I'd like to see Netgear providing some competition with Ubiquiti's "wired only" products for home use. Such as an 8-port home router, without WiFi. They have dropped support for the Netgear FVS318G, and Ubiquiti's 8-port ER-8 "wired only" router (designed for business use) is priced at ~$300. D-Link's similar product failed to work at all for me. A home use "wired only" 8-port router with a fully updated and secure firmware is what's needed.
Not directly related to NTGR, but, I was in your boat not too long back. Always thought I needed a 8-port router, and was even using the WD My Net N900 HD with the Wi-Fi disabled for a long time (the Wi-Fi was buggy is another story). Then, I evaluated my network topology - turned out that a UniFi USG (@ $119) and a couple of UniFi Switch 8 (@ $99 each) could achieve the same. I eventually ended up with the USG-Pro-4 and multiple UniFi Switches (some with PoE for hooking up the access points). So, sometimes, evaluating the network requirements afresh *might* help.
To be honest it's easiest to just get a Mini PC and use it as a router. Companies like Qotom have 4 1Gbit port devices that use Intel NICs and Atom/Celeron/i3 processors with AES-NI. Throw pfSense on there and you have an open source firmware router that has all the features you could want, running on a device smaller than most routers and that has enough power to handle 300+Mbps through a VPN, which no router under $300 can handle. And you don't have to worry about bricking your router trying to get DD-WRT/Tomato/LEDE/AsusWRT/OpenWRT/etc. on your router just to get some useful functionality out of it. And it will only cost you $200.
If you don't need such a strong CPU to handle the VPN encrypt/decrypt then you can get a $100 Mini PC that uses a CPU that doesn't have AES-NI, and put pfSense on it, and you still get a fully managed 4 port router for cheaper than anything Netgear, Ubiquiti, or D-Link will ever offer.
