If Apple released more new Mac models, I'm confident they would sell more. Right now only the very recent MacBook Pro and iMac Pro are 'new' with everything else being a year old at least. In particular the state of the Mac Pro is just sad.
  • phillip.hall - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Its a good point on this blog site. But its clear that even as Tim says Macs are an important part of the business, the sales are down 13% year over year and only account for 10% of revenue (and I'd guess an even lower amount of net profit). I don't know if they are just not concerned, if they are allowing the Mac to go the way of the iPod (slow burn into oblivion), or if they really think the iPad is the way forward. I guess only time will tell.

Mac Mini hasn't been updated in 4 years, and honestly, the 6 year old model (2012 edition) is still the only one to consider because a) it's quad core b) has memory expansion slots c) is cheaper

I just don't get Apple sometimes...such an easy SKU to update, and the margins are way higher because it's an a la cart product. People have to spend another $500 on a Apple monitor and another $150 on a wireless keyboard and mouse.
  • prisonerX - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Why would they waste engineering talent on products that hardly make any money relative to iPhones? The fact that they seldom update the Mac line tells you all you need to know about what Apple thinks.
  • smilingcrow - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Given the stagnation that Intel has shown it's hardly a surprise that Apple has slowed the upgrade cycle. Not that some of the designs aren't terribly outdated even taking that into consideration.
  • name99 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

You're all missing the point. Apple is putting the bare minimum into new INTEL Macs because all the real engineering and design talent is going to the ARM Macs. My guess (pure guess) is these are announced at WWDC 2019 to get developers on board, and released to the public a year later; though that schedule could slip by a year.

The issue is not that Apple isn't interested in the market, or thinks it is too small; Apple will own everything that matters in this market soon enough. The issue is that to get to PCs that people want to buy, that are worth replacing what they bought 5 years ago, Apple has to boil the ocean; with not just new CPUs but a whole new architecture. All we are seeing from the outside is the small parts of that (like the T2 stuff) that can be released standalone.

Apple has either released or announced a lot of stuff in the past few years too soon. I think they have learned from this and will NOT be announcing future mac plans up until they know everything is lined up just right.

amazing how many people still buy overpriced mobile phones. look in the streets, they hardly can buy cloths, food etc but still all they want is an iphone and a data package along with it just to be on level "with the people".

Oh I forgot, most of them run with a battery charger very close to them :)
Last Tech conference i did, all charging desks owned by the fruit guys missing juice before end of working day.

Overpriced tech is the worst thing a consumer should buy, yet they all fall for the wannebee.

Written on my OnePLus One with 349$ cost (4 years ago with the same screen size as current apples) running android 8.1 and 2 days on battery :)
  • yeeeeman - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

That is called ignorance, my friend.
  • randomeurope - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Why don't you let people do what they want? If you want to buy Chinese-backed cr*pphone, then you are free to do so :)
  • rocky12345 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

So basically what you are saying that if it's not Apple then it's a crap phone am I getting this right? Sorry to say but those crap phones as you like to put it out number Apples iPhone's like 30 to 1 in the world market so there must be more than enough smart people that do not want to buy into Apples closed ECO system.
  • TEAMSWITCHER - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

I just love the psychology on demonstration here. Anything that you cannot afford has to be something that is constantly deemed as not worth having. I have gone FULL APPLE ECOSYSTEM - iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, and iMac desktop. The level of interoperability between these devices is something that no other Manufacturer can match right now. Granted I am not a gamer, and have maybe only two games in my Steam account. But that's because I'm actually using these devices to make a living. So ... in short .. I think you are all wet, and I know for fact that what I have is working better for me than ANY alternative. SUCK IT!
  • duploxxx - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

what eco system? you mean the lazy, prefabbed old school grandpa items you can do with apple devices? pls give a hint what can't be done on other devices :).
  • duploxxx - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

what level of interoperability? all become slow when you upgrade them! yeah that is a nice feature to have.
  • uhuznaa - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Things like reading and writing texts (SMS and iMessage) on any of your Apple devices you may happen to use at that moment? iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iMac, whatever. How do you do that with other devices?
  • smilingcrow - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

You can do that with Android and Windows 10 and it even supports iOS so not tied to one eco-system:
    https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/19/17479554/androi...

But seriously, you'd have to be a texting addict to move all your devices to a different premium priced platform for one simple feature.
  • baka_toroi - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

@duploxxx: congratulations. You're the kind of imbecile that guarantees Apple's success. I bet you think Android and iOS are equivalent in stability and functionality.

Here's a hint for you: it's called UX. Apple still cares about it. No other company does it as well as them, partly because "great customer service" is an alien concept to Asian companies.
  • rocky12345 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Apple and great customer service should never be in the sentence ever. Yes they are all smiles and there to sell you their stuff but god forbid you ever have to get it fixed. They make you jump through so many hoops and if you miss one of them they have the right to refuse service to their customers. It is right in their agreement all you have to do is read the fine print.

Then again it seems some of the other companies are starting to do this as well just not to the extent Apples has been doing it over the years.

That's the best market for the iPhone: the aging population. There is no doubt iOS is significantly simpler and easier to use so the learning curve is very adaptable. Of course this comes at the cost of functionality and capability but those things are irrelevant to people who only need basic features.

I think the iPhone has always been one of the most well-rounded phones. It excels at nothing (except raw SoC performance) but does everything above average: camera, battery life, easy of use, app store selection, ecosystem integration, features, etc. The only things that it really fails at are obviously price, and durability\repairability, which are just awful. I hate fixing iPhones, partially because they are pretty difficult, but the parts are expensive and Apple has this BS policy of trying to fuck over 3rd party manufacture compatibility. The error 53, battery calibration, and ambient light sensor issues being the obvious recent takeaways. But it goes as far back as MFi certification for charging cables...it's getting ridiculous.

And why the hell haven't they adopted USB-C like the rest of the modern world yet. Even Nintendo has accepted USB-C as the standard charging port (The 3DS actually uses a standard although not well known USB port as well) and they (Nintendo) have historically been the most proprietary console developer.

Tell that to people who buy BMW, Benz, when they could have buy Toyota.
  • prisonerX - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

There are an endless number of Apple lemmings in the world, they just don't know any better, or are willing to pay for the Apple logo.

I just bought a phone for 125 euros, and it has pretty much all the features of flagships from 18 months ago. It's a great, highly function phone by any measure, except perhaps fashion - it has no notch.
  • baka_toroi - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

There's nothing better than Apple and for the record I fucking hate that. Your €125 chinkphone is a piece of crap and I'm basing my assessment on the fact that it's Android based.
  • rocky12345 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

This is a typical Apple fanboy/fangirl type of comment and Apple really likes people like you since it guarantees they will stay in business and make boat loads of money off of you from their over priced stuff. Lets not get into all of the crap they released that had major bugs and flaws and when they are called on it they say things like "You are holding it wrong" or some other dumb ass type statement and almost never admit they made a mistake in the design. Mac book pro comes to mind since it left the factory with what Apple says was some missing code in the firmware and then release what they call a bug fix which is just clearly a patch job on something that will still be prone to over heating but hey that's a feature it will keep you warm in the winter as it throttles itself into mush lower than expected performance levels good thing you did not buy cheap china based products there for sure.

Yeah, right. The world of Samsung's exploding batteries is so much better!

Are you familiar with this industry or was your first OS Windows XP? What you describe is nothing compared to all the shit HP, Dell, Sony and many, many others have done and continue doing.

If you're gonna describe Apple's shittiness you better use a frame of reference. Otherwise you end up saying retarded shit like you did.

There are endless number of Lemmings in the world.

I have just chosen LG G7 ThinQ as my work phone. It matches Galaxy S9+ quite well, spec to spec - a bit below for some, a bit better for some other specs... for 2/3 of a price in local shops.

Price wasn't even the factor - I had budget approved for either. I have been using LG products at home and, in general, are happier with the brand, compared to Samsung products I have encountered. And yet, Samsung sells more phones than anyone else in the world. Even if they are overpriced compared to direct Android competitors.

With that said, I am considering iPhone as my personal phone replacement (currently Lumia 950XL). Even if I live in Windows world. Android and Outlook.com are still not playing nice - various issues with syncing contacts and calendar... and I cannot make my Android send SMS and other notifications to my BT hands-free. Aging Win phone not only plays all notifications over BT speakerphone, but is also clever enough to activate Cortana when on BT, and informs me who the SMS is from, and would I like to hear it.

It might be that I am failing to figure out how to achieve the same on Android, but for the time I have invested looking for option, I haven't found any...?
  • Samus - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

In a free market, people can buy whatever they want, however they want. It isn't like the government is subsidizing iPhones for "lifeline" programs or something. People are spending their own money on this stuff. And in a lot of cases people want an iPhone because it holds resale value longer than any Android phone (because of the support cycle and the perception of 'quality') and there is no debate everyone these days practically needs a modern smartphone. We live off of them. Decent cellular connectivity, camera, and battery performance are essential.

Except from the Apple tax and the Mac OS, there is nothing outstanding in owning a Mac book.
  • prime2515103 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Looks like they might have to wait until around Q4 '19 to break the trillion dollar value mark. But then, the valuation might not be entirely based on net income, I'm not a business major.
  • prime2515103 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Wait, that's not right... They went from being valued at $750B to $935B in less than a year, so I would guess they'll break a trillion by year's end or Q1 '19.

Investing 101: Stock prices can go down as well as up.
With the current trade-war who knows how that will impact the economy. Plus with Ronald McDonald in the big White Twitter House anything goes.
  • alphasquadron - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

All my professional friends all own an iphone. Probably because the price is not that big of a deal to them. And it's probably easier for them to use than an Android. They also own a nice car like a Mercedes/BMW. But I'm sure the readers here find anyone driving a bmw or mercedes are just dumb as hell. Just like those CEOs that own fancy cars or a jetliner. Those guys are so dumb unlike us Android users. How could they waste so much money on stuff like a Lamborghini. Right guys?
  • baka_toroi - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

Most people here are socially retarded and don't have the ability to understand why non technical users flock to iOS.
  • rocky12345 - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 - link

I find it flawed that anyone would put Apple into the same group as the group of things like Lambo's jetliners etc etc etc they are not a premium product like those in that kind of group but Apple would like to try and tell everyone they are which is a out right lie. Smart people buy products that will be of the most use to them for their daily needs dumb people are the ones that buy crap just to show off what they have and it does not matter to them if the product is actually good or not as long as it ups their status rating.

It is really sad that there are so many people that actually think having a Apple phone or Apple PC yep it's a PC just like any other PC (Personal Computer) but Apple would like to to believe they inject magic happy juice into their products that makes them like nothing else on the planet.

News flash their products are made form the same parts that everybody else use inside any given device. I also find it very funny that if the MAC OS is so special and so powerful why does at least 75% of the MAC user flock to install Windows OS on their shiny new MACS & then they go out of their way to promote how good the OSX is and how bad Windows is but secretly they are enjoying that Windows install to it's max if Windows is so bad then do not have it on your MAC use the provided OS Apple likes to slap on their systems that is still based on code form the 90's

A trillion dollar worth of dumb 🤔

People made fun of Apple raising prices on their phones with IPhone 8/X but look who’s laughing now 🤣
