The use of a false FoV for Hololens demonstrations still irritates me. It's difficult enough explaining the current state of VR and AR optics without outright false public demonstrations muddying the water.
Personally, I prefer it to the alternative, which would be to show it from the perspective of the wearer, which would fail to capture what Hololens is doing with the rest of the room, Pi robots, physical accessories, etc. while you're looking only at one particular AR target. The main takeaway is that the only way to really know what any AR/VR headset is like is to actually use it.
Culling the external synthesised camera view to the view frustrum of the Hololens wearer would both show how the 'holograms' are embedded in the environment AND how much of them the wearer can actually see.
Wow, all 3 phones sound awesome. My primary issue is the same as always...will these start getting monthly security updates from *MICROSOFT*, not the phone company?
If so, I can tooooooooootally see replacing my mom's Surface 1 at some point with a Windows Phone...I mean she already uses a Windows Phone, but one of these you can plug in and actually use as a (presumably limited) PC! I wonder why they didn't upgrade the Surface 1 and 2 though to Windows 10 mobile or whatever...
Is their Insider program still going? If so, you can sign up, download the app and it side-steps the carriers as far as updates are concerned. That worked wonderfully to get my old 928 out from under the thumb of Verizon.
Get the Insider app and you can always get the latest updates directly from Microsoft, you can just wait for RTM release software and opt out during beta testing according to your choice.
Agreed the name sucks. Apple has owned to "BooK" branding for decades. At worst, this name will create confusion, and best that Microsoft is chasing the venerable (and due for a nice refresh RSN) MacBook Pro.
I like it fine. It's obviously a takeoff on the Macbook, and kind of explains what it is...except apparently it's also still a tablet, which is awesome.
Oh don't be ridiculous. You think Microsoft puts together a hardware package in less than a month based on what Apple did?
The same goes the other way --- when Apple releases hardware that matches what was shown by MS or Samsung or whatever three months ago, that is not Apple "copying" anyone --- it shows that these ideas happen to be in the air.; most likely because technology has hit the point where they are feasible and a low-level vendor has been showing off their capabilities to all the large companies.
If, as they seem to have said, this 13.5 inches 3:2 surface book is lighter than SP3 (when detached) and virtually on par with Ipad pro, this is just amazing.
Wow, I missed the weight. That's crazy. SP3 felt great in the hand, and this is larger and lighter?
Argh, so tempting. My two complaints remain-I want Marvel Unlimited as a Windows 'app' of some sort, and I want the screen to be able to get really dim for reading at night.
Other than that, the SP4 is perfect, and the Book maybe better still.
Whoa...so the Surface Book is a real tablet with attachable keyboard with an Nvidia GPU in the keyboard? At first I thought it was just a notebook, but wow is that more interesting. The Surface line as a whole and the Windows phones that can be used as a PC of sorts are WAY more interesting than anything Apple or Google are doing.
It's like some parallel universe where Microsoft is showcasing more drool worthy hardware than Apple or Google. Would have been nice if my 128GB Nexus 6P on order supported USB 3...
Microsoft has done a great job this time... what a pity however that they didn't go with USB 3.1, that would have been ideal to make these devices future proof... A 16GB RAM and 1TB PCIe SSD will last a while, especially with an I7 that is 2x faster that the fastest MBP 13... But a great device nonetheless this surface book...
The SP3 does have micro sd card support. It won't store apps there but sees it for anything else. Or are you referring to a general any size SD card reader?
I was referring to the full sized SD card, many of my cameras use full sized sd card and only software that I intend to use on the go is the Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop elements(apart from web browser for mails and other stuff). For these applications M$ Surface pro is a perfect sized device.
watching these announcement make sense and now all the SW design and HW equipments goes in the same direction. I just miss apps developers to add now new apps to have a store giving envy to come&serve yourself.
Gaming: The Surface Pro will be useless for most games. An m3 or m4 can't drive 2736 x 1824 at a decent fps. If you're happy with iOS games (I'm not), the iPad Pro will have a big advantage here.
Now the GPU in the Surface Book is another thing entirely. Here hoping.
"UPDATE: Just got official word from NVIDIA on the GPU, but unfortunately it doesn't tell us much.
The new GPU is a Maxwell based GPU with GDDR5 memory. It was designed to deliver the best performance in ultra-thin form factors such as the Surface Book keyboard dock. Given its unique implementation and design in the keyboard module, it cannot be compared to a traditional 900M series GPU. Contact Microsoft for performance information."

No mention of the battery life for SP4?!?!Don't really care that it is thinner. Nice that it is updated with Skylake (which was obvious). I just hope they improved battery life.
