It was the one side of the device I didn't photograph, yet in our pre-brief presentation, they said 3.5mm jack as a key feature. Andrei is at the announcement, I'll get a confirm.
OK, that one is on me - Andrei checked and confirms they do not. I specifically have written in my notes from the briefing that they said they have 3.5mm jacks. Something isn't right.
"Using the Notch allows the handset to maximise the front-facing screen size compared to the size of the phone..."
No mention at all of the new Mi MIX you just posted about, which does pretty well for itself without a notch (though it has a little extra chin at the bottom) : https://www.anandtech.com/show/12575/xiaomi-announ...
With a Notch, there's ultimately little compromise to standard smartphone implementations. The Mi MIX has compromise, with the front-facing camera located to the bottom and additional elements internally for speakers.
"Little compromise" is an understatement. A quick look at Apple's design guideline tells you that it is more than just a little cutout from pictures/videos. (which are distracting in and of themselves)
And the appearance and the operation of notification area on the iPhone X are rather significant compromises from UI standpoint. (wasted vertical space, inability to scale fonts, flat-out loss of useful indicators) I do believe notifications, time/date, battery indicator, signal indicator, etc. are part of a standard smartphone implementation.
You keep repeating the BS about the notch but no, the notch is better than a bezel but much worse than no notch at all. This garbage has both a notch and a giant lower bezel. Huawei has been going downhill since 2016, last year home button mania, now the notch. They got to stop being as incompetent as the worst in the industry and start thinking.
The lower bezel will be large without an effort, small with LCD and chip on film for the display driver, or none really with OLED and chip on plastic. The notch, they don't need at all. Apple needs the notch because they are insane and they went with facial recognition, something that is far less practical than fingerprint. They create numerous problems while not solving anything, their solution only offers disadvantages. Aside from the fact in some cultures people cover their faces on a regular basis and what they are doing is arrogant and intolerant. But Apple is Apple, they do really dumb things and stick with them for at leaat 5 years. The problems arise when others insist on copying those mistakes and it's even worse when the press can't think either and supports those decisions./
Anyone who doesn't want or can't use Face ID can just get an 8 or 8 Plus. It's basically the same except the viewing angles are better with LCD vs OLED. They use the same SoC. There's no arrogance or intolerance except in your imagination.
Yet they've just shown that they are the only ones with any guts to move smartphone cameras forward. It's not been since Nokia that that that has happened.
@chrnochime What does this have to do with politic? Before you open your pipe hole, you should take a look at things you own (we all know ~99% of them are made in China).
Buying a Chinese phone != supporting Chinese political ideologies. Also fyi China hasn't really been much of a communist country in the past decade; it's much more of an authoritarian one at this point
Not at all, since the OLED screen is able to turn the pixels at the notification bar portion completely off, so in fact it's even less likely to burn in as compared to a standard white notif bar
Huawei's marketing is very confusing. Is this the new flagship? The P20 is slightly cheaper than the Mate 10, but the P20 Pro is more expensive than the Mate 10 Pro.
The article says the P series is "the brand Huawei promotes as the more mainstream counterpart to the Mate series of smartphones." Mainstream, to me, means more accessible to average consumers (a.k.a, cheaper), which this thing doesn't seem to be. It just seems like this naming scheme would lead to needless brand confusion.
What's that phone with the caption "What's in a Notch?" The speaker placement is horribly off-center, and the camera on the right looks a bit off-center, too, but not as bad.
I'm assuming it's not the P20, because the other pictures of it have that as being black, not gold.
On the P20 pro, at least, turning the notch off makes it seem like the notification icons are floating on a thin bezel (since the OLED screen has true blacks) so it certainly isn't as bad as it seems.
Huawei is knocking out of park with their nice Chinese trademark advantage of ripping up things. Pixelfusion ? I can remember Nokia Pureview. The camera design and the phone entirely is inspired of Apple.
This and Mix2S are blatantly copying Apple. Pro notch from Ian is shocking as well. This phone doesn't have that sophisticated FaceID tech nor the bottom chin being absent yet has a notch up top just to create the hype of iClone. Samsung has more features (3.5mm jack is worth itself apart from others) and works better, looks original.
I wish Apple removes this year and see all these junk phones fall flat.
You know when Nokia announced that they were getting out of the consumer phone business? Technology companies flocked to Espoo and booked out hotel rooms for weeks in order to get Nokia engineers. Huawei was one of those companies.
A simple search would have informed you that there are several ex-Nokia engineers (imaging ones specifically) who now work for Huawei.
Huawei may well pay Nokia for using Nokia patents for pixel-binning and other patents. Obviously they won't want to pay for pixel-binning and digital 'zooming' (literally just cropping) branding when they can just make their own brand names.
GNSS? Noone is reporting from Paris whether or not P20 Pro has Galileo (earlier leaks differ). Almost all 2018 flagships from the major companies are leaked to have Qualcomm/ Snapdragon and therefore unlikely to have the much ballihooed Broadcom (Qualcomm competitor) dual frequency chip that would give smartphones <1m location accuracy. The Exynos models of the Samsung S9's have the chip (but no signs yet that it is functional). Any hope from Huawei??
I don't hate the notch but it's a jumping the shark moment for flagship handsets. To use it as a differentiator is advancement for the sake of advancement.
I am fine with the notch. But I would like more bezel on the sides. I have an Honor 9 and it's too easy to send spurious inputs from holding the phone in certain situations. Just a little bit more bezel would solve the issue. I could live with a screen a couple millimeters smaller. The other complaint I have with the ergonomics of the phone is that the lock button for the screen is too close to the center of balance for the phone, and so it's easy to accidentally hit it when handling the phone under certain conditions. If they don't have room for both the volume and the lock button on the same side then they should move the lock button to the other side.
Whoa. Those tree limbs in the second shot look like they are going super Saiyan w/the 40mp. How are they managing to run 92mp worth of sensors? I mean, you (probably) can't use them all at once like some of the other flagships but the back alone has 68mp! Regarding their dedicated npu, can we expect an update to last year's benchmarking of the various soc offerings?
With today's processors? Quite easily. At most three will be running at a time, but probably only two.
The Nokia 808 needed a separate DSP (which did make it's camera very snappy) and the Lumia 1020 was sloooooow. However, that was about 5-6 years ago, and mobile SoCs have become a lot more powerful since then.
TBC, I'm not saying that a picture can't be taken but that the experience would be pretty comprised (in terms of things like multi frame HDR and burst mode) relative to iPhones, pixels, galaxys, etc. The best mobile isps seem to top out around 1.2GP/s with support for up to, about, 48MP, and at that point, is be willing to bet the experience would already be sub-optimal.
Multi-frame HDR should be fine (just), but yeah, burst mode likely won't be able to sue the 40MP camera and the monochrome one. I don't they'll have both be used in burst mode though, for that reason. Multi-frame HDR may also only use one monochrome image (if you are using the monochrome sensor to supplement the 40MP or telephoto one).
As you say, there are arrangements that should work byt, from the looks of the pics, they aren't making the most of their sensors (and, since Zeiss has their name on things, the lenses should be fine).
All this complaining about the notch, but not about the lack of a headphone jack?! The notch can be easily 'hidden' and on the P20 screen burn-in wouldn't even be an issue (although it won't blend in as well). On the P20 Pro, it likely will be an issue, but it's a tiny area that will likely show the exact same stuff every day.
What I would like to know is how the microphones are. I doubt they are as good as the ones Nokia were using (and HTC at one point...), which if it is the case would be shame.
Re: the notch. It is an aspect of design 'invented' because the designers did not have the wit to create a truly clean full-display front. Instead of a true innovation, the market will begin a phase of ever smaller notches (or worse, notch shapes) until one day someone who actually does have talent will design a notchless phone. I am reminded of this lyric from The Jam's Going Underground, "And the public wants what the public gets". It is sad that so many consumers in today's societies possess an inability to think for themselves. Perhaps that is the definition of a consumer.
I rarely if ever take a selfie or otherwise use the front camera. I could do without it. How about ditch the front camera and the notch, 100% front display coverage.
No need for a notch if you want mostly screen up front, just look at the original Mi Mix. The Mix 2S does away with the original's complicated under-screen ear speaker by putting a tiny top bezel on top with a conventional speaker. As for the front camera, turning the phone upside down isn't much of an issue.
So why do all these Android vendors copy Apple's halfbaked solution in the first place? If Xiaomi, a company that's frequently called a copycat, can come up with a totally original design then the others should too.
Those night mode shots (multi-frame NR actually, just with more frames than previous implementations) smear like hell, it's like a Prisma filter! With somewhat more resolution. And all the 10MP shots are oversharpened(yet still with less detail than the S9 shots), and they say Samsung does too much sharpening. Even the 40MP shots have arguably less detail than the S9 shots, and with incredible(alright not as incredible as the multi-frame NR) smearing even in broad daylight, which I thought was only possible with a puny front camera!
I'm indifferent and don't care whether my next phone have a notch or not. I'm flexible, it's a relatively minor consideration and there are other things that are more important to me.
In any case my current phone is only 2yrs old and performs well, it'll last several years more.
I have a very specific list of features that I want in a smartphone: 1. Removable battery (I detest throwing away my phone after 500 recharge cycles!) 2. Easily removable SD Card and SIM card (notice the word *easily*. I want to be able to open the case and pop out the cards without having to use any special tools) 3. Decent camera. 4. 5.5 inch screen or above 5. Decent processor 6. Decent speakers 7. 2GB or more of RAM
I don't need water proofing, bezel-less design, fingerprint sensors, sensors under glass, face recognition, notches in my screen, 18:9 screens, 400+ppi or any of the other BS that cell phones manufacturers are now hyping, but I can live with those features as long as the phone has the essential features. However, there is not a single new phone on the market that answers my needs. Gee, the wonder of the free market, that produces thousands of models of phones that we don't want. I blogged about this last year and the situation has only gotten worse: https://amosbbatto.wordpress.com/2017/10/24/free-m...

I'm indifferent and don't care whether my next phone have a notch or not. I'm flexible, it's a relatively minor consideration and there are other things that are more important to me.In any case my current phone is only 2yrs old and performs well, it'll last several years more.

I have a very specific list of features that I want in a smartphone:1. Removable battery
(I detest throwing away my phone after 500 recharge cycles!)
2. Easily removable SD Card and SIM card
(notice the word *easily*. I want to be able to open the case and pop out the cards without having to use any special tools)
3. Decent camera.
4. 5.5 inch screen or above
5. Decent processor
6. Decent speakers
7. 2GB or more of RAM
I blogged about this last year and the situation has only gotten worse:
