Gimme a mi 5s with those bezels...
  • dsumanik - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

Wow, completely owned the iphone design at half the price, nice job xaiomi
  • adriangb - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

If they release a <6" phone with these specs (including the large battery) and a next gen CPU in 2017, that'll be my next phone
  • Drumsticks - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

That would be nice, but I don't know where you'd expect to find space for the same size battery in a smaller phone.
  • ImSpartacus - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

I'd be ok with a thicker device.

But then again, I'm in love with devices like the Galaxy S7 Active that have disproportionately large batteries and generally rugged designs.
  • adriangb - Saturday, October 29, 2016 - link

Idem, a slightly thicker device I'm OK with. For example, I own a ZTE Axon 7 ATM, and it has a ~3200mAh battery and a camera bump. If they made the back level with the camera, I'd think they could fit a 4000mAh battery. Add bezelessness to it and it would be the perfect form factor IMO.

I was thinking of the same thing, 6.4" screen is pushing it too much.
I would like 5.5" to 6" screen, so it'll be a one hand phone.
  • Mumrik - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

I always wonder about that. I'm a big dude with big hands, but even 4.5" (Moto G, gen 1) is too much for me to comfortable reach across diagonally while one-handing. It's fascinating how 3.5-4.0" used to be the standard, but now is all but dead.
  • Yeahokbro - Tuesday, November 1, 2016 - link

You're obviously not that big of a dude, since I'm a big dude and I can handle the nexus 6's and note 5's larges screens with one-handed ease... I'm looking forward to this.
  • vaporcobra - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

It's really wrong to think of it as a 6.4" screen, as you are. Better to use the comparison Xiaomi used: the Mi Mix is essentially the exact same dimensions as an iPhone 7 Plus. That's the major benefit of next to no bezels.
  • amdwilliam1985 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

yeah, Mi Mix 6.4" is about the same size as iPhone 7 Plus, which is NOT one-hand-friendly. If we reduce Mi Mix to 5.5" or 6" then it will be one-hand-friendly.
  • fred666 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

with no bezel this phone is not that much bigger than an iPhone Plus. Only a little wider and no taller.
  • mat9v - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

I don't get it frankly. Why can't I use both hands to operate the phone? Outside very strange emergency situations I should be able to use them. Playing with my phone while driving should not happen and outside of that.. no reason to use one hand. Beside that, big phone has many advantages over small one - easier to read, bigger battery, better multimedia experience, games anyone? Sure, your pockets may not like big phones and it's mostly a pain to sit down with such a phone in them but I would still choose big size :) And yeah, I use Xiaomi Mi Max and the battery lasts 3 days with 10 hours SOT or 7-10 hours of gaming :)
  • fanofanand - Tuesday, November 1, 2016 - link

Try eating an ice cream cone while posting on Facebook. I believe that is the target market for most of these devices.
  • hpglow - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

I would buy the mix right now to replace my note 4 if it were offered in north America.
  • happymedium - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

I vote we keep these sweat shop operators out of our markets.
    More jobs Americans will lose.
    buy American!
  • amdwilliam1985 - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

there are no smart phones made in America!
  • Flunk - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Not since Motorolla gave up, no. There are no American smartphones.
  • StevoLincolnite - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

Rest of the world will keep buying more and more Chinese though and less American made stuff, the world market is larger than the US market.

Your protectionist rhetoric won't turn the US economy around, it will just exclude you from participating in the worlds markets, it doesn't solve your issues and lack of competitiveness on the world stage.
Heck, I can't even remember the last time I bought an American-made product here, it used to be a common thing when I was younger.

If you Americans cannot compete on price, then you need to compete on Quality and Innovation and Service, loose that edge, and people will start to purchase Chinese stuff, why do you think Chinese phones are gaining traction? The Phone market has slowed and started to stagnate.

It's a hard pill to swallow if a Chinese Phone that is priced at $200 can do almost everything an American Phone that costs $1000 can do... And the American Phone doesn't get any support after a year on the market.
  • webdoctors - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

I don't think its a fair comparison. What price is QCOM selling the 821 for in China? If the Taiwan and USA guys could get it at the same price, they'd sell their phones cheaper. The SoC is most of the phone and its all designed by QCOM in San Diego, so its hardly a "Chinese" phone technology wise, or as much as an Intel inside desktop by Lenovo...
  • Adi_Nemesis - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

FYI, qualcomm chips are not made in America and R&D is done collaboratively with offices in the UK/US and largely in India because engineers in India are willing to work for a fraction of the price of American engineers. https://www.qualcomm.com/invention/research/locati...

Then these chips are actually made by either samsung (Korea) TSMC (Tiwan) or Global Foundries (Middle East / Asia) or in China. Yes qualcom is based in San Diego but do you think you can justify calling its chips 'American' ? I hardly think so.
  • fanofanand - Tuesday, November 1, 2016 - link

For now, the US is still the largest market for most products so no, the US economy would not be excluded. You are reciting the globalist viewpoint which has decimated the workforce of most advanced nations.

Oh yeah!! Just wait for all those glorious american phones to show up and remember BlackBerry :(
  • mkozakewich - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

    Sorry, that one's on Canada.
  • StevoLincolnite - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

Wish they would use more durable materials. Not a fan of Ceramic or Glass. - Scratches and breaks to easily.
And like all other Gloss surfaces... It is a Fingerprint magnet that looks disgusting as soon as you touch it. (Not ideal for a device you need to hold in your hands.)

I do like the 6.4" sized screen though, often I use my mobile device instead of a tablet and at 5.7" I wouldn't mind going even bigger.

They should have probably avoided using the "Note" name after the exploding battery fiasco from Samsung's Note 7.
  • Asubmani - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

This isn't the ceramic they use in Kitchen ware. Hard Ceramic is considered 2nd only to Diamond in toughness. Look up Tiatanium Carbide (a ceramic). Certain type of Ceramics are also used in spacecraft for its toughness :) . Mi MAx may not be the same grade as the top grade stuff in spacecraft, but it should be tougher than the metal they use on most smartphones
  • azrael- - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

    It's very brittle, though.
  • mat9v - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

That's what oleo phobic coating is for. My phone has such and no finger prints or smudges on the screen. If you like 6.4" and such a coating Mi Max has it, go and try in some shop :)
  • HideOut - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

yet another phone with no MicrosSD card. Guess I wait longer...
  • LukaP - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

with 256GB available, there is hardly a need for an SD card...
  • creed3020 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Exactly! This is an unprecedented leap in internal storage, and to boot it is UFS 2.0, so should be quite a strong performer.
  • mkozakewich - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Something else to mention: You can now buy wireless HDDs. You can store terabytes of movies to watch on the go.
  • zeeBomb - Tuesday, October 25, 2016 - link

I wish the Mi Mix was smaller...but the concept and engineering behind it is beyond stunningly stupendous. That's what I call **True innovation**.
  • azrael- - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

I'd prefer a phone that's about 5" in height. How that translates to screen size is of secondary importance to me.
  • Asubmani - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Just when I got the best phone per $ (Axon 7)!! good news is I can still return it and get the Mi Mix :) Wait.. when is it launching in the US?
  • halcyon - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Never. China only. Aliexpress self-importing works. No global LTE bands live for Mi Mix. That's only for Mi Note 2 global edition.
  • scmorange16 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Waiting for an AnandTech review on Xiaomi Mi Note 2 6GB/128GB (global)
  • halcyon - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

... and the bend test of Mi Note 2. Mi 5 broke like a cheap cracker with very little force being applied.
  • Ultraman1966 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Whilst I know Samsung has done artistic copying in the past, that Mi Note looks exactly like a galaxy edge/note 7. I mean, it's not even an inspired by but actually has little difference to the galaxy phones. As such, I doubt these will ever reach places such as Europe or USA where IP protection is taken seriously.
  • mat9v - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Galaxy Edge still has the upper bezel with speaker and camera - completely different from these phones.
  • mat9v - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Sorry, you were writing about Note version, my bad.
  • 3ogdy - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Over $500 or about €500?! Xiaomi, I could buy myself a family of Chinese slaves, store them in a warehouse and have them build the phone for me for that sort of money. Think about it: that includes shipping fees too and moreover it also includes food for them. I wouldn't even have to go to China to get them - they are already here, doing exactly that, by themselves. Imagine what could happen if somebody bought them for this. Great people make great things happen!
  • serendip - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Plenty of rich people in China who won't bat an eyelid at the Y4000 price. Don't be a racist troll.

Xiaomi are moving up the value chain now. It's up to them, I won't be buying these because I'm a cheap b*st*rd but I'm glad they make cheaper phones.
  • Pelle Mursu - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

Thankl you Xiaomi for the international version of Mi Note 2! But we really need an international version of MIX, too.
  • pashhtk27 - Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - link

When you have two phones names Mi Mix and Mi Max, there's bound to be a lot of confusion.....wonder what Xiaomi was thinking with the name Mix.
  • Ro_Ja - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

I guess this is what you call Edge for Less. Good job Xiaomi!
  • mrvco - Thursday, October 27, 2016 - link

They need to rebrand the MIX as the "Xiaomi Compensator". I'd love to see a 5.2" version, even if thicker.
  • realbabilu - Friday, October 28, 2016 - link

As an owner of Iphone 7 plus and Xiaomi mi4c, I am hoping maybe I get chance to China again to buy it. Unfortunately the top chart like mi5 when I was arrived, was not sale on their offline store at Guangzhou. Oh dear what a beautiful. 😍

I don't how this Guy got this first

"Unfortunately, its 1920x1080 resolution is less than ideal for such a large display."

I would strongly disagree with this sentiment. The pixel wars are absurd at this point. Even if the phones aren't available in the UK or US would it trouble the author too much to provide the Pound/Dollar comparison to whatever currency you have listed? It would be nice to be able to compare hardware levels at different price points between different companies, even if we aren't able to acquire said handsets.
  • fm13 - Thursday, November 3, 2016 - link

hmmm, massive tablet-like battery+Quick Charge in a thin frame=trouble (see Note 7). also, why 1920x1080 is "less than ideal" for a device with a 5.7" screen? is there a point pushing past 1920x1080 with this display size?
