Why isn't anyone other than Qualcomm going for an A53 and A72 core mix? The A53 isn't fast by any means so one fast A53 cluster still isn't as powerful as two A72 cores clocked at a lower speed.

The Kirin 960 in the Mate 9 is A72/A53.

Imo the 2*high end and 4*low end cores is the ideal setup. 4*A72 just overheats, takes too much power and clocks down where as 2 of them doesn't - it's often a disadvantage buying a high end phone for those reasons. That said you only really need the A72's if you game, for most of us the 4*A53 is plenty fast enough and it gives great battery life.

MediaTek also has A72+A53 combo in X20 and newer chips.

But yeah, it feels quite silly to release A53 only devices in year 2017 (in price range over $250)
