Introduction
Welcome to AnandTech' s first
weekly price guide. This article is designed to guide you through all of the
latest price changes on selected products. For ease of use we broke our guide
into two main sections: CPU/Video card Prices and Memory/Motherboard prices.
Each guide will be updated and replaced every other week, meaning that today
you will see CPU and Video card prices, while the Memory/Motherboard Price Guide
is scheduled for next Friday.
The basic goal is to provide you with the best deals, and show you the progress
of listed products. We have selected a leading team of on-line vendors, and
will be tracking their progress on weekly bases. Please note that all vendors
were selected according to their best price offered. Some vendors may ask that
you place a phone-order to make sure that you receive our listed price; others
simply ask that you mention a list where you found the price (In this case AnandTech).
We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage
you to do some sort of a rating research before purchasing any product from
this list.
If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will take appropriate action. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to email us.
Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great CPU, video card and other technology buys.
Disclamer
AnandTech does not endorse any vendor listed in the following price guide. AnandTech does not receive any advertising fees or/and sponsorship contracts from the listed vendors. All views expressed by listed vendors do not reflect the opinions of AnandTech.
AnandTech, nor any of the vendors mentioned guarantee that the prices listed in this guide.
This week
This is our first week, so it will serve as the beginning to our tracking progress. Most prices are dropping, while some result in a steady price stall, and others even rise here and there. We have listed several new products, and anticipating the arrival of several others; such as 133MHz FSB AMD Thunderbirds. While you might not be able to take advantage of the listed Intel P4, we decided that it's a very interesting product to track.

Intel is moving slowly but their prices are finally getting lower.
The fastest Intel CPU is still the 1.0GHz PIII, which comes to $463.
Best buys this week are the 866MHz and 850MHz PIII models, which can be had for just under $235. Keep in mind that these are still high-end CPU's, which make excellent upgrade options. If you prefer to spend a little less, then the Pentium III 667MHz is your best bet.
The absolute low-end CPU from Intel is the Celeron FC-PGA, which offers good performance for the price. Celerons seem to be moving a little slower, and at this point the 566MHz model is the best buy for this week.
Overall Intel is dropping prices in anticipation of the P4 line of CPU's, but it's still not enough to satisfy many people who would like to see a real Intel vs. AMD price-war.

AMD prices are dropping like a stone, which seemingly never reaches the bottom of the pit. AMD is offering three different types of CPU's: the high-end AMD Athlon Thunderbird, the Athlon Classic, and the Duron. The Athlon Classic is the older and slower version of the Athlon (1/2 - 1/3 speed 512KB L2 cache), and is slowly disappearing. This CPU should only be your choice of you own a Slot-A board, and for $170 you can buy the 900MHz model.
The newer AMD Athlons that use the Thunderbird core and the low cost Duron CPU's both come in the Socket-A package format, so upgrading becomes a lot less messy. The fastest 1.2GHz Thunderbird is priced at a relatively competitive $492, which is about the price of Intel's 1GHz PIII. For just $251, the 1.0GHz Thunderbird becomes a very good upgrade alternative as it is the cheapest 1.0GHz CPU on the market.
The best AMD buys this week are the 750MHz ($104) and 900MHz ($161) parts. Durons are dropping in price as well, $60 for the 700Mhz model is very attractive, not even considering the overclocking potential.

3dfx is the only manufacturer suffering in this field. Their current flagship, the Voodoo5 5500AGP is priced at a harsh $234 versus the NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS 32MB, which is priced at a more competitive $152.
The best performance buys this week are the ATI Radeon 64MB DDR and the NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS 32MB.
The worst buy would be the NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra, which is just shy of the $450 mark however it does currently deliver the highest performance level.
The NVIDIA GeForce2 MX is a best buy in the low-end field, which proudly surpasses the 3dfx Voodoo4 in terms of performance.
If you do decide to go the "NVIDIA Route" there are many different manufacturers for you to consider. The current price leader is VisionTek, which in most cases offers good performance, and great prices. Their cards are easy to find and priced at up to 15% bellow the competition. Another great offering is ASUS with their lines of GeForce2 GTS 32MB and GeForce2 MX cards, which we have recommended especially for those of you that want more features.
