Introduction
Welcome to the first installment of the CPU and Video Card Price Guide for June 2001. We publish this article to help you the consumer, find the best deals on the 'net. All the tedious work like finding the best prices and locating reputable retailers has already been done so all you have to do is figure out what product is right for you. As always we encourage the reader to investigate every retailer's reliability before ordering, but we have tried to eliminate typically problematic ones from our price guides.
If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will investigate their removal from our list. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.
Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week
The cooling continues this week in the Intel front as we see very little change in prices for all lines of processors. We expect prices to begin dropping soon, however, once Intel's recently announced price cuts begin to take effect.
AMD's line of processors also show little change in price this week. However we are surprised with yet another Athlon-C (266MHz FSB) processor - the 1.4GHz part. We also expect AMD to follow Intel's footsteps and announce a price reduction soon.
There is not much action in the video card segment this week. We see some slight price hikes in 3dfx cards and a slight drop in NVIDIA cards and the recently released KYRO II.

This week we again see minimal changes in price of the Pentium 4 line of processors. The flagship P4 can now be found for an even $360, while the 1.5GHz part fell $5, putting it at $250. The 1.4GHz model rose $6 this week, but still barely remains under the $200 mark. We should note that investing in a new Pentium 4 not only involves buying a processor, but also an expensive i850 motherboard and RDRAM. For more pricing information on these items, check out our Weekly Memory & Motherboard Price Guide.
The Pentium III segment also saw little change in price this week. The 1.0GHz processor fell $18 and now can be found for $187. The 800MHz EB part fell $17 and can now be found for $140. Those looking to build a high performing system on a budget should look into the 750MHz and 733MHz parts which can each be purchased for $102 and $103, respectively.
This week Intel announced a price cut on their mobile and Celeron lines of processors. We should see the effect of this reduction by the next price guide as it takes several days for the changes to take affect. Overall, the Celeron line relatively quiet this week. The 800MHz chip fell $4, putting it at $75 while the 667MHz part fell $8, putting it at $48.

This week AMD blesses us with yet another Athlon-C processors - the 1.4GHz part. Although it has a relatively cheap introductory price of $234, it is quite expensive compared to other Athlon-C processors. Expect the price of this part to drop soon once it is officially announced by AMD. The 1.33GHz Athlon saw a $13 price reduction. The rest of the Athlon-C line remained relatively unchanged this week. We should note that the new Athlon-C processors require a motherboard capable or handling the 266MHz FSB. Check out the Memory and Motherboard Price Guide for more information and read our latest comparison to find out what chipset you'll want to pair up with your new CPU.
The Athlon-B line of processors did not see much change this week. The 1.3GHz processor fell $9 putting it at $160. The 1.0GHz part fell slightly to $122. Although these faster Athlons have come down significantly in price, we still recommend the 1.0GHz part as is offers similar performance to it's brothers at a lower price and also generates less heat.
The Slot A Athlons again saw almost no change in price this week. The 700MHz Thunderbird chip fell $3 putting it at $49. Those looking to upgrade an older Athlon system need only upgrade their motherboard's BIOS is order to support these higher clocked processors.
Just as Intel is cutting prices on their Celeron line or processors, AMD is expected to announce similar price reductions. Like the rest of AMD's line of processors, the Duron line saw very little change this week. The 850MHz part fell $2, putting it at $53. Those looking for an overclocking solutions should look at the 750MHz part which is now only $32.

The reader should note that 3dfx's acquisition by NVIDIA will result in them not being able to provide support for their cards, so purchase a Voodoo3/4/5 card at your own risk. Video cards from 3dfx saw little change in price this week. A notable rise in price came from the Voodoo4 4500 AGP, which rose $26. The Voodoo3 3500 remains a great deal this week at $64. This card is an excellent deal for those wanting TV tuner input and video out on their PCs.
ATI's lineup of cards showed little change this week as well. The 64MB DDR Radeon saw the largest drop in price this week - $13. Those looking for a cheaper, fast Radeon should look at the Radeon 32MB DDR LE. Please read our recent review of this card for information on how to unlock it's hidden potential. Those needing dual display capabilities should look into the ATI Radeon VE.
For NVIDIA this week we also see little change in price. The GeForce3 showed a slight increase in price this week. It can now be found for $344. The GeForce2 ULTRA showed a $5 price reduction and can be found for $243, just over $100 cheaper than the GeForce3. Our favorite, the GeForce2 Pro, can now be found for $178. We recommend the Pro over the standard GTS because it uses faster 5.5ns DDR memory which alleviates some of the memory bandwidth constraints found in 6ns cards.
The KYRO II saw a $6 price drop this week. This card offers performance similar to the GeForce2 GTS but at a cheaper price. The KYRO II is a unique card because it uses a tile based rendering engine. Check out our KYRO II review for more info.
The Matrox line of cards saw minimal changes in price this week. Those looking for excellent dual display capability may wish to purchase the Matrox G450 card as it has proven itself well in this category. For more information check out our Dual Display Comparison.
