What's going on with the portable card format? We have UFS that has never seen any widespread use in the card format due to lack of controllers/slots but marketed as a replacement for SD cards. Meanwhile a new SD standard using PCIe in some fashion has just been announced.

Can we settle on the best solution for once instead of these seemingly competing standards with trade-offs.

About damn time. I want SD cards to have some much needed competition. I hope laptops start shipping with combo SD/UFS card reader slots.

The cards look pretty much identical. The pins are positioned around the middle with UFS, so an universal card reader would require additional pins to support both cards. There doesn't seem to be any obstacle to have both standards on the market now. I'm surprised they didn't use NVMe with UFS but SCSI logic designing UFS.
