Having been in their less restrictive Fab 9, I can tell you visiting fabs is cool unless you actually need to visit for work, in which you'll be hating everyone (especially the applied materials process machines shown there)
Thanks. You can easily find the info was a bit harder for me. I have never worked in semiconductors but have been in quite a few data centers so had no real background what I was looking for.
"bunny suits, delineated that way due to possible electromigration issues."
Not electromigration. Contamination. Copper is a silicon contaminant. Copper atoms are highly mobile within silicon and will ultimately be attracted up into the channels of transistors and ruin them. The use of copper for interconnect is to combat electromigration but the copper must be completely encased such that it never comes in contact with any of the underlying silicon.
Really neat to see this, it's where all the desktop Ryzen chips are made so I have a chip from this fab. Fab 8 and 10 are the only GF locations currently producing 14nm and they're both in New York. Packaging occurs in either Malaysia or China though, for Ryzen chips at least. I've gotten one of each between my original purchase and RMA.
this Fab, writ large, creates a conundrum: if the Stuff we make involves no labor, how can that subsist? 1 - no humans have any money to buy stuff 2 - such mass production only works if the number of units is infinitely large to disperse the capital cost. any ideas? do we all have to become real estate moguls?
Capital begets more capital, as Thomas Piketty pointed out. The wealthy get wealthier from returns on capital while workers - 99% of us - get less and less for our efforts. Some day the consumer economy will hit a brick wall when consumers can no longer consume at the rate required by capital. Who will buy these chips then?

And also, it can be a glow in the dark suit, because you never know when the power might go out :pboeush - Thursday, February 8, 2018 - link
I won't be impressed until bunny suits actually start incorporating bunny ears. And ample cleavage... :Pmr_tawan - Sunday, February 11, 2018 - link
He would have to dance the same way as seen on very old Intel ad :)MajGenRelativity - Thursday, February 8, 2018 - link
I envy your ability to see inside a fab! It sounds like an awesome timebasroil - Thursday, February 8, 2018 - link

Thanks nice article. Would loved to have seen some photos of the automated machines. They almost sound like automated overhead mine cars.jjj - Thursday, February 8, 2018 - link
You can easily find info on those pods as it's the standard way of doing things. Here's an example https://www.entegris.com/shop/en/USD/Products/Wafe...

Depending on the definition of "cutting edge", there are two more foundries: UMC and SMIC.Thunder 57 - Saturday, February 10, 2018 - link
Anyone else find it odd they include 20nm in that photo? AFAIK they never did produce 20nm.FunBunny2 - Saturday, February 10, 2018 - link
