I'm sure it's great for cosmetic stuff, but what I've quickly determined about Threadripper and water cooling is that cooling isn't the issue, power delivery to the chip is. At least on my MSI board, the 1950X caps out at 272 amps. That puts OC levels in around the 4.1-4.125 range under the current process. Any higher then that and you get throttling in certain workloads (like prime95 under 'hot' settings) For 4.1 and below, the Enermax AIOs do great. At 4.1 GHz with my fans replaced by some noctuas, my max temp under prime95 hits around 65.6C.. Outside of that, the fans are off most of the time except when I do demanding stuff like video encodes or compiling.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to build a custom loop for extreme overclocking, but you aren't going to get that with Threadripper.
Thats pretty ancedotal to make an assumption for all TR CPU's based on 1 CPU and one MB. What voltage are you running and how does yours compare to the average? Does you setup cool the power delivery like these blocks are supposed to?
Fair enough. He said its his power delivery. Doesnt mention his voltage or whether or not he is cooling it like these blocks wood. Ive seen several going up to 4.3. Chip lottery has its play in that but none of the articles ive read have talked about actively cooling the power delivery. I'd like to see what would happen. eek2121, you need to buy this and test it. Anand, sponsor him with a water block so we can see if there's a diff!
That’s what I was thinking too. The threadripper has a pretty low tdp and a lot of surface area. The problem appears to be limitations of the socket to provide enough power.
I'll never forget the acrylic block that leaked a big pile of coolant onto my brand new nVidia 580 while it was running. Surprisingly the graphics card was fine but that certainly ruined my day.
I know people get really excited about watercooling, but for those on a budget, Noctua's U14S air cooler is cheap, quiet, and highly effective for cooling Threadripper. It's under $80 -- versus $140 just for this block and none of the rest of the watercooling setup. Heck, they even include some high quality thermal paste in the box.
There are only two limitations with this air-cooling option: 1) You can't go insane with the voltage for overclocking (though its cooling rivals or beats some of the earlier less-optimized water cooling setups for Threadripper). 2) You need a case that is large enough to house a fairly tall tower air cooler.
I guess the other "limitation" is that it comes with a boring-looking brown fan? Which nobody will ever see if you are like me and prefer closed side panels with sound-deadening material (as opposed to glass windows and glowing LEDs). Oh, and you'll miss the thrill of wondering if a water leak will ever fry anything in your system.
I miss their older design motifs; either the solid black or there blocks with circular elements on them (they rarely ever do this now). I mean, this isn't ugly and currently the trend people want. But I still miss the more subdued, industrial look.
