1.35kg with a 17" display and an 80Wh battery is impressive.
  • Bulat Ziganshin - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

I'm pretty sure it's without battery which adds ~300g. At least, it was the figures for the previous model
  • WPX00 - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

Nope. it actually is with battery. I've handled one.
  • qhd - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

This is ultra impressive. I couldn't really believe it at first when I read that the 17-incher is lighter than my Macbook Air 13-inch. And with almost double the battery...

Good! That should be the port selection on any mid to upper take laptops. Impressive specs.
  • nicolaim - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

Too few TB/USB-C ports, but otherwise solid!

A 4K LCD would be nice...
  • rrinker - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

There's always one... just how much stuff are you plugging in to a laptop anyway? Plenty of ports on there.
  • danielfranklin - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

I like the resolution, there is a possability of running without scaling, assuming you sit close and have good eyes.
All in all it makes a very interesting laptop even better.
I feel like this device is finally complete after a few attempts. Intel just wasnt there yet to provide the GPU etc for it.
Fingers crossed the firmware has a 25w mode like in the Dell XPS 2in1, it really takes this chip to a new level and becomes the best all round mobile chip we have ever seen.
  • Bulat Ziganshin - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

this laptop has weak fan, so it hardly can deal with 25w
  • crimsonson - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

4K screen means a highh power draw, which means bigger battery, which means different dimensions.
  • WPX00 - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

At least there is a TB.
  • yetanotherhuman - Friday, December 13, 2019 - link

Nah, 4K is a bunch of old crap for laptops, you'll barely be able to visually distinguish it, but price rises and battery life falls, a shit-awful tradeoff

Just get an external usb c charger with extra usb-c ports. They now sell them up to 100 Watts and they aren't that big. I use one and power the laptop and a small fast usb-c charging wireless disk for my phone.

Beware, if the laptop loses charge completely, the onboard thunderbolt port while bi-directional will not charge your laptop. Due to an oversight or a bug, it's auto-detect setting is only active while Windows is running. If Windows isn't running it reverts back to output only. If you restart Windows, it reverts back to auto-detect which doesn't help you if the laptop loses power completely.

Seems that setting is not available to be set in the Bios, only at the OS level through the driver.

I learned the hard way and had to go to the only store that had this laptop on display and get enough charge to boot up windows while I was travelling. Ordered a compatible charger through amazon that same day. So now I have one at home and one as a backup for when I travel.

What happens when resting one's palm on the trackpad when typing on laptops like this?
  • rrinker - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

On my HP, I can double tap the corner of the trackpad to disable or enable it. Since I always use an external mouse (I HATE trackpads, no matter who makes them - there is no good one), I usually just keep it disabled so there is never any accidentally click or drag. On the rare occasion I need to just quickly get some info and it's not worth it to dig out the mouse, or there's no room to sue the mouse such as on an airplane, I'll use the trackpad, just a quick tap and it's back on and working. I would expect this is pretty much the same across most laptops these days - if not, I'm glad it's a feature on the one I have.

I have fairly large hands and it's not a problem when typing on my Gram 17 (2019).

Waiting for that 14" Asus Pro B9, the 880gram laptop coming out 1st quarter 2020! Now THAT'S a laptop I'd wanna upgrade to!(for us road warriors)
  • sharath.naik - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

Are they saying it cannot handle the 32GB ram sticks?
  • p1esk - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

2019 model can, and I currently have 40GB of RAM in mine (8 + 32).
  • Bulat Ziganshin - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

    Ice Lake can't
  • Alistair - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

nice the one thing i was waiting for
  • p1esk - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

This seems to be a good update (better CPU + better cooling), unfortunately speakers are still very bad - not only they are only 1.5W each, probably the cheapest speakers they could find, they are also downward firing, so the laptop must be placed on a hard surface when watching movies. Otherwise it's just not loud enough. Basically, if you intend to use it for multimedia, use headphones.

    LG makes laptops?
  • HStewart - Thursday, December 12, 2019 - link

Is this CPU the same as Dell XPS 13 2in1 2019 version or does this have upgraded IceLake CPU - information does not indicated what the CPU - I am curious what 2020's IceLake;s will be like.

I always thought 17" was too big, but this is incredibly sleek. Very impressive, and I'm loving the return of the classic high end 16:10 2560x1600 screen
  • keith3000 - Friday, December 13, 2019 - link

Agreed. 16:10 screens are worth their weight in gold, especially at the 2560x1600 resolution. I'd take this over a 4K screen anytime. My old eyes would never be able to appreciate the extra pixels. All it would do is drain the battery faster.

Been waiting for Ice Lake refresh since I got my wife the Gram 17 2019 edition, because... it is a REALLY NICE laptop indeed.

P.S Gonna add a GTX2070 eGPU for home desktop use, I am never more complete...
  • 0x1874DE4C - Monday, December 16, 2019 - link

24GB max RAM eh? Please say it isn't one soldered 8GB with a slot for up to 16GB. Because a) that isn't enough, and b) it means single channel mode.

I was hoping for 2 sockets this time.

I have a Gram 17. My favorite feature is the light weight, obviously. But there are several compromises. 1) The keyboard is really awful... poor tactile response and lots of missing keystrokes. 2) No ethernet port (only a USB ethernet adapter). 3) LG Webcam occasionally causes the system process to spike CPU consumption and sends the fan into overdrive, even when you're not using it; had to disable the webcam to stop that behavior (which also helped battery life).
