Not even ten minutes in and this feels like total marketing tripe. What's the point of this event?

Yea one of the biggest disappointments was the Microsoft Studio coming with a 980M, other than that seems like a good device. (what did he quote "12k in 3dmark" haha)

I wonder what other telemetry they have in store for Windows users? Can't wait to get more of my data harvested! :^)
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Yeah, It's a really sad state of affairs when an unlicensed copy of XP-SP2 abandonware without any MS updates provides more security than a brand new "Legit" copy of Spyware Platform 10

An aftermaket firewall stops ALL Microsoft components from sending or receiving and Driveshield stops ALL persistent threats (except the end user)

Not worried about extortionware at all here

Wouldn't use it for online banking though...
That's what Linux Live is for!
  • SpartanJet - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

    HAHA

Yes this is the year for Linux! (running joke for 20+ years). Good luck with that and I'm sure you are one of those idiots complaining about security but you hand over all your personal data to that ad company by using ADroid.
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

    You are sure!
    and you are wrong

I don't mind using Spyware Platform 10 for security purposes....
after I disable ALL networking components and use Truecrypt Full Disk Encryption on my Win2Go ThumbDrive

Yes kids, Truecrypt 6 and 7 are fully compatible with WintoGo using either Windows 8 or 10

Just make an MBR partition and Stay the He&^ offline

Encryption does no good with Microsoft backdoors

    Windows 10 is like cake
They sell you the cake as they eat it too
    Don't trust the cake

    The cake is a lie
  • Alexvrb - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

So you don't use Android? Cause Android harvests more data than you can believe. Google is 90% ad revenue, and that means selling your every move to the highest bidder. I hope you're using a nice homebrew Linux phone, the way you're spouting off.

Oh, and Truecrypt has critical flaws and was abandoned by its creators. True story.
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

    That's funny Alexvrb

Can you point out the "critical flaw" in the Truecrypt Source code
We would all love to see it

or should we all trust Microsoft because they are so honest, they must hide what they are doing in their source code

There must be a reason why the NSA has a codename for Bitlocker

Do they call it "Instant Access" because every encrypted disk uses a 32 digit Key identifier?

You do realise that the Courts would protect Microsoft Source code if they diddn't steal other peoples work or are hiding backdoors

If they have nothing to hide, they wouldn't be hiding the source code

They have proven themselves untrustworthy with our data at every turn so until we can verify the sourcecode, they must not be trusted

Trust is not a "feature" they can simply tack-on or win by defaming anyone who opposes their tactics

There is a bit more to it than that
  • ddriver - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

I use android without google services installed. It harvests literally nothing. You can easily get android without google, only the open source part, most roms today install without any google cr@p, which you have to install additionally, if you so chose.

  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

I always give plenty of warning ahead of time so so can notify your buddies at the NSA and elsewhere of the challenge

Nothing but trash talk about how easily they could hack my box or destroy it with malware and yet I'm still using it online waiting for ANYONE to do what they say they can do

    Nothing but blah blah blah
    Just like the responses here
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Friday, October 28, 2016 - link

Basically I offered to leave my box online and logged in the the websites listed under my usual screen name for 24 hours so they can verify it is really me

I then gave them permission to hack my box and post the credentials I left on my desktop within that 24 hour period

There was no affiliation with ZDNet or Maximum PC

  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, October 28, 2016 - link

Hang on a moment. You specifically posted, "I held 24 hour contests at the old Maximum PC and at ZDNet to allow..." and now you're posting, "There was no affiliation with ZDNet or Maximum PC."

Make up your mind about which yarn it is that you'd like to spin to us.

At any rate, you're saying you offered to be logged on to a set of listed websites (what sites?) under a usual screen name (what name?) for 24 hours. Offered to where? To whom exactly? What mechanism were these nation states and government agencies advised of your offer? You see, anyone can sit at their desk and say aloud, "Here I am China, logged into webmail for the day. Come get me!" and then proclaim that after a day when nothing happened their computer was secured against intrusion attempts.

Why not post your current public IP address here in the comments box and then leave your equipment powered up and connected for 24 hours?
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Friday, October 28, 2016 - link

If I offer you the same conditions to hack my box within 24 hours, it in no way implies that I am affiliated with AnandTech

and how come you don't have my public IP address?

are you a hacker or not?
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, October 28, 2016 - link

XP is not more secure. There are a lot of holes in the OS that are not and never will be patched because it's not gotten support in years. There are certainly cases where using XP isn't optional because of business-software related problems or personal finance issues, but it's a much better idea to move to a more modern OS if at all possible. Windows 10 is a data mining platform with a laundry list of data privacy concerns and I cringe when I have to use it, but it does better protect the end user from malicious actors. Well, malicious actors aside from Microsoft anyway. In that respect, Windows 10 meets a lot of computer security industry criteria that'd classify it as a Trojan Horse, but exclusively for the company.

Linux is a great alternative and is my primary OS, but I think it's unrealistic to expect the vast majority of people to transition to it. There are a lot of barriers in the way of widespread adoption and I feel confidant in saying Linux not replace Windows as the most widely used OS. I've been tinkering with Linux since 1999 and made a full transition in 2013. It wasn't painless and I think most people would be too discouraged to stick with it. For the vast majority of average people, Windows is just fine. They'll just have to live with data mining because avoiding it means not only dumping Microsoft products, but also Alphabet/Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the multitude of advertising firms out there. Most people can't live without a cellular phone (or at least think they can't anyway) so they're pretty much tagged and tracked everywhere they go. If not by that, then by their game console, their smart television, their car's infotainment system, or whatever else.
  • Bullwinkle J Moose - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

    Yeah, it IS more secure

YOU are NOT a security expert!

    I AM

Do your own research instead of listening to the same criminals who are pretending to protect you

I concede that most of you will not know how to protect an XP box if you try
I concede that you will fail 100% of the time when you listen to "The Experts"

but you will NEVER be secure when you back a rigged system that steals "your" future and hands it to the Criminals who are pretending to protect you

I would probably be banned for calling you all liars or idiots but there really is no 3rd choice

It's one or the other I'm afraid

There's no way you're a security expert of any sort. If you were, you just discredited yourself and nobody will take you seriously anymore. Anyone with a brain knows XP has more holes than swiss cheese and a lot of modern software packages (including the best up-to-date security software) no longer support it.

Given your responses in this conversation and claims of affiliation with Maximum PC and ZD, that involve international hacking attempts on a desktop PC operating system (Really, North Korea has very limited contact with the English speaking world and the NSA _does not_ and _will never_ engage in hacking competitions hosted by small private companies like MPC or ZD. Neither will most nation states in the sense that the country itself will operate under a national banner at a hosted event from a magazine publisher or online tech review site.) it's blatantly obvious you're using the anonymous nature of Anandtech's comments features to make unverifiable, false claims to support unreasonable assertions.
  • BurntMyBacon - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

@Bullwinkle J Moose: "Do your own research instead of listening to the same criminals who are pretending to protect you"

I'd love to and I've taken more than a few looks around to find alternate sources of information. Problem is when I look online for information (you know, to research it) I get pointed to all kinds of places that support the same viewpoint as these so called "criminals" and their best security practices.

    @Bullwinkle J Moose:
"I concede that most of you will not know how to protect an XP box if you try
I concede that you will fail 100% of the time when you listen to "The Experts""

Yet you offer no alternate source of information from which we may benefit. Without this information we have two choices: an XP box that, as you say, most of us will not know how to protect if we tried, and a Windows 10 box that "The Experts" tell us is more secure, but is also known to be more invasive of our privacy.

    @Bullwinkle J Moose:
"YOU are NOT a security expert!

    I AM"

Tell me, if you would immediately believe a post with the following characteristics:
From an unknown entity on a random tech forum.
Claims to be a security expert, but provides no credentials or supporting information.
Discounts your own possibly extensive knowledge on the subject matter without knowing anything about you.
Provides no supporting information with which you might be able to evaluate and possibly even accept the proposed point of view.

I could go as far as to accept your claim of expertise at face value. Yet, this would do me no good whatsoever as your proposition that we should all drop Windows 10 in favor an XP box is marred by the fact that that we don't have the apparent expertise to secure it and you are too concerned with posting unsubstantiated claims of being hack-proof by state actors (who have no incentive to hack your nor tell you whether they were successful) to so much as point us in the right direction.

Congratulations on having the only "secured" XP box in the world. For us lesser mortals, we have to make a trade off that gives up one of security (Our XP boxes), privacy (Win10), or flexibility (Linux distros). Of course, you could always point us to the places you acquired said expertise. Who knows, you might even get some people supporting your viewpoint and make the world a better place.

    Wow BurntBacon
That was actually quite a well thought out comment

I make XP Read Only with Driveshield
I use an aftermarket Firewall and block EVERYTHING except my browser
Yes, I even block ALL security software from sending or receiving (They are usually the problem)
No Flash or Java allowed (Noscript/adblock etc)

The only way in or out is through Browser flaws (ALL Microsoft components are blocked)

I run the OS with FULL ADMIN rights!
    No security updates from Microsoft

Just a free antivirus WITH NO SECURITY UPDATES!
Targeted strikes CAN be made by updating an antivirus

If I need a newer antivirus, I simply download the FULL package and install it offline

I have tested malware against from thousands of shady sites over the years and I think it is about as close to perfect as I can get it at this pioint

Fresh installs of Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates has been hosed several times by malware but the XP box is still going strong

I would gladly use a newer version of Windows if they had one without all the spyware built in

    but until then, this works

This one is (oddly enough) apparently true. The 2016 J.D. Power study shows it loosing out only by a very small margin to Apple's iPad (which isn't a laptop device). Also, Apple and Microsoft get the only 5 stars in the study index. Now, you may find the study flawed or you may decide there are better studies out there, but at least they can actually point to something that supports the statement:

28 inch surface with pen pressure sensitive support? Hopefully it is full featured ( predictable pen behavior slow or fast, driver support on most applications day one, angle and >1024 levels )

In Maryland Institute college of art as a student I remember being indoctrinated to not work timidly with small surfaces but working large with my shoulder and sweeping with my whole arm when putting down marks. Not hunched in on tight little spots one becomes overly precious with in detail but to work in broad overall strokes and composition all at once strategies that large surfaces reinforced.
Back then a lot of students had the same portable back board made out of homosote cut from a panel at 4' x 2' which we punched 2 holes along a top edge to facilitate lacing up a shoulder strap.

To this one would affix nice large quality paper like arches or Rives BFK with tape ( or push pins cause homosote substitutes fer cork nicely! ) and one was good to go... And that was for the most part my backboard art board surface that I used for many years till it finally wore down.
The thing is... that 4' x 2' surface was what the discipline resulted as ones "portable" solution. You could sit outside on a hill and balance the board however one could manage and did your landscapes or character studies in a park or in the town square around the docks.
Usually u managed some sort of foldable easel as well so your homosote panel could double as backing for portable easel and oil painting.

Fast forward to today where I do everything digital.
Now I do not expect a 4 ft x 2 ft portable tablet to be released anytime soon and have a market understand providing a viable realistic demand that appreciates the work large discipline belief...
But I got to chuckle when I read comments complaining at any tablet that is over 13inches being to unweildly to realistically be portable!
    Hah!
    double hah!
And one has got to wonder?
When did artists become such big wussies?
I would love a 17" portable pressure sensitive tablet for outdoor sketchpad capturing on the go.
And this All in one could be a god send for a main working beast of burden for most my pen enabled needs.

( even tho secretly I be pushing fer a day when I could take that 28 inches out in the field and actually have a 10 hour battery life. I am willing to bet the AIO in this article is still lighter than my old homosote art board! :) . Although my Homosote artboard would not require hundreds of feet of extension cable to take it outside )

I`d much rather have paint.net functionality built into the system than this 3d bullshit. Give me working layers, some simple filters and levelling tool.

Paint.net is an awesome program. I use it all the time.

Layers are awful the way they are now.
Is it that hard to outright copy how Photoshop does it? It`s a goddamn standard for a reason.
