I saw a demo where a couple (I think 5?) Intel 750 PCIe SSDs hard locked a system because the processor (a 5960X if I remember correctly) couldn't handle writing to all of them at once.
I can't think of a time where a modernish processor couldn't handle a storage array of any size.
I wonder if we will ever talk about CPUs the way we used to with slow spinning HDDs, as a fact of life that it basically is the slowest part of a computer and there is basically nothing we can do about it.

It probably froze because the write-back throttling mechanism was disabled, they were using blocking io, or thru had the max_aio_nr set too low.valinor89 - Tuesday, August 15, 2017 - link
