Some are much better than others. I've got a phillips VA monitor and it's nearly as good as an IPS, in fact better than more than a handful of them that I've seen. And it has significantly better contrast.
Just curious- Do you have the Philips BDM4065UC? If so how do like it? I'm looking at the newer 43" model BDM4350UC but I'm concerned about the IPS glow on the new one.
I have a Philips 144hz TN gaming monitor, with an external control selector thing. It's a great monitor. For gaming. Everything else sucks. It's impossible I calibrate and is basically too bright and washes everything out. The color, contrast and black levels are all terrible, almost the worst I've seen since dual scan displays on 1990's laptop.
But it's amazing for gaming. 144hz and the brightness often helps. It also has two quick access presets I conveniently have setup for the only two game types I play, FPS's and racing sims.
This. They're either way too thick (this) and they're just unsightly, or they're way too thin (New Asus ROG) and you see tons of QA problems because the tiny bezel isn't suitable for preventing backlight leakage from every point around the monitor's bezel.

How good are the viewing angles of those AHVA panels really? I had a Sony laptop with a VA panel before, and it was really much closer to TN than IPS.ragenalien - Tuesday, May 31, 2016 - link

AHVA has nothing to do with VA.AHVA is pretty much IPS, just named differently.

As above. It's already found in a lot of well-regarded desktop monitors - http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/content/panel...Integr8d - Thursday, June 9, 2016 - link
