What's everyone's opinion of this Omen brand? Their stuff seems OK but I've never seen it out in the wild. And what about the pricing?
  • jimjamjamie - Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - link

Sorry by pricing I mean what's everyone's thoughts on it.

    seems overpriced. $799 for 2560x1440 27''TN monitor? F.that

Do you have any experience with ULMB, 120Hz+ and higher quality TN panels?
Because the color reproduction and viewing angles are quite decent.
The best part is, no noticeable blur at all.

Still, having said that, an Asus RoG PG278QR, with the same 165Hz and G-sync, can be had for $669, so this HP monitor is at least $130 over priced.

Higher quality TN panels? This exists? The last TN I used was around 2014ish. I think it was a $400 BenQ? Light boost for shooters made that wonderful for games, but the color wash/fade even looking dead center from bottom of the screen to top killed it for reading anything.

PG278Q looks fantastic, at least for a TN panel. It is also pricey for a TN panel, but there is no noticeable color inversion or poor color reproduction.

I have used one of those Korean 27" 2560x1440 A-grade IPS monitors that have good color reproduction and good viewing angles, but very bad ghosting.
I know what really good quality panels are, as I do have a Surface Pro 4.

That eGPU box is still quite bulky, but at least it looks more interesting than others, has space for hard drives, and a multitude of ports, so it can be a real docking station. That makes the price more palatable than other eGPU solutions.

That dock is huge! It looks to be about the same size as a mini ITX PC!

That's true for most eGPU boxes, unfortunately. The only reasonably small one I've read about is the Zotac Thunderbolt 3 External Box, which can only fit short, bus powered GPU's. But given the generally big size of these boxes, at least the HP comes with enough extra features to make it feel more worth it.

VR is turning into the industry's latest swan dive into the no-sales junk heap. It probably doesn't cost much for HP to turn up to that party with a high-margin system catering to that market. Who could fault them for trying to squeeze a little profit from that segment if they can do so with minimal cost and risk before it makes its last few gasps?
  • Alexvrb - Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - link

Just to be clear, you think VR is a rapidly dying fad? Even before the impending affordable mid-range $400 VR kits that include the headset, motion controllers, and inside-out tracking?

(For reference existing high-end models are around ~$700-800 for loaded setups after adding motion controllers and motion cameras for outside-in tracking.)

Can the external graphics docking station GPU and the USB-C Thunderbolt 3 connection to the laptop output the GPU accelarated content (eg a game) to the laptop screen? Or is there a need for a dedicated input on the laptop (eg HDMI input)?
  • genekellyjr - Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - link

As I understand it, Windows supports video passback to the laptop screen - which takes a bit more bandwidth from the eGPU.
  • StriderGT - Wednesday, June 7, 2017 - link

Thx for the answer. Has someone done a benchmark for the video passback penalty imposed to the external GPU? It is an interesting scenario, could anandtech provide such a test?
  • cfenton - Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - link

Anyone know if these eGPU boxes are proprietary? In other words, can I plug any (Windows) computer with Thunderbolt 3 into this dock and have it work fine, or will it only work with HP laptops?
  • Ro_Ja - Wednesday, June 7, 2017 - link

Should work on all laptops with Thunderbolt.
  • SharpEars - Thursday, June 8, 2017 - link

    TN Panels, all interest lost...

These items actually look good, and the price on the 25 inch monitor and the graphics accelerator aren't all that bad, although the PCs and the 27 inch monitor are overpriced.
