Not necessarily, the glass is mostly edge to edge, but the display itself isn't. Only recently it started showing up on phones like S8+, Essential Phone etc.
Depends on which edge you are measuring from. Pretty much every display is edge-of-display to edge-of-display, by definition. And none whatsoever are edge-of-device to edge-of-device, though some have some pretty thin bezels.
2436x1125 falls short of my 2015 2560x1440 phone. Wireless charging? I had that in 2012.
And likely no Headphone jack either.
And worst of all... They have used shitty glass on the front and back, one drop and it will look like crap. This phone doesn't excite me in my pantaloons.
If screen is PenTile, going above 1080p does make some sense. At 1080p, there's still slight fuzziness to be observed in straight lines. Photos do look perfectly fine, though. To my eyes.
In-case you aren't aware, not all phones have the same sized screen, in-fact we are now pushing towards 6.5" devices.
And the human eye can exceed 20/20 vision.
*****
The fact is... This is a high-end "FLAGSHIP" there is no excuse for any cutbacks, it's called a flagship for a reason. - All Apple is doing is incorporating features that have been standard in other devices for years and selling it as something new.
I disagree they don't sell as new they sell as done right. If being first means poor performance or the phone might blow up in your pocket whats the point. How many billions has being first cost Samsung with their phone / IED.
Probably useless if you got a phone with crappy SOC and a tiny battery. Double the amount of battery mAh would add about 1mm of the phone thickness. But Apple cons always look forward for your purchase of a new iPhone again next year.
A new iPhone might be faster than a new Android phone even tho its hardware is weaker because iOS "talk" directly to the hardware, unlike Android system. But here's the catch - Apple has ALWAYS released new updates to slow their devices down. Guess why?
1) It's ridiculous to obsess over pixel size for a device that gets covered in fingerprints.
2) It's ridiculous to obsess over color quality in a device that gets covered in fingerprints. Color quality is a bit more relevant, if someone takes the time to clean the screen.
3) Smaller pixels have a shorter lifespan in OLED displays. Is that what you want?
4) Smaller pixels have lower brightness, unless you want to reduce lifespan further.
5) Smaller pixels require more memory and more processing power.
6) 20/20 vision isn't the point. The point is the distance between you and the phone when you're using it. The distance is what matters, along with the fingerprints.
7) There is a difference between a flagship product shipping with the best possible useful technology and shipping with silly overkill just to please e-peen seekers.
It's about what Apple is lacking. I have an iPhone 6S and a ZTE Axon 7 mini which cost me $700 and $200, respectively. Guess which display is better for reading and more pleasant to look at?
I wasn't that impressed either. It is nice phone, but asking price is quite rude, imho.
I like what they have done with top and bottom of the phone - but sides do have noticeable border around the screen.
My 2 years old Lumia 950 XL has OLED, and higher resolution screen.
Also wireless charging and face recognition. I'm expecting Apple's tech to be faster and more reliable, but really that micro Kinetic built into my Lumia picks my face - with glasses - fairly well. It is over 2 years old tech, after all.
I don't get 256GB storage (iPhone X with 256GB is NZ$2100, btw...)... but Lumia will happily swallow 200GB micro-SD on top of built in 32GB.
No dual lens on Lumia, but I'm still quite impressed with 20MP shooter they have put in, good flash, lens, big sensor... for a phone.
I'm well aware that iPhone X will Quicksilver circles around my Lumia speed-wise, and then there's also proper ecosystem around iOS - something that Windows Mobile has failed to achieve, for most part. Not to mention that is is all but dead platform ;) But... even SnapDragon 810 is still more than fast enough for my needs, core apps are actually very nice, and phone was around 25% of iPhone X price, when I got it early this year. Probably even less today, if one can be found.
Just my personal observations. I'm not saying they hold universal truth, this is my mileage. I like burning money, only I'd rather burn those NZ$2K on full frame DSLR body, for example. Quite a few other things before I'd spend them on this phone.
There is more to screen quality than pixel count. In fact, OLED screens can be worse with a higher pixel count when it comes to lifespan and brightness. Then, there's the issue of color — gamut and accuracy.
Of course Apple's stuff is overpriced, though. One perk that comes with that price tag is better phone support.
I'm looking forward to the Anandtech reviews. Between this, the S8/Note8, LG V30, and the Pixel 2, it's going to be an interesting year for smartphone flagships.
When you compare with Android devices, things really start to get interesting. For example, Samsung’s own Exynos 8895, which is inside some versions of the Galaxy S8, tops the list at just over 1900 on the single-core score. Following that, we have the Kirin 960 from Huawei, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which post scores of around 1880 and 1800 respectively.
Why they went for multicore this time... 6 core together that's nice, but don't think the APC will do that often. The ratio is probably to adapt to many small tasks plus some big ones. Have to say it leaves an impression that's faster CPU than A10X both single and multi which is just, ahh i would bet X SoC won't be broken by phones this year.
They were already multicore. The A10 is a 4 core chip. And in a sense, they are still sticking with their "our phones should have 2 very powerful cores" philosophy- there still isn't anything else that's going to touch the two front cores for raw performance.
Difference being A10 had a hardware switcher that only allowed two active cores at once, while A11 allows all six at once if there is load there, more like recent big.little.
The per core performance gain is there, but Monsoon isn't too much above the Hurricane cores in the A10X in this case. I wonder if they're going to hit that Intel single core performance wall.
I'm more interested for the score of single core hi-eff processor (clock speed, usage, etc) compared to the competitors like SD625. They actually increases from 2 little cores to 4 hi eff cores.
This is significant increase in performance - but to be honest I not sure how much I trust Geekbench. especially if you look at top single core results with Lenovo ZUK Z2. Sounds to me like a hacker cheating with results.
I wish someone would do in depth analysis of reliability of GeekBench especially when comparing #'s between ARM and x86 processors - I not sure that GeekBench results can actually be trusted when on different chips - I not sure even only x86 chips - they then to favor newer chips and not just because of newer technology. Just my personal view.
Odd that the Pixel 2 seems the least exciting and relevant phone this year by all the leaks, which have proven right so far. If you asked people a year ago about anticipated phones it'd probably have topped the list. Now? Eh.
apple said the reason they didn't use OLED before is because the previous OLED screens weren't "good enough" for iphone.
nah not really. You just didn't have the suppliers, and you still don't. You now rely on samsung for every iPhone X sold. Apple can't finish that Display factory fast enough.
I'm curious about this. They are claiming better screen specs than any other smartphone. Either this is not true, or Samsung let Apple be the first to market with the better tech in their phone. Either surprises me.
No, Apple is outright lying in some of their points for "Traditional OLED," unless by 'traditional' they meant from 2012. Like, OLEDs have had a very large gamut for a long time, and most of them nowadays are very well calibrated (at least in non-default modes that mute the extreme colors). They also have bright whites in the devices from the last couple years. In essence, a lot of that is software-based instead of being a limitation on OLED hardware, and it's dishonest for Apple to imply otherwise.
I do wonder if it wasn't so much a matter of the accuracy being attainable but the process. Apple do seem to overdevelop certain areas where other companies make do with what's adequate (the touch accuracy on the original iPhones Vs the other touch screen phones at the time is a great example - iPhone was nearly perfect where as the others couldn't draw a straight line) and so in order to meet their standards the effort required to calibrate OLED may have been just too much and too expensive. It's possible that this has become quicker and cheaper and as a result economically viable.
I still wouldn't have one. Pretty happy with my S8 with all its Bixby nonsense shut off.
I also can not wait for someone to glue a passport phone on to an egg and fool the new security system.
Well Apple had to out do the iPhone 7’s Display which was the most color accurate display in any phone. Switching from the 7’s LCD to OLED and maintaining higher color accuracy at the same time is no small feat.
Wow way to milk every cent from us. Ive been using iphone since 4 but it looks like the s8 is more attractive as the price falls. 64gb is too little, so that defaults me to 256gb for friggin another $150.
Its a pretty nice phone, but I find it funny that all of the improvements are just catching up to what was available on other platforms already. In some cases many years ago... And while its a great effort by Apple finally catching up, the payoff for the customers is a $1000 phone? Confused.
I know, and I get that. Usually Apple comes out with something years later than everyone else and changes the normal price of a high end phone for the "catch up" product. Now they have broken the ceiling for high priced phones with the latest "catch up" product.
starting at 999?? no thanks.. and yet.. there will still be people lined up the day of release to buy this.. i hope the phone carriers.. no longer allows the customer to pay per month to pay for it, but instead.. makes the customer buy the phone outright...
IMO.. apple products.. are more of a status symbol now.. then anything..
You are silly. Apple products are in no way a status symbol anymore...especially iPhones. Maybe in 2008-2011 iphones, but now everyone can get one if they want it.
It's quote the opposite now. Apple iPhones are SO common, that it's actually a status symbol NOT TO HAVE ONE. People with the Galaxy Note's and such are the stand-outs. Those are figuratively rare compared to an iPhone.
lurker12....sorry but most people i know.. cant afford apple products... those that can.. sure show them off and brag about how much they paid for it.. so yes. apple products ARE nothing more then status symbols...
samus, maybe where you are.. but here... not so much... i know of only a hand full of people that have an iphone.. most say they have become too expensive, and have switched to samung, google, HTC, and others...
Guys I've had iPhones since Iphone 3gs. Its not about status symbol. Its about quality, convenience and minimalism. An iPhone is so great because its not a distraction, never. It will never stand in between you and your business. My ipod 4g still can play nfs most wanted just for fun. Quality and reliablity are the keys.
The thing that frustrates me the most is not the $1000 price tag... but that for $1000 you only get 64 GB. If you are going to pay above top-of-the line price, you should at least get top-of-the line specs.
Releasing the X now for $1000 in 256 GB only, then a 64 GB version for less later might have been a move I could support. But no way in hell $1000 should buy you only 64 GB in 2017.
Hey! It is a Apple flagship! What to Expect. The smallest model is the "cheap" and by using some more money you get bigger storage. This will sell like hot cakes!
Everyone keeps harping on the iPhone X like it's just another OLED phone, but it's got some fascinating technology embedded within.
It's got a bloody miniaturized Xbox Kinect built into the top sensing bar to enable FaceID, and can do depth sensing on both the front and rear cameras.
It’s not confusing at all. Another Android manufacturer and customer proud to claim “first” and then deliver crap fingerprint sensors, GPUs, digital wallets, facial scanning—and then claim that Apple’s much better implementation is late to the game.
Spin? Don't know what y'all expect them to say (or what they could've said that wouldn't get y'all in a tither).
It's a HDR DCI-P3 gamut implementation they call Super Retina.
Lord knows what that'll mean.
Apple and others were using the same IPS LCD display (and still do on the 8s), but Apple managed to individually calibrate each display to better the standard white point and wider color gamut, so who knows what tricks they employed with this one.
"a user can choose one of twelve animal emoji (fox, cat, dog, pig, unicorn, poop emoji) and record a ten second message where the ‘ani-moji’ will mimic in real-time how the user is moving and speaking in order to send to the other person."
If this turns out to be really cute and fun, apple has just solidified its market share of woman ages 0-100 for this phone(any many men to a lower degree). I say this still confused by how many people are crazy about snapchat faces and all that other crap. A lot of people do not care about the "tech specs".
When they talked so vaguely about "cores" in the GPU, it made me think of modules (because there are only "3" cores) and we can't escape the correlation to AMD APU's and GPU's when talking about modules. I wonder if they have adopted an entirely different GPU architecture in order to improve machine learning and FP performance.
TBDR is not a new concept ... the original QuickDraw model journaled QD calls and played them back front to back, and would only draw the visible parts of background QD primitives.
Ever since MacOS X, the new primitives are postscript atoms, and the journaled result is called PDF (which is why PDFs rendering is so unreasonably fast on Macs and iOS devices).
So nothing less than an anniversary could force apple to release a phone that is at par with competitors in display and battery technology. Well not bad, but they should not have been with miserly with physical buttons.
I'm pretty sure there's nothing special anywhere about 'battery technology'. It's one of those fields that are slowly plodding along, such that everyone is using similar tech. If anything, they're finally giving up on making thinner devices so that they can fit more battery inside, and that's not definitively better. Some people prefer it one way, and some the other.
Wouldn't be too sure about that ... Apple's been playing with "terraced" batteries which allow them to play with capacity and match the batteries to their physical enclosure.
Curious how good they are. When they added them to the 7 I assumed both speakers were even, but 80% of the sound and all of the bass still comes out the bottom speaker. Blocking the top speaker loses you almost nothing.
IF that thing can reach same brightness as the iPhone 7 (they say so) at full screen white, then color me impressed - that's amazing perf from an oled panel. Apple watch series 2 already does that, but it's bit smaller screen than the iPhone X (on a log log scale) and Apple actually markets it as 1000 nits while white is at ~ 600 if I remeber.
Just woried that it's gonna consume like 2W of power at that brightness, just to light up the screen.
Brightness is not a problem for modern OLED. In fact, I find my S7 screen to be too bright, especially when the "full sun" mode kicks in when outside. I usually find the auto-brightness to work well, except when outside. It gets too bright and washes all the colours out, requiring turning off auto-brightness and actually lowering the screen brightness.
In full dark, even at the lowest brightness setting, it's still too bright. You can definitely use a blank tab in Chrome as a flashlight without going above 50% brightness; although the phone will get hot if you do that for too long.
I think the iPhone X will be limited to about 625 nits, whereas Samsung's flagships can go up to 1000.
We're all used to all the cool kids having OLED panels, but iPhone sales quantities put all other handsets to shame.
iPhones are the highest selling flagship line, and while Samsung sells a zillion more phones than Apple, most of them are phones that took over the feature phone price-point.
You don't have WiFi or something? 802.11ac and the iPhone's fast internal storage should make transferring files pretty easy. Get Transmit and have it sftp files over if you want.
Another "innovative" edge to edge display from Apple, not copied from anyone. Oh! Xiaomi Mi Mix actually looks better than this piece. And the aluminum casing with antenna lines design starting from iPhone 6 look like Meizu's which released before the iPhone 6. But "slide to unlock" and "tap on status bar to scroll up top" are exclusively for iPhone.
The US patent system is messed up. It only benefits cons.
What's most ridiculous about Apple's stance on patents is that the hardware and technology patents that make its success possible are subject to FRAND licencing, while its trivial design patents aren't.
If design patents are so trivial, then no one should want to copy them in the first place. They could just as easily differentiate themselves with an equally "easy" "trivial" implementation.
Have you ever heard of "reverse engineer"? Or should everybody start suing everybody just because the way the car door is open or the power switch flip up to turn on the light?
Many cons in the US make hundreds of millions buying and selling patents. No wonder a stupid phone cost $1000. I'm boycotting products that make crooks rich. You can support them for all I care.
When you participate in a standards body for industry-wide implementation of your IP, you have to agree that you'll license your technology in a Fair, Reasonable, and Non-discriminatory manner (FRAND) - otherwise the standards body won't include your IP because you could hold everyone who uses the standard hostage.
Apple has participated in such standards - take the IEEE 1394 standard known as FireWire or i.Link or Lynx. Apple invented FireWire and charged something like $1/port (which PC makers deemed too expensive and refused to include in most PCs). FireWire was a high speed isochronous real-time data transfer protocol, which Intel dislike because it didn't require heavy CPU involvement in the data transfer.
Think $1/port is expensive? Let's look at how Qualcomm (who participated in the LTE standard) thinks FRAND should be implemented: their take is 5% of the selling price of your entire device. For an iPhone X at $999, that would be $49.95 - $57.45 if you elect to get the 256 GB storage upgrade.
All the sour grapes on here, haha. I love all the butt hurt for the OLED screen and cost for 64GB. Way to go to focus on the negatives and totally blow off the things they did push the envelope on: Facial recognition to unlock, a ridiculously good camera, and a CPU that rocks anything on the Android side, probably for the next year or two... But go ahead sour grapes, tell us your Android had OLED (with sh*tty colors and battery sucking resolution) years before and we all know the edge to edge screen being delivered a year before on all the Chinese phones... No, China is the innovator on phone tech *eyes rolling back in skull*.
The S8 is nice piece of kit as well. Let's see what Google unveils with the next Pixel.
There's a funny kind of timeline involved with Apple products.
Ming-Chi Kuo - who somehow seems to have a vulcan mind-meld with Apple plans - announces to the world that Apple's next device will have an edge-to-edge display which will make the phone look like a window to the other side of the world.
Everyone and his sister in China and South Korea will jump on this and throw something together to implement it first.
Apple finally gets its engineering and design together, and assembles a supply chain capable of churning out tens of millions of the devices.
Android fans will happily gather here post-announcement claiming that Apple's copied the idea.
A stupid overpriced phone ... nothing in it deserves the $1000 price tag ...
What this phone missed to deserve that price :
1- Ceramic back instead of stupid glass . 2- Fingerprint scanner on the Edge of the phone (example Sony Xperia phones). Forcing people into Face ID is just plain stupid. 3- At least 128GB storage to justify the $1000 price tag .. 64GB for such a price is just too low. 4-IPad pro pen compatibility.
and IMO those stupid Emojis should never been advertised as a selling point of the phone this just too childish and for kids.
Fastest CPU on the market, possibly paired with one of the best screens, one of the best cameras, and TrueDepth sensor. I have to say my favorite on your list is "Forcing" people into FaceID... Why not complain they're forcing you into a 5.8" screen. How about forcing you into an on-screen keyboard while you're at it.
Gorgeous phone ! People bitch and whine over the price but if they had the money, they would snap one right away. I had various Windows laptops over the last 10 years, with the exception of one, all of them gave me all kinds of problems. A guy I know has been using the same Macbook Pro for the last 5 years. Not a single problem. Rock solid. So I took the dive this Spring a bought a 13 inch. Never been happier. Come November, I'll be getting in line at the store to get one. Status symbol ? Nonsense. It's a damn good phone, just like the Macbook Pro.
it is and overpriced phone and yet you did not address any point I put about why it is overpriced.
I am an IPhone buyer since iphone 4 so keep your fanboyism to your self.
I allways buy the to model as well .. that is at least 128GB of storage ..
I owned Iphone 6 plus , 6s plus and 7 plus.
and this garbage Apple X is not worth the money. I am buying the Iphone 8 plus by the way.
I had expectations for the X , like I said to pay $1000 for it . I want the Ceramic back and the finger print sensor on the edge at least and at least 128GB for that price.
I CAN pay for a Ferrari if I want by the way , but I never put my money on garbage.
and the X is a garbage for $1000
Xiaomi managed to add Ceramic on their flagship phones long time ago and are selling them for $650.
If Apple wants to make a $1000 phone , the should convince the buyers not steal them
Ferrari's are overpriced too. Do I want one ? You bet !!! I keep buying those lottery tickets every week. Just about everything these days is overpriced. You go to a Coffee Shop and pay 2 bucks for a 10 cents cup of coffee everyday, don't you ? The list goes on and on. I'm not a fanboy. I just think the phone is gorgeous. Pricey too. But who cares, if you've got the money ? Value for money is hard to come by today. When every corporation wants to make record profits every quarter. And they usually do.
If you think everyone "bitch", what about you with a few posts yourself? I wonder have you ever called your mom that? So you're not a fanboy. You're just one financially irresponsible low class.
" People bitch and whine over the price but if they had the money, they would snap one right away. " not me.. id pick up almost any other phone out there.. and save 300-500 bucks for something else... in canada.. this 999 US dollar phone.. will be 1200 i think it was.. if not a little more..the 256 gig.. id guess.. 1500 or more.. i sure dont have that kind of cash to spend on a phone.. sorry cocochanel.. but people were talking about this phone at work.. and none of them would spend this kind of money on ANY phone... and most agreed.. any apple product.. is indeed a status symbol.. cause they are over priced for what you get.. vs what us out there
In Canada, it goes for $1319. I agree with you on most points. Yet, when I read your comments, it reminds me the way I used to think 10 years ago. Back then, every nickel had a value. I'm not super rich right now, but I get by nicely. Say you made 100 grand a year. Wouldn't you buy one ? How about 200 grand a year ? Still wouldn't budge ? How much everything costs is relative to how much you make. Do you see my point now ? Time flies. Fifty comes fast. And life is crazy. The only happy memories you'll ever have is the happy times you had. And that includes a few toys. I hope one day you'll come around. If not, you'll wind up like a few folks that I know. Old, lots of assets, but never had a life. If you like something in life, don't hesitate. Go for it. That's all there is to it.
Oh, the Iphone X is garbage? Thanks for letting me know. :)
I think a fast CPU is good for recording 4K video at 60 frames per second. And for gaming and augmented reality. Pretty sure it will be of good use not only for an Ipad.
You have got a point about the power button placement in Sony flagships. Thats the most ingenious and intuitive thing to do. I love them for such things. About the face id. If it works perfect, nobodys gonna complain. We dont have the device yet in hand. The one we saw must have a lot of bugs too. Lets wait for them to release it.
You lost me at "forcing people" when there's not only no reason to buy an iPhone but when this is a low-yield anniversary model and they came out with a great YoY update called the iPhone 8 that has Touch ID.
Not everybody needs 128GB. In fact, almost nobody does anymore. Almost everybody streams anyway, and pics and vids are backed up to the cloud. It is not 2007.
Ceramic is a *lot* heavier than "stupid glass". When you drop it, it won't suffer a higher delta-V, but there will be a lot more kinetic force to dissipate - your case will be much more likely to smash with a satisfying krunch.
I think they were always planning to put Face ID on the front camera (with the subminiature Xbox Kinect) - they just couldn't figure out how to put a reliable Touch ID sensor on as well.
I'm kinda looking forward to a notification screen which gives you a generic "you've got mail" notification, until you pick it up and give it your attention - at which point it unlocks and the notifications reveal themselves. Must smaller possibility of unwanted information leakage.
You know, everyone is complaining about the price and features like Apple's holding a gun to their heads and forcing them to buy it.
If you don't want that additional technology and want a fingerprint sensor, there's a phone which contains most of the iPhone X's technology and speed called the iPhone 8 Plus. It's cheaper, and even has a 16x9 aspect ratio, so videos are actually taller and more screen filling. It's also got Qi and fast charging, so you really don't miss out on much beyond the True Depth camera, the OLED display, and a stabilized f/2.4 OIS 2x rear telephoto.
Fastest phone processor ever made. Best display in any phone. Most advanced camera system of any phone. Most advanced mobile OS. It’s worth the price tag. It’s just a question of do you need the tech?
That last slide with all the phones is unusual for apple. 8 different phones all being sold at once!?!
If you put it into the regular terms, the 8 is really the 7s, and since the body hasn't changed, you coukd say it is the 6sss, and the X is the 7 :)
I'll be interested to see how this product differentiation and price hike goes for them. Obviously it will sell (its apple), but which will sell more, the 8 and 8+ or the X?
I'm vaguely in the market for a ohone in the sense that I really wouldn't mind upgrading from my 6, and the X looks great, probably my perfect size, and the screen seems fantastic, but we'll see how they price it with contracts and such. Maybe I'll get the Xs.
Anything 7 and up would be a nice upgrade from the 6.
The 's' designations don't really mean much - they're more an artifact from the 5s when whole numbers meant a form factor change, and the 's' meant a rework of the guts of the phone.
The iPhone has become more like the MacBook pro, where they settled on a form factor that works well and stuck with it. This has the advantage wherein an upgrade improved the capabilities of the device, but your 6 doesn't feel obsolete because the exterior looks much like the current year's model. It's the opposite of planned obsolescence.
>games where swiping up is a key mechanic of the application. In order to get the list of applications in memory, then swipe up but hold the finger down on the screen. Apple neglected to mention how to put the phone to sleep / screen off mode – there is a button on the side, but that is specifically for Siri. In order to get the notifications menu, swipe down from the top.
Re gestures, it looks like Control Center is a drag down from the top right of the screen, while Notifications is a finger drag-down from the top left of the screen. No notes yet though for how to power-down the phone (conflicts with the Siri button?), although locking looks like it is just a quick press of the side button; and another mystery is how to take a screen-shot now that there's no home button.
All brand hate aside, iPhone X is a good phone (just shows how dated iPhone 6 - 8 Plus designs are). Just overpriced by about 30% compared to similar competition, but it is not new at all. And at that price, given real life performance and the level of support and security it is not as ridiculous as buying "one update a year too late" Samsung.
Not to mention the fact that this phone will give evil men more of an inducement to throw acid.
Punish people who have been injured or maimed by chaining the ability to open their phone to their appearance? I hope Apple has thought of this problem and come up with a good solution.
Nowhere in there did I see anything that said "and here is why you should replace your Priv!" granted, that seems to be equally true of all the other phones coming out this year so Apple is hardly to be blamed. And you know, that's fine by me. Let them keep iterating and hopefully when I need to replace this at least one of these bloody manufacturers will still be making a phone with a keyboard. Oh, and turn my FREAKING data on automatically to receive MMS like my Xperia Mini Pro did.
Stuff like that may not be sexy, but in a mobile device I use every day it matters a hell of a lot more than making an already plenty fast processor 20 percent faster and an already very nice screen 20 percent nicer.

WOW! Just Amazing. Big 5.8” Edge-To-Edge OLED Display, Advanced Facial Recognition System - Face ID & New Wireless Charging Feature will be a breakthrough for the futuristic iPhone X.
iPhone X (iPhone 10) with a slim 5″8 inch OLED screen, FaceID 3D recognition, chip Bionic A11, the camera supports Portrait mode both before and after, the frame around the body of Iphone X is made of polished metal, wireless charging QI. Great!!!

Isn't every display "edge to edge"? LOLLove the fact that it's OLED though.

Depends on which edge you are measuring from. Pretty much every display is edge-of-display to edge-of-display, by definition. And none whatsoever are edge-of-device to edge-of-device, though some have some pretty thin bezels.nathanddrews - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link

The fact is... This is a high-end "FLAGSHIP" there is no excuse for any cutbacks, it's called a flagship for a reason. - All Apple is doing is incorporating features that have been standard in other devices for years and selling it as something new.

Probably useless if you got a phone with crappy SOC and a tiny battery. Double the amount of battery mAh would add about 1mm of the phone thickness. But Apple cons always look forward for your purchase of a new iPhone again next year.A new iPhone might be faster than a new Android phone even tho its hardware is weaker because iOS "talk" directly to the hardware, unlike Android system. But here's the catch - Apple has ALWAYS released new updates to slow their devices down. Guess why?
Oxford Guy - Saturday, September 16, 2017 - link
1) It's ridiculous to obsess over pixel size for a device that gets covered in fingerprints.2) It's ridiculous to obsess over color quality in a device that gets covered in fingerprints.

Guess which display is better for reading and more pleasant to look at?nikon133 - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
I wasn't that impressed either. It is nice phone, but asking price is quite rude, imho.I like what they have done with top and bottom of the phone - but sides do have noticeable border around the screen.
Oxford Guy - Saturday, September 16, 2017 - link
There is more to screen quality than pixel count. In fact, OLED screens can be worse with a higher pixel count when it comes to lifespan and brightness. Then, there's the issue of color — gamut and accuracy.Of course Apple's stuff is overpriced, though. One perk that comes with that price tag is better phone support.

Redmond Pie published the A11 Geekbench scores:> 4061 Single Core and 9959 Multicore

The ratio is probably to adapt to many small tasks plus some big ones.Have to say it leaves an impression that's faster CPU than A10X both single and multi which is just, ahh i would bet X SoC won't be broken by phones this year.
Has to be examined.
blackcrayon - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
They were already multicore. The A10 is a 4 core chip. And in a sense, they are still sticking with their "our phones should have 2 very powerful cores" philosophy- there still isn't anything else that's going to touch the two front cores for raw performance.tipoo - Thursday, September 14, 2017 - link
Difference being A10 had a hardware switcher that only allowed two active cores at once, while A11 allows all six at once if there is load there, more like recent big.little.The per core performance gain is there, but Monsoon isn't too much above the Hurricane cores in the A10X in this case. I wonder if they're going to hit that Intel single core performance wall.

In essence, a lot of that is software-based instead of being a limitation on OLED hardware, and it's dishonest for Apple to imply otherwise.Oxford Guy - Saturday, September 16, 2017 - link
OLED has had the issue of lifespan, especially with blue pixels. As for well-calibrated, a flagship phone just came out that has a delta E of 4.8, which is not impressive.
MrSpadge - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
Their claim of insufficient colour accuracy seems dubious. They should have checked out the Lumia 950/XL.philehidiot - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
It's possible that this has become quicker and cheaper and as a result economically viable.I still wouldn't have one. Pretty happy with my S8 with all its Bixby nonsense shut off.
I also can not wait for someone to glue a passport phone on to an egg and fool the new security system.

They say brightness was a problem for OLED.IF that thing can reach same brightness as the iPhone 7 (they say so) at full screen white, then color me impressed - that's amazing perf from an oled panel.
Apple watch series 2 already does that, but it's bit smaller screen than the iPhone X (on a log log scale) and Apple actually markets it as 1000 nits while white is at ~ 600 if I remeber.
Just woried that it's gonna consume like 2W of power at that brightness, just to light up the screen.
phoenix_rizzen - Thursday, September 14, 2017 - link
Brightness is not a problem for modern OLED. In fact, I find my S7 screen to be too bright, especially when the "full sun" mode kicks in when outside. I usually find the auto-brightness to work well, except when outside. It gets too bright and washes all the colours out, requiring turning off auto-brightness and actually lowering the screen brightness. In full dark, even at the lowest brightness setting, it's still too bright. You can definitely use a blank tab in Chrome as a flashlight without going above 50% brightness; although the phone will get hot if you do that for too long.

If design patents are so trivial, then no one should want to copy them in the first place. They could just as easily differentiate themselves with an equally "easy" "trivial" implementation.boozed - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
That doesn't even make sense.sonny73n - Thursday, September 14, 2017 - link
Have you ever heard of "reverse engineer"? Or should everybody start suing everybody just because the way the car door is open or the power switch flip up to turn on the light? Many cons in the US make hundreds of millions buying and selling patents. No wonder a stupid phone cost $1000. I'm boycotting products that make crooks rich. You can support them for all I care.

When you participate in a standards body for industry-wide implementation of your IP, you have to agree that you'll license your technology in a Fair, Reasonable, and Non-discriminatory manner (FRAND) - otherwise the standards body won't include your IP because you could hold everyone who uses the standard hostage.Apple has participated in such standards - take the IEEE 1394 standard known as FireWire or i.Link or Lynx.

No, China is the innovator on phone tech *eyes rolling back in skull*.The S8 is nice piece of kit as well. Let's see what Google unveils with the next Pixel.

There's a funny kind of timeline involved with Apple products.Ming-Chi Kuo - who somehow seems to have a vulcan mind-meld with Apple plans - announces to the world that Apple's next device will have an edge-to-edge display which will make the phone look like a window to the other side of the world.

A stupid overpriced phone ... nothing in it deserves the $1000 price tag ...What this phone missed to deserve that price :
1- Ceramic back instead of stupid glass .
2- Fingerprint scanner on the Edge of the phone (example Sony Xperia phones). Forcing people into Face ID is just plain stupid.
3- At least 128GB storage to justify the $1000 price tag .. 64GB for such a price is just too low.
4-IPad pro pen compatibility.
and IMO those stupid Emojis should never been advertised as a selling point of the phone this just too childish and for kids.
blackcrayon - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
Fastest CPU on the market, possibly paired with one of the best screens, one of the best cameras, and TrueDepth sensor. I have to say my favorite on your list is "Forcing" people into FaceID... Why not complain they're forcing you into a 5.8" screen. How about forcing you into an on-screen keyboard while you're at it.cocochanel - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
Gorgeous phone ! People bitch and whine over the price but if they had the money, they would snap one right away.I had various Windows laptops over the last 10 years, with the exception of one, all of them gave me all kinds of problems. A guy I know has been using the same Macbook Pro for the last 5 years.
Not a single problem. Rock solid. So I took the dive this Spring a bought a 13 inch. Never been happier.
Come November, I'll be getting in line at the store to get one. Status symbol ? Nonsense. It's a damn good phone, just like the Macbook Pro.

yawn ... Fanboys every where ...it is and overpriced phone and yet you did not address any point I put about why it is overpriced.
If Apple wants to make a $1000 phone , the should convince the buyers not steal them
cocochanel - Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - link
Ferrari's are overpriced too. Do I want one ? You bet !!! I keep buying those lottery tickets every week.Just about everything these days is overpriced.
And they usually do.

cocochanel - Thursday, September 14, 2017 - link
In Canada, it goes for $1319. I agree with you on most points. Yet, when I read your comments, it reminds me the way I used to think 10 years ago.Back then, every nickel had a value.
Go for it.
That's all there is to it.

fastest CPU ? no one cares this is a phone and not an IPAD ... no one uses that extra speed.the best screen ? not really Samsung made it and they exist on their flagship phones.
and is is stupid to compare the loss of fingerprint sensor to the size of the screen.
FACE ID is garbage compared to fingerprint sensor. not as functional. and if they want to add it fine but dont take away the fingerprnt sensor
and whats you problem fan boy ? they can easily put it on the power button on the edge like Sony did with their phones .. not a big deal

You got everything correct man 👍🏿varase - Friday, October 20, 2017 - link
Ceramic is a *lot* heavier than "stupid glass". When you drop it, it won't suffer a higher delta-V, but there will be a lot more kinetic force to dissipate - your case will be much more likely to smash with a satisfying krunch.I think they were always planning to put Face ID on the front camera (with the subminiature Xbox Kinect) - they just couldn't figure out how to put a reliable Touch ID sensor on as well.

That last slide with all the phones is unusual for apple. 8 different phones all being sold at once!?!If you put it into the regular terms, the 8 is really the 7s, and since the body hasn't changed, you coukd say it is the 6sss, and the X is the 7 :)
Maybe I'll get the Xs.
varase - Saturday, October 21, 2017 - link
Anything 7 and up would be a nice upgrade from the 6.The 's' designations don't really mean much - they're more an artifact from the 5s when whole numbers meant a form factor change, and the 's' meant a rework of the guts of the phone.

In order to get the notifications menu, swipe down from the top.Re gestures, it looks like Control Center is a drag down from the top right of the screen, while Notifications is a finger drag-down from the top left of the screen. No notes yet though for how to power-down the phone (conflicts with the Siri button?), although locking looks like it is just a quick press of the side button; and another mystery is how to take a screen-shot now that there's no home button.
varase - Friday, October 20, 2017 - link
I think swiping up gets you to the home screen, and if you're unlocked a press on the side button locks the phone, whereas a long press invokes Siri.Hold the side button even longer and you get the standard shutdown slider.
Annoying will be that a swipe up gets you to the home screen, not the launcher screen which was last up when you launched the app.

All brand hate aside, iPhone X is a good phone (just shows how dated iPhone 6 - 8 Plus designs are).Just overpriced by about 30% compared to similar competition, but it is not new at all.
And at that price, given real life performance and the level of support and security it is not as ridiculous as buying "one update a year too late" Samsung.
