Will the live stream be watchable from mobile?
Thinking of either YouTube or G+ applications.
  • Yofa - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

i think they mentioned it was powered by hangouts on air.
  • speconomist - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Missed it, any idea about how Hangouts on Air works on mobile, guess next time.
  • Dman23 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

YouTube is fine and all but it would be soooo much better if you posted your Mobile Show as a Video Podcast on iTunes (or at least post a podcast feed, at the very least). That's how I, and I'm sure millions of others consume these "webcast video" shows.

    Working guys
  • Wade_Jensen - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

    And your back.
  • dylan522p - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Hope you guys archive this because I can't currently watch.

+1. I'm at work at the moment but I'd love to watch this after I'm off.

Lost the feed during the Cyclone discussion unfortunately. Really enjoyed up till that point though
  • willis936 - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

I'm watching right now over dinner. I'm not an avid G+ user but I have to say the YouTube livestream integration is nice. Not many competing services. It's a little thing like zoe that's cute but functional.

Also I like this format. Video on livestream YouTube for podcasts at night is perfect for sitting down on a couch and watching it on tv.
  • cryptech - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Lost it at nVidia thinks their brand carries a premium. :D
  • dylan522p - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

It sorta does in tablets and up but not in phones.
  • nevertell - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Don't know about the Android java runtime much, but on desktop side going from 32 bit jre to 64bit jre increases NetBeans memory footprint a ridiculous amount. Whilst Android devices generally have more ram, won't they need even more if they decide to go 64bit ?
  • tipoo - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Most of it is actually going unused right now. Any respectable middle-high range Android phone has 2GB now, and moving to 3, and Android 4.4 trims things back to work well on 512MB devices and most apps don't even saturate that full 2GB so it leaves room for a lot of multitasking and keeping old apps in memory.

I expect 64 bit phones will take the chance to go to 4GB if only for marketing though. That should alleviate any concerns about 64 bit using more. And yes, 64 bit iPad Air apps did use 25-30% more RAM.
  • teiglin - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Yeah it's not at all clear to me why Samsung has started shipping 3GB in its latest Notes and whatnot. I did find last year that moving from 1GB to 2GB devices produced a very positive effect on the lifetime of browser tabs, to the point that where I rarely had them reload them mid-browsing session even after a handful of background tabs (say, a half dozen--I don't do the same sort of heavy multi-browsing on my phones that I do on my laptop or desktop, for obvious reasons).

I don't know if there will be games or other apps in the near future that are really able to take advantage of a full 2GB (or more), but until mobile OSes have the sort of leeway to swap to disk rather than have to simply kill running apps, more RAM will continue to be extremely welcome.
  • tipoo - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Yay, talking head videos! I do like this format better than audio-only.
  • willis936 - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

When can we expect airline chair, beverage, and internet reviews?
  • Nerdy Geek - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Brian, in you review of the Nexus 5 can you test if the Nexus 5 has Apt-X compatibility
  • Nerdy Geek - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

    forgive my spelling
  • Wade_Jensen - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

You can get Google play edition in north american markets, but not in many other countries. Still a big deal for a lot of people.
  • daos - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

    why no 1080?
  • ThortonBe - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

I just missed watching it live, so I can't comment much on that, but I really like the video format. I'm not sure how much of a pain it would be to do, but having a downloadable version of the video would be nice to if possible.
  • speconomist - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

    Two words:
    Tube Mate
  • tential - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Maybe I'm in the minority here so others chime I am but please please please, can we get stuff written first?
This YouTube era has made finding things impossible on the Internet without skimming through a video somehow.
I only care about maybe 50% of the things in the video, but now would have to watch or seek through the YouTube video (which can be used finicky) rather than just click the pages of the article I want to read.
This becoming a norm would be a real downer for me if it doesn't come in a written form which is generally what happens on a lot of sites.
Especially when I'm browsing on my phone like I am now and don't want to watch a video because it's just that much harder to skip around a video on your phone.
  • tential - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

Especially at over 2 hours long. I mean, I like anandtech, but between all of the TV/other things I there to watch online, 2 hours is a huge time commitment.
While I find everything that is in this video interesting, there just is no way I'll sit there for 2 hours, when I could read something instead and have my reading pace dictate how long I sit there rather than your speaking pace.
Just my 2 (or 4 cents), but well, the masses decide so I won't be surprised if this is just another thing that youtube has absorbed. Just sucks though but it is what it is I guess.
  • evonitzer - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

I don't quite get this comment. It will appear in written form soon enough, so why do you *have* to scrub through the video so intently?

I would like to see an audio only version though. I like seeing you guys and Brian lifting the phones up is nice, but I like audio podcasts more than video, generally. Here someone is going to tell me to use some website to do it for me, but I'm just asking Anand for a direct download.
  • dylan522p - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

I really really enjoy the fact that we can see y'alls faces when you talk. It helps me understand exactly what you're saying and absorb it rather than having to backtrack 30 seconds in podcasts atleast 3-4 times. I hope this format becomes more popular with you guys and maybe bring on more of the writers like Ian and vivek and jarred.
  • blenderben - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

any chance you guys will do a full on review of the top end haswell macbook pro? similar to the review earlier in the year?
  • augustofretes - Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - link

I would really appreciate an audio-only version :)
  • MrMaestro - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Me too. I typically listen to the podcasts while driving.
  • speconomist - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

In the meantime you can open the YouTube video with TubeMate and choose to save as *.mp3
  • augustofretes - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

I'm fully aware I can do that. However, I use pocketcasts which downloads new podcasts automatically, as I mostly hear them while in the subway, and I don't have a fast data connection down there to download or stream anything reliably.
  • augustofretes - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

I already watched this one though. But for future podcasts (especially this long) an audio only version that I get automatically on my phone would be marvellous.
  • MarcSP - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Totally agree, I don't think that seeing 2 talking heads adds anything (no ofense, Anand and Brian :-)). If they were often showing hardware or at least showing images or graphs... but they barely did it.

Hint to improve the mobile show:
    1) Record it normally
    2) Transcript everything. Securely delete the original recording.
    3) Use two supermodels in a bikini to read it with a teleprompter.
    4) Profit? :-P

  • Mullins - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Here's a 32kbps m4a version for you and anybody else who wants this on their audio player.

  • psyside1 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Useless, since Youtube compress it to 192kb/s AAC.
  • BPM - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

I hoped you would post a mp3 version of it as well.for people who don't have jigh speed, unlimited access. Wouldn't hurt!!
  • Mullins - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Converted it for everybody to download. Got it to 30 MB. Should be an easy download, even over 3G.

  • SeannyB - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

For these video shows, you should play to the strengths of the format and use them to discuss hardware in a hands-on way for half an hour. A feature-length recording of two talking heads is a little daunting. I'm already downloading an audio recording via TubeMate and that's probably how I'll listen to most of this show-- as a podcast during my work commute.
  • teiglin - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

That sounds like a lot of work for them. While it'd be great if they had shorter, video-relevant segments alongside the longer audio-only podcasts, I'm okay with listening to these as podcasts--for the moment at least, it seems they're largely treating them as such anyway too.
  • wrkingclass_hero - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

In the future can you save the audio as a downloadable podcast? I love to listen to you guys on the go.
  • JensWeissflog - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

I second that. Although it's not the hardest trick ever to download audio from a youtube video, an audio versio to the podcast feed directly would be welcome.
  • psyside1 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

They should split the video, in parts, like Erica Griffin does.
  • maxpower47 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

+1 on audio only version in your podcast feed. I can't watch videos in the car.
  • mybook4 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

You guys might want to talk to Chris Fisher over at JupiterBroadcasting.com. He runs a podcasting network. His videos have a ton of great effects.
  • Communism - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Yell at Intel and Microsoft to get us a 5-6 inch phablet that runs Windows 8.1 on a baytrail that also functions as a phone :O.

Command & Conquer (or any RTS or Turn Based Strategy) would definitely be the killer app for such a device. And real Microsoft Office of course.

Put 8 gigs of ram in it and I'd get one on launch day.

Having a phone that can run everything except DOS (which you can emulate) is just the holy grail of mobile computing.
  • Laxaa - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

So no thoughts on the Nokia-stuff whatsoever?
  • evonitzer - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Oh yeah, I would have liked to hear a bit. It doesn't sound like Anandtech was sampled (or even interested in getting them) but I would still like to hear their reaction to the announcements.

A question I have (that I might have to post for a future podcast) is why tablets with cellular connectivity have the phone aspect stripped out. The Nexus 7 would be a very cheap phone that I would probably buy and use as a phone. It also would be great for my grandmother who wants a phone for basic texting and photo viewing, as well as some random phone calls. Giving the standard excuse that you will look stupid using it to make calls is not a reason at all (headsets, texting, and who gives a shit what I look like). Why do oems remove the capability? Is it an FCC verification thing? Or a carrier problem?

The Asus Fonepad is kinda the only one around, which Brian found a little silly but usable. Why aren't there more?
  • speconomist - Thursday, November 7, 2013 - link

Good question in the second paragraph about mini tablets and cellular connectivity, hope that someone can shed some light there.
  • tipoo - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

The Nexus 5 does have a heat spreader/emi shield directly touching the SoC unlike the Nexus 4, and that little change helped modified Nexus 4s throttle much less. Every phone still does throttle, iPhone included, but hopefully that change will be enough to make it reasonable.
  • chrone - Saturday, November 9, 2013 - link

Whoa, where did get that info. Nice to know it won't throttle a lot like n4. :-)
  • nicolapeluchetti - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Will this content be available in written form?I don't like watching videos as i'm much faster at reading that at watching :)
  • amrkal - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 - link

Please post this in the podcast feed.
  • smwinn7 - Thursday, November 7, 2013 - link

    +1
  • Krysto - Thursday, November 7, 2013 - link

Should've called this one the "Anandtech Intel Show" - because that's what half of the podcast is about, despite what the content index might lead you to believe.
  • Pfffman - Thursday, November 7, 2013 - link

So some people have nicely put up mp3s for the podcast. While I would prefer to have it on mp3, using the methods that people have provided here seems to circumvent the video getting views which would eat into showing potential sponsors from supporting this? Unless someone from Anandtech says go ahead and get it, I unfortunately won't download it.

So request: Anand could you please release an MP3 for this one or let us know how this sponsorship is working so we can continue to support the podcast in the best possible way?
  • Tanclearas - Saturday, November 9, 2013 - link

There was no reason for this to be done as a video. I use Doggcatcher for podcasts and listen to them while working out, driving, or walking to work. If I don't make it all the way through (a 2 hour 20 minute show), I can leave the app and come back later and just resume from where I left off.

I'm sure someone will chime in to give me some advice about how to "fix the problem". I know what options I have, but there was absolutely no reason for this to be posted this way and not to the podcast rss feed.
  • Streamlined - Sunday, November 10, 2013 - link

Loved the show. I intended only to listen to about 15 minutes while I worked but you kept going from one interesting subject after another. Bam, Bam, bam. Before I knew it, I heard the whole show. I thought the show was better without audience participation. If you must, I'd suggest getting a third person to filter viewer comments and only feed you the worthy ones.
  • poontab - Monday, November 11, 2013 - link

Really like these but could you post the audio on your podcast feed as well? It would make it much more accessible for me.
  • davidrd85 - Monday, November 11, 2013 - link

Great show guys but I really prefer the audio podcast from the podcast feed that automatically gets pulled down to my iPhone when I'm on the go.
    Keep up the good work
