  That's a direct contradiction in 2 sentences.
  
  Other vendors would have to adopt the proprietary connector Sandisk created. Which means royalties for Sandisk.

  'Custom' doesn't necessarily mean proprietary. 'Custom' here refers to the fact that this connector has not been used by any other vendor before.
  
  I specifically asked this question, and WD responded that they are making this connector layout freely available to any interested party.
