The guys at Cherry mentioned to me at CES the target market for these is laptops. They probably wont initially end up in desktop keyboards.
They also had a great demo block comparing the low profile to the standard in Black, Brown, Red, etc...
The craziest switch was the speed silver. It is so sensitive that you can tip just the corner of the key cap 0.1mm and it will trigger an actuation. So you don't even need to press the keys, you can "finger float."
I imagine some desktop keyboards that have laptop profile keys may end up getting these eventually, but I agree that they probably won't be there initially. I don't really favor keyboards with that profile, but I know plenty of people that do. I may give it another shot once low profile mechanical switches have been out for a while.
I would greatly prefer an ultrashort actuation keyboard. Right now I used my laptop's keyboard. I've looked at some options including speed silver, logitec g switchs, some razer crap (i refuse to buy any new razer stuff though). The only thing I really prefer about desktop keyboards is that they have elevation tiers so it is more practical and you can still have the tops of the keys flat. I've been looking for a decent speed silver keyboard without the num pad for a while but there aren't many speed silver keyboards out yet. Maybe one day I will find a tenkeyless, speed silver, led lit keyboard that isnt $250 fucking dollars.
Absolutely would buy a TKL keyboard with low profile cherry red switches. The main reason why I still use a membrane TKL keyboard (other than they are quiet) is I don't like the long uncomfortable throws of mechanical switches. Went back to the ThinkPad Compact TKL keyboard and love it. Low profile red switches would bring me back to mechanical.
