Instead of driving higher brightness levels using backlights, why not just use sunlight viewable screens so the backlight can be turned off to save power? Even the original Gameboy Advance was more intelligently designed in that regard than most modern smartphones.
I've been thinking about this so long. Why none, not even Sony (the ones with all the wickedly cool ideas) couldn't think about this? This should be an issue with Android I guess.
How come all SD835 devices still use QC3.0? From what I understand it requires new power IC but it was released before the SD835 was, so what's up with that?
Quite amazing they can pull this off at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, they removed the headphone jack. I am expecting the next Mi5s will retain the jack and camera. Even if they do, I will still not buy it as I have set my mind to get an OLED for my nxt phone. I will wait for the next OnePlus or the refurbished Note 7
I'm not... I Have a Mi4 and like every other phone running MIUI it has a built in FTP server. Turning it on, transfer stuff faster than the speeds of crappy MTP connection.
I am hoping this ceramics fad passes over. I Still use my nexus 4, wich has iself survived the original bumper and is still in good condition, but I think using more glass/"fragilematerialoftheyear" than necesary is dumb.
We have faux carbon fiver but no one can make one with the real deal? Who cares if it flexes a bit? Can I have a phone without glass? Or a screen with just enought glass that it is scratch resistant but thin enought so it can bend slightly?
Carbon fibre pretty much blocks out RF entirely, even better than most metals, which is why phones aren't made of it and why you don't see phone cases made of it.
Sadly Xiaomi does not have any of the US LTE bands, So those phones are pretty useless in US unless you don't mind a phone without 4G. It's shame we don't have anything like this for ~$350
Sadly they don't have all EU LTE-A bands either (except for some global export models, which are insanely more expensive). It's a Chinese phone for (mostly) Chinese market. Can't blame them for doing that. That's where the growth is.
Sad to see Xiaomi regressing by removing the 3.5mm headphone jack :( Possibly worse is that they aren't building on the momentum of the Mi Mix by reducing those huge top+bottom bezels. The Mi 5 was at least competitive with flagships like the S7, but this time around it looks like the S8 is way better... and it's mostly by copying Xiaomi's bezel diet (on the Mix).

Reflective screens have a lot of other drawbacks that you don't really want to deal with in other environments.FreidoNumeroUno - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link

How did Xiaomi get 835's but LG wasn't able to?Agent_007 - Wednesday, April 19, 2017 - link
Xiaomi waited. LG wanted to get the phone out before Samsung.halcyon - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link

When this phone is sold in north america and supports all carriers we'll see just how reasonably higher it costs.halcyon - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link
They have sold the mobile phones basically priced at cost of production. They plan to recoup profits from other operations (eventually).johnp_ - Wednesday, April 19, 2017 - link
Is the USB 2.0 Type-C port confirmed? If yes, this would be a big disappointment, because the Snapdragon 835 actually would support USB 3.1...Meteor2 - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link
Does anyone ever still do data transfer over cables these days? If so, why?damianrobertjones - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link
Yes, yes they do. Maybe you're in the minority on this one. I'd rather transfer through cable, knowing that it'll work, than leave wireless on.halcyon - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link
Why not? Fast, convenient and you recharge while you do it.SydneyBlue120d - Friday, April 21, 2017 - link

At 168g it's pretty heavy for 5" phone, ceramic version is even more at 182g. Dimensions wise, it's pretty similar with Mi 5s but a bit thinner.realbabilu - Wednesday, April 19, 2017 - link

Won't they just swap out the modem for NA?A5 - Thursday, April 20, 2017 - link
The X16 modem isn't the problem, but it would probably require some tweaks to the antenna design. But Xiaomi doesn't really care about the NA market, so I doubt they'll put in the effort.
