"The Thunderbolt part has no daisy chaining capabilities (there is only one Thunderbolt port). "
    ha ha.

Every damn time a description of TB comes up, you get the crowd saying how awesome it is because of daisy-chaining. And every time I say, no, that's a stupid stupid claim because what will immediately happen is device manufacturers will try to save a buck by not including that second port. And these kids will say "go away grandpa with your stupid history and your experience of seeing the exact same thing happen with SCSI, then with FireWire --- none of that is relevant to the perfection of TB".

I have mixed feelings about TB. On the one hand, great performance and conceptually great idea.
On the other hand, engineers who insist on designing a daisy-chaining system rather than a hub-based system after 30 years of experience are too damn stupid to be allowed to continue, so they deserve to have their life's work fade into obsolescence before their eyes.
You had your chance, guys, and you blew it for the stupidest, most obvious reason in the book.

Yeah, for an external HDD like this, TB offers no compelling advantage over USB 3.0 EXCEPT daisy chaining.

Even the benchmarks show USB 3.0 edging out TB.

I'm trying to get an 8TB external and they're sold out here, lead time is 1-2 months. It's a shame that these have completely ridiculous prices and more points of potential failure.

For anyone interested, SMART attribute 16 is the helium level.

The article mentions that Apple users are the main target market for G-Technology. There's a whole range of Macs that gained TB connectivity before the introduction of USB 3, so despite the single TB port limitation there's a usage case for this drive configuration. But yes, two TB ports on this drive enclosure would nonetheless have been nice.

One point that the article should have emphasized is that because these G-Tech enclosures are fanless, they're essentially silent. That's a big plus, especially if several are in use. It's one of the reasons I have several of them (the older, non-TB version) at the office.
