Introduction
Welcome to the second installment of the CPU and Video Card Price Guide for May 2001. We publish this article to help you, the consumer, find the best deals on the 'net. All the tedious work like finding the best prices and locating reputable retailers has already been done so all you have to do is figure out what product is right for you. As always we encourage the reader to investigate every retailer's reliability before ordering, but we have tried to eliminate typically problematic ones from our price guides.
If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will investigate their removal from our list. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.
Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week
This week we see things start to cool off for the Pentium 4 line of processors. The rest of Intel's processors saw a small downward trend in prices as well.
AMD's line of processors are also seeing the cooling effect as prices, although still falling, are falling at a much lower rate.
Not much changes for 3dfx and ATI video cards this week. However, we do see the price of NVIDIA's new GeForce3 begin to fall as well as the the arrival of the KYRO II.

This week was relatively calm for the high-end Pentium 4 processors. The new 1.7GHz chip fell a mere $25 this week, putting the flagship P4 at $359. The "lesser" P4's saw similarly low price drops this week: the 1.5GHz part fell $11, the 1.4GHz $13, and the 1.3GHz $10. The 1.4GHz part is the best deal right now, as it sits just under the $200 price mark. We should note that investing in a new Pentium 4 not only involves buying a processor, but also an expensive i850 motherboard and RDRAM. For more pricing information on these items, check out our Weekly Memory & Motherboard Price Guide.
The Pentium III front also saw minimal price fluctuations this week. The 1.0GHz part fell $5 this week, putting it at $205. Those looking to build a high performing system on a budget should look into the 750MHz and 733MHz parts which can each be purchased for $103.
The Celeron line of processors saw some significant price reductions this week. The 800MHz part fell $10 putting it at $79. We recommend this model because its 100MHz (FSB) alleviates some of the bandwidth limitations seen on older 66MHz FSB Celerons.

This week we don't see much action in the Althlon-B or C segments. The 1.33GHz and 1.2GHz parts fell $3 each. The 1.13GHz part fell $35 and is now on par with the rest of the Athlon-C line. We should note that the new Athlon-C processors require a motherboard capable or handling the 266MHz FSB. Check out the Memory and Motherboard Price Guide for more information and read our latest comparison to find out what chipset you'll want to pair up with your new CPU.
The Athlon-B (200MHz FSB) segment also showed slight downward trend in prices this week. No Thunderbird fell over $11 in price while most fell between $2 and $6. Although these faster Athlons have come down significantly in price, we still recommend the 1.0GHz part as is offers similar performance to it's brothers at a lower price and also generates less heat.
AMD's Slot A Athlons saw very little change this week. The 800MHz part fell $6, putting it at $78. Those looking to upgrade an older Athlon system need only upgrade their motherboard's BIOS is order to support these higher clocked processors.
Like the rest of AMD's processors this week, the Duron line saw little change in price this week. The 800MHz part fell $3, putting it at $45. Those interested in overclocking should look into buying the 750MHz part which can now be found for $34.

The reader should note that 3dfx's acquisition by NVIDIA will result in them not being able to provide support for their cards, so purchase a Voodoo3/4/5 card at your own risk. The Voodoo5 5500 AGP rose $10 this week, putting it at $119. The PCI equivalent remains the same price this week. The price of the Voodoo3 3500TV also rose in price this week to $64. This card is an excellent deal for those wanting TV tuner input and video out on their PCs.
This week we see little change in price of ATI's lineup of cards. The Radeon 32MB SDR saw a $6 price reduction. We recommend the Radeon VE over the SDR the useful dual display feature which has become popular on many low end cards. The SDR card does, however, provide better gaming performance than the VE. Please read the ATI Radeon VE review for more information.
We should note that several readers have pointed out that there are a few major differences between the Radeon 32MB DDR (Retail) and the Radeon 32MB DDR LE (OEM) which many online retailers fail to point out. The Radeon LE is actually a crippled version of the Retail card and does not feature ATI's Hyper-Z technology. It is important that readers understand this because Hyper-Z can have a significant effect on performance. The Radeon LE was originally meant to be an OEM product for some of the Asian markets. However the success of the product in those markets was overestimated and ATI was forced to bring the product to the North American market. The Radeon LE chips are generally composed of those chips that fail to work properly as fully functional Radeon solutions, meaning that they are often clocked at lower core frequencies and may not have fully functional HyperZ units. Many readers have been reporting success with overclocking their Radeon LEs as well as by forcing HyperZ to be enabled on the boards however proceed with your own risk as there are no guarantees. For more information consult the AnandTech Forums.
For NVIDIA this week, we see the new GeForce3 come down slightly in price to $342. The rest of the GeForce line of cards remains relatively unchanged in price this week. The GeForce2 ULTRA, now slightly under $100 cheaper than the GeForce3, fell $3 in price. Our pick, the GeForce2 PRO, fell $4 and can now be found for $179. We'd recommend the PRO over the standard 64MB GTS because it uses faster 5.5ns DDR memory which alleviates some of the memory bandwidth limitations found in the 6ns cards.
The KYRO II finally rears it's head this week in our video portion of the price guide. It debuts at $115, only $13 cheaper than a GeForce2 GTS. This card is unique because it uses a tile based rendering engine and performs like a GeForce2 GTS. Check out our KYRO II review for more info.
The Matrox line of cards saw minimal changes in price this week. Those looking for excellent dual display capability may wish to purchase the Matrox G450 card as it has proven itself well in this category. For more information check out our Dual Display Comparison.
