Sounds like the equivalent of my 14" laptop that's the size of what used to be 13" laptops, but taken to 16" inside what used to be 15".

That sounds right given the price.

Yeah. An option with 2K screen for the higher specced version would have been really good

Are there any recent laptops with 2/3k displays in normal aspect ratios, or is that resolution limited t just Apple doing its own thing and MS's tiny 3:2 insurgency? I thought almost everything had gone 1080p or 4k with nothing between.
  • Teckk - Wednesday, July 24, 2019 - link

Yeah 1080p or 4k. Can't think of anything other than Surface Book at the moment

Huawei Matebook X Pro, out for over a year now. 3:2 ratio (better than Apple) 3000x2000 resolution. Super thin bezels, 13.9" screen in a 13" laptop chassis. Proper keyboard, large trackpad, dedicated graphics...

is there any downsides to buying one in China and using it here? I'm assuming you'll need to format and install an English Windows

You might run into WiFi radio weirdness (e.g. losing a good portion of 5GHz channels) if the radio region cannot be user modified.

I'd hope it uses 802.11d, which will detect suitable frequencies from the base station.

Would be more worried about firmware or other malware from there, to be honest.

Most laptops sold in China comes with Windows 10 Home OEM, which is locked into Simplified Chinese only, and the license does not transfer to other languages.

Could someone elaborate on: "Recent developments of display manufacturing technologies enabled makers of monitors to cost-efficiently produce screens featuring sizes that are different from those primarily used for notebooks today "

I thought the sizes picked were largely factors of "what lets the default sized big sheet of glass/plastic get cut into screens without wastage around the edge"; and that unless you were going for a wierdo resolution that there was a lot of setup work in changing the pixel density to get a normal resolution out.

Yeah, this warrants more research. Used to follow the trade mags for displays, but it's been a few years because most of it was, "This thing which was shown at a trade show, which can't be scaled up, but they say scaling is totally around the corner."

There are several trends when it comes to displays evolution.
First, dimensions. Second, pixel density. Third, cost.
Once the cost of a processed substrate is low enough and its PPI is high enough, you may go on with large/non-standard dimensions. So, yields of panels just got high enough because of refinements of manufacturing technologies and other factors.

Too bad about the lack of more modern ports and higher-res LCD, as this looks quite good otherwise.
I also feel that the discrete graphics is a waste in this category.

It borrows its name from Honor Magic, I wouldn't be surprised if next product they come up with is called Honor Magic Watch.

would have been nice to see a 3750H or something in the 35w mode, would be less complicated that thin setup and could likely perform similarly.

We get it you think it's amazing to put a camera in a key but no one wants the breast and chin angle... Makes it an instant no buy.
