Corsair Releases 90GB Force Series 3 and Force Series GT SSDs
by Kristian Vättö on August 18, 2011 12:24 PM EST
Corsair just released two new 90GB SSDs: Force 3 and Force GT. Both drives were released a while ago, this update just adds the 90GB model. Corsair claims up to 550MB/s reads and 500MB/s writes on the Force Series 3 and 555MB/s reads and 505MB/s writes with the GT. Both are based on SandForce's SF-2281 controller, but the Force Series 3 uses asynchronous NAND (like OCZ's Agility 3) while the Force GT uses synchronous NAND (like OCZ's Vertex 3), hence the minor difference in performance.
Corsair is actually the first manufacturer to release a 90GB SF-2281 SSD. There are a few 90GB SATA 3Gb/s SSDs, such as the Vertex 2 and Agility 2, but none based on SandForce's latest controller.
The 90GB drive retails at $159 for the Force 3 and $199 for the GT version. Compared to the 120GB capacity the cost per GB goes up with these drives. The 90GB Force 3 is slightly more expensive at $1.78/GB ($1.67/GB for 120GB) while the GT comes in at $2.22/GB ($1.88/GB). At current prices the 120GB Force GT is only $25 more than the 90GB model, making it a better buy.
Both models are available immediately from retailers (though none seem to have stock yet).
