they keep changing the names of the software like it actually matters to anyone ... guess what
  • frothar - Thursday, November 30, 2017 - link

it does matter. it allows you to differentiate better which driver you are using.

Because numbering it with a date stamp is so confusing?

Why not both? Lots of game companies have named updates as well. The PC world has become cynical as hell about everything.

right!!! . numbers are so hard to figure out. someone said 'both' the numbers for adults and long 'creative' naming games for the adolescents to brag about. Or, maybe not.

It matters a lot! When you keep burning customers you need to constantly change your branding to let them know that 'this one will be different' lol

I think it's cute, it's almost like someone at AMD has been trying their hand at this new fangled invention called Marketing. One day, we might even see AMD advertise!!!

It would be nice if the 2017 driver launched in January 2017 instead of December 2017. The name doesn't matter that much (the 17.12.# matters), the quality of the drivers and any new/removed features do matter.

  • extide - Thursday, November 30, 2017 - link

    Yeah, its Year.Month.Rev

Po-tay-to po-tah-to? Equally valid positive spin: You get the best driver set a month before you would if they released it in the new year!

By the looks of the video, it seems to be some super upgrade for RX Vega drivers. Why else would they show a tear down of the card and then pump it up with some red lasers and have the logo pulsing.
  • DanGer1 - Friday, December 1, 2017 - link

Agreed. They usually get a good boost from this major driver updates and with Vega being new it has more upside. I always got the sense form Raja that they were behind on software maybe this gets them up to speed. Vega has a lot of raw power, hopefully this harnesses it.

The actual driver design, not just the UI, may have changed. There are usually two sides, the UI/controls, and then you have the fundamental driver design. It is possible that these new drivers will be a significant change to the driver design, and it could even lead to improvements in the RX 400 and 500 series card performance. Or, it may be nothing but branding/cosmetics. We shall find out soon.

I'm really hoping this enables the DSBR. It could still help AMD's holiday sales numbers, a bit.
