Sounds like a paper launch to me, by the time these chips are available Prescott will be ready. This smacks of desperation on Intel's part due to the gaming performance of Athlon 64 and 64-FX. My dilemma is whether to get an athlon 64 next week or wait till the 939 pin version is out.

u can always use some spare cache to surf some porn sites
  • Anonymous User - Thursday, September 18, 2003 - link

What the hell. Figures Intel is going after the idiots. More cache isn;t going to do cr@p for games.

..hmm but i'll after the opteron anyway..btw price is always a considerable factor (in my opinion) =>

I assume this chip will need a new motherboard compared to current C core P4's. If it does - then people wanting to get one of these will PROBABLY go Athlon 64 + new motherboard for longevity purposes instead of slightly-updated-p4 + new motherboard

Yeah, I don't know what happened to my account - I go by KalTorak everyplace else...
Anyway, yeah, I was in the back of the room for Louis's keynote, and I taught a session this afternoon.

If ya get a chance, check out the demos at booth 16 in the Intel pavilion; there're some pretty cool glass-box demos there of forthcoming stuff.

Or We can't look so far behind AMD.

Let the war begin indeed... :) This market needed some renewed competition. Things were getting too predictable!
  • sprockkets - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Sad. Guess 1MB on the Prescott just wasn't enough. Hell, next generation we'll have 5, cause that's the only way to succeed!!!

Desparation? Not really. It's total domination. Intel has to maintain a step ahead, or at least be competative. We can look so far behind.

AMD can never really kill Intel. Perhaps IBM/AMD can...

Ummmm, Aga, I think you;ve had to many drink tonight. Sure the extra L3 will reduce some latency, but nothing like how an onboard memory controler. But it won't have that much effect. On the Xeon it gives a 10% increase max.
  • AgaBooga - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

The L3 cache is kind of like what AMD's memory controller does, reduce latencies. For more info, read Anand's post here:

I have always like the way the mouse works better plugged into the PS2 Vs the USB port. I have tried it both ways and USB feels different when I move the pointer real fast. I am sure the motherboard they were using had at least 2 USB ports. Everything does now a days.
  • Anonymous User - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Actually I'd expect "extreme" users to use the PS2 over USB ;) Personally, USB always freezes up my mouse at random times for no apparent reason and it gets really annoying in gaming. Just pump up the ps2 refresh rate to 200hz and it's easily better than usb for mousing cuz USB needs some extra cpu time.

EE isn't a "normal" xeon tho, xeon MP is only FSB400 this monster is FSB800.
  • Atropine - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

I was wondering what the deal was with the USB to PS/2 adapter. What, no USB ports on the "extreme" gaming PC?
  • Anonymous User - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

#8 YEAH!! hahahaha...that was the first thing i noticed. that is too funny. too extreme for me, i guess ;)
  • Souka - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Heh, on the first page, the picture with the caption "Intel demos the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition
" notice how the forground PC is using a USB-to-PS/2 adapter for the mouse? heh....

For what it's worth, the front page says "massive L2 cache" when it should be "massive L3 cache" (at least I assume that's what was meant)
  • dvinnen - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Cache is over rated in non-data base related tasks. I dought this will add much real world proformance, and by no means close to AMD64.

Also, about follow ups, this is based off the Xeon MP (which even Toms said was sucky) so I dought there will be any upgrades till a Xeon based off prescott will be released.

Also, any idea on the thermals of it? It's going to be a huge die size running hella fast.

And this was announced this morning according to the INQwell.

I would keep my eye on this cpu also. But this goes to show that the current 3.2ghz out now stands no chance against an Athlon64 even in Intels eyes =)
  • AgaBooga - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Ok, thanks! Oh, BTW, who are you? You didn't login so it says Anonymous User. I take it you were there too? ;)
  • Anonymous User - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

I dont expect this added cache to add all that much to the 3.2ghz P4's realworld performance, 5-10% (at a very generous max).
  • Anonymous User - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Louis mentioned in the press Q and A (all of 20 minutes ago - damn, Anand posted this fast!) that it's not based on Prescott, but I think he said that follow-ons would be.
  • AgaBooga - Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - link

Holy!!! Wow, that will *definetly* put some competition on AMD. I mean, 2.5MB L2 cache in the next 30 - 60 days! Wow!

I wonder if this is based off of Prescott or just something to hold them out until Prescott because if it has a newer version of hyper threading, that may be even better. This is a CPU I'll have my eye on...
