Wut? A temporary launch exclusive in a desirable product by the only OEM that was willing to make AMD servers back in the day is hurting them? Getting a threadripper desktop out the gate, when construction never saw a single win in 4 years, is bad?
There are some factors you might not be considering. Dell is a pretty big company so their sales numbers reflect large volumes and AMD might be supply-limited so an exclusive deal might not hurt as much as you'd think.
No, it's not the most compact chassis design out there, but considering the power that this thing should have over the Mac 'Pro' (tubular design), that Mac would get wrecked in workload comparisons.
They're using 4 slots, whereas with quad channel they could go to 8 slots for maximum capacity. Those wouldn't run at DDR4-2933, though. Furthermore, currently "only" up to 16 GB DDR4 non-server modules are available. That might change in the future, and if it does Ryzen should also support 32 GB modules to reach those 256 GB.
no thanks ... it is very huge for nothing ... learn how to use space then sell a PC DELL ... alot of wasted space that contributes nothing , not in Expandability nor in cooling .. just a stupid shape.

Good to see major OEM like DELL fully backing AMD Ryzen processors. They already released Ryzen 5/7 desktop PCs and AIO PCs. Now this is even better.Their full support all Ryzen processors probably the reason why AMD agreed for exclusivity on Threadripper processors.

i hope AMD will use the time to avoide a ryzen debacle.don´t get me wrong the CPU´s are great but the mainboards where just a nightmare after release (and some are still a PITA to use).
i hope this time AMD delivers a solid and stable platform.

Why is AMD always shooting itself in the face?Exclusives can only hurt them, it's like they are actively trying to mess it up.

A new author I see?I like your writing more than some other writers on Anandtech, as a matter of fact. I look forward to seeing more articles from you in the future. :)

Apple should take note. THIS is how you design and lay out a custom workstation class computer.Expandability? Check.
Flexibility? Check.
Repairability? Check.
Upgradability? Check.
Cool design? Check.

In today's E3 Alienware stream, AMD said Threadripper actually supports 256GB.Unsure why Alienware's is maxed out at 64GB.

I would guess that it's space constraints. They probably don't have enough space to put more than 4 dimm slots.sna1970 - Wednesday, June 14, 2017 - link
