shitty 27" 4K screens. What's the point of buying anything shitty knowingly for so much money? Like I said, I feel you have more money than you can spend so maybe its easy for you.
  • timecop1818 - Tuesday, May 8, 2018 - link

    > Well, good luck using separate windows for every browser window.

I've managed so far up to now. infact, the only time i have a problem is when i accidentally open something in a tab (like clicking an external link) and forget about it, and then i have to start chrome task manager to locate the useless tab by name.

    > 16:9 4K on anything smaller than 15.6 inch is useless

it's perfectly fine for coding and getting more text on a screen while still keeping it readable. i couldn't give two fucks about photography.
  • Ket_MANIAC - Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - link

Look here buddy, clearly you are way over your head, using 4K screen to just code and then telling me that my eyes will thank me for it, thank for what, extra smooth curves of #include<stdio.h>?
Anyways, if it suits you, use it. Don't come here and foul mouth an article while recommending expensive products as well as their shitty 27" counterparts and calling everything else BS. If you like it, then do it in a civil way without using profanity in the first place. Now I will leave you alone because you are literally too stupid to have a discussion with.
  • ZeDestructor - Thursday, May 10, 2018 - link

    >thank for what, extra smooth curves of #include<stdio.h>?

Yes, actually. At very small font sizes, increases in pixel density have serious usability and comfort (less fatigue) benefits when you stare at it for 8-16 hours a day, every day.

Here's an example of a lowercase w on a 100ppi screen at 8pt (my default font size for terms and code): https://i.imgur.com/hYfPNb6.png . As you can see, there is very low contrast, and that makes it tiring to read.
  • Tams80 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Ah yea, the extra 4k monitors I can just throw in my bag and off I go.

Look, it clearly isn't for you, but for some people it is.

Why bother getting worked up and angry about something you don't care about?
  • timecop1818 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

So you can throw your 1080p monitors in your bag? I'm failing to see the point you're trying to make. If you're talking about laptops, I'm typing this on HP Spectre x360 13" with a 4K screen. There are literally hundreds of different brand/model laptops available with > 1080p screens. It's 2018 after all.
  • Ket_MANIAC - Tuesday, May 8, 2018 - link

Leave him alone, just because he can afford something he feels everyone needs to buy that thing and should use it while every other screen is useless. He is kid with either way too rich parents or too much money to be able to count. Its useless having a conversation with him.
  • Tams80 - Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - link

    Good for you?

I don't want or need a 4k display on my laptop though, especially a 13" display. I'd rather have the extra battery life and less strain on the computer. Those are just my needs though, and I don't expect you or anyone else to necessarily have the same.
  • mr_tawan - Tuesday, May 8, 2018 - link

You know, not everyone gets "BYOD" or something. I'm still using 2 19", 1280*720 at work. The screen space is very precious.

Also, I think the taskbar might not be very appreciated if everything is in its own window :-/.

PS. btw. I think it's more about *size* than *resolution*.

"This is something they tried to achieve with Windows Phone" You mean, what they started, then a month later dumped it on the Skype team, which ran it into the ground. Skype has released one horrible release after another. The -only- reason I use Skype is for this SMS from my PC ability. I hope to hell this new Your Phone feature is available for W10M users. UWP Messaging has had several updates recently and I just checked and it is showing my SMSs from my phone. Skype is currently the only way for me to reply to any(without digging out my phone)

I don't understand how microsoft could be attracting investors with a big pile of nothing.

Windows is losing more and more influence and customers. If it was not for DX, I really wonder how Windows would still be something.

Their office software is where they make their money.

IoT is going to be huge, however without any vision it is nothing more than words... and right now it is Microsoft words...
  • Ket_MANIAC - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

I don't know how it is losing influence and customers. Please give citations and proof before making such silly comments.
  • eva02langley - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Windows is not the only software running your device anymore (do I really need to draw the picture for you?). We are not in a world of desktop like it was in the 90s, people nowadays are going online on their android (or else) device.

Let me put it into the perspective of little me, little investor...

    1. Microsoft is developing apps for Windows
    2. Their Xbox division suffer
    3. Their phones are dead
    4. Their surface products are...
    5. Their stock is at its highest price ever...

A lot of people are going to have a rough awakening at some point. The only interesting aspect of Microsoft is their Office suites and their project software... however, even there, the competition is getting really hot in projects when it came to software.

I don`t see growth... you do? You seems to know to know everything. I could easily just mirror your question at you honestly, just to see if you can come up with anything at all...
  • deepblue08 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

    - Xbox division is doing just fine
    - Surface products don't have much market-share, but are consistently growing in popularity
    - Azure is the fastest growing cloud platform (2nd largest by marketshare)
    - Office 365 is doing very well
    - SQL Server was database of the year in 2016...

Do I need to go on?
  • baka_toroi - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Eva02langley, the thing you seem not to realize is that the overall market has grown. Even if MS loses in market share it's a bigger pie so they are still growing.

Xbox is non-existent in the rest of the world but the US is a big market.
  • mr_tawan - Tuesday, May 8, 2018 - link

Hmm in the personal computer space (laptop, desktop), Windows is still dominating the market. While OSX is growing, ... I don't see it comes very near at least in the foreseeable future.

In other spaces like server and mobile, yes they are losing. They are still strong in the server market though.

Did Microsoft turn down your job application?

Let me quote some recent year-on-year revenue growth numbers for Microsoft products....
Productivity and Business Processes up 14%
    Office Commercial up 12%
    365 commercial up 40%
    Office Consumer up 9%
    LinkedIn up 33%
    Dynamics up 14%
    Azure public cloud up 93%.
    Search up 14%
    Surface up 27%.
    Gaming up 16%.

You are right, what a worthless company, those idiot investors that have bid up its price to all-time highs should be paying you for your expert investing insights......
  • A5 - Monday, May 7, 2018 - link

Azure and O365 make them a ton of money. XBox is doing alright. PC makers still have to buy W10 licenses.

MSFT has been a big supporter of open source AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
funny because they seem to go out of their way to get rid of all of it that does not lead to $$$$$$$$$ rolling into their pocket or force redirection to their explorer, forcing updates for what they "deem" needs to be updated etc etc.

if they really were all about open source and giving customer what they want, we would be able to easily out of the box prevent forced downloads indefinitely, we would have a choice of what internet browser we want without facing a potential background redirect, we could choose the GUI that win10 uses by default (like the tried and true good ol Win 7 actual start/control panel screen) etc etc.

As far as tabbed application for browser, might make sense in "some" things, but for everything else is utter stupidity, have enough BS dealing with my phone doing this
(where it wants to have a many tabs in explorer and background process running as often as possible for nothing chewing through memory and battery life)

to each their own, IMO internet browser "tabs" vs actual software/hardware applications are best to continue to be what they are versus trying to cram them all together because knowing MSFT they will release another update that will butcher the design a few months down the road and all the many hours/days trying to get everything just right on your end will end up being wasted for nothing because almighty MSFT will decide "it was not worth it"

granted for business folks, having a "control set" of many applications launched/arranged with all of a single click, this can be a very powerful concept as many call centers among industries do this exact thing, it saves time once you have it all sorted out, but it would really really suck if one of those "apps" is deemed by MSFT to be out of date and try to force an update or prevent the program you NEED from being used and destroying your house of cards.

I think MSFT should really just try to focus on making a great OS and let others make the great apps, seems the more they try to be something they are not, the more it gets all cruddy and the more gets removed from working properly because they are chasing unicorns instead of keeping what they already had done well in the past continue to be as good as they were able to make it.

Something along the line of a "start is back" occupying 1/3 to 1/2 of the screen for nothing breaks any confidence I have with what they claim they will be able to do, not to mention removing many apps that were free and instead upselling the MSFT "paid" versions which often are at best "similar" often enough worse than what was widely available "open source" free programs/apps.

Make the OS, lets others make the software/hardware/apps/games etc, cannot expect everyone's cookies to be your as well your greedy mofos ^.^
