The ban is selectively enforced by granting licences to US companies that Huawei can live without or that would suffer to much from losing Huawei business. Such companies include Microsoft, Micron, AMD and Qualcomm probably (the latest Huawei phones still have some qualcom ICs in them). Google would probably be on this list too (they applied for a license) but the purpose of the ban was to cripple Huawei and that google banning is the strongest method for that.
There is no concept of free market 8n China, free market require protecting intellectual property. China is all about ripping off existing products, industrial secret theft, all sponsored and encouraged by the communist party.
You just contradicted your self, a free market needs protecting by IP laws? The Chinese and US do it differently, the Chinese method does a better job of promoting free markets. The US method of IP law. enforcement restricts free markets and needs a large government to police, adding friction and enforcing uncompetitive behaviour.
@sonny73n : I think you mean Fox "not really" News. CNN at least tries to to get some facts correct. Though Fox is more fun, knowing that they are on par with The Onion; and people think it's a real news network, not just a scam to mess with people.
Nobody would believe your BS anymore. You’re helping your mafia government to slander competitors in order to eliminate competitions and kill free market. You’ve reached new low. How can you keep on living as a subhuman?
@sharath.naik: Replace China with USA and communist with crippled democracy / kleptocracy and your statement still fits.
There is no true free market in the world. Every country has rules to help themselves and protect those who give them money. US companies steal as well (just less obviously) and key industries are funded (in full or in part) directly and indirectly by government funds.
The "developed" world's patent & IP rules are a joke (hey Apple I'm looking at you) that either gets bent by money or abused by people who don't want to loose money. In theory it should be for the good of the citizens of the country and to help encourage R&D, not to abuse management bonuses and to stifle competition.
China is just more obvious about their abuse, since they plan things out instead of going by quarterly profit announcements. They know what to hide and what will blow over in 4/8 years.
"Free market" is an oxymoron. Markets are competitive, and tend towards monopolization if left unregulated (what's the best way of ensuring your survival if you're a leading company in a market? Buying out the competition or forcing them into bankruptcy.). Thus free-as-in-leave-me-alone markets are an illusion and become unfree as soon as someone gains enough power to exert in on others. (And don't come dragging that "market disruption" nonsense - we all know that doesn't work.) The closest one can come to a "free" (as in: fair and equal opportunity) market is a strictly regulated one.
But ultimately, all market economics are based on the absurd idea that infinite growth is possible, and are based on a spiralling system of credits and debts. After all, debts have interest, so you need to bring in more money than you have borrowed. Where does that money come from? Other people's debts! So they need to do the same. If it worked it would be an oroborous, but this is just a spiral consisting of ever increasing debts and ever more precarious lives, where everyone but the super-rich lose in the end. This is not a system that is built to exist long term, and dramatic crashes are a fundamental part of it that cannot be avoided or even effectively alleviated.
The whole story is to prevent Huawei to become the next Apple+Samsung combined. Huawei is not considered, yet, a threat in the laptop market to US companies. A Huawei that could threaten Dell and HP, wouldn't be able to buy even a first gen i7 or an AMD Bulldozer CPU, not Renoir and latest gen Intel CPUs.
I don't want to complain too much about an inexpensive laptop, but that 16:9 LCD with the massive bezel underneath is just awful. The location of the webcam is a disaster. Lastly, 2020 is not the time to release a laptop with a bunch of USB-A ports...
The bezel at the bottom is there so that the screen is not too low; also see the many complaints on the new Dell XPS 13 16:10 screen that got rid of that underneath bezel. And I use many USB-A devices in 2020. I agree with your opinion on the webcam location.
Dongles? Why, bother when I can plug my USB A drive straight in?
Like folks that say these ultra slim laptops with like one port that are great cos you can plug them into these Thunderbolt dockers to get all the ports you need at your desk. Thing is back in the day you could plug a laptop into a docker and have the ports. Then if you unplugged it...the laptop still had most of those ports. Is this really going forward?
Type A ports need to go away. When there is no type A ports for you to connect your peripherals to you'll either need to purchase a dongle or new peripherals.
For now, I won't buy a laptop which is all type C. I'm not relying on dingles to be able to read USB sticks people give me and I'm also not a fan of using a laptop atop my lap with a dongle dingle dangling from a wire, asking for a passing person to catch it / exerting excessive stress on the port as the angle of the dangle changes repeatedly. The idea of a standard is that anyone can use it. Having to remember your dongle, or being screwed having lost it, completely negates the advantages of a standard that everyone uses. USB C doesn't need to force itself on everyone by removing USB A ports. It needs to become part of a slow transition determined by necessity / superiority / price. I am not buying a load of new USB sticks for no good reason except someone changed the standard and wants prettier laptops.
Personally, I prefer a mix. One or two USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 for multi-role use with the right cables, and a bunch of USB-A for 95% of the things one needs USB for in the first place.
A laptop is something most people keep for 3, 5, maybe 7 years, so it should have the ports you'll need down the road rather than obsolete ones that are being phased out. USB-C also optionally includes Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, HDMI, charging, 20 Gbit/s data rate, same connector as USB4, etc., none of which are possible with USB-A.
couldn't agree more, i'm stuck on a 2013 laptop and I want an upgrade but don't want to lose my ports, only option right now is the VAIO, this is so close to perfection I may just get it anyway.
Wow. How do you use your laptop? Without the "massive" bezel at the bottom the screen would be even lower than it already is and you'd have to look down even more. And "a bunch of USB A ports"? Thank god for that. I have a Portege with 3 ports and have to travel with a hub. I have two mobile phones, a Logitech dongle nearly permanently plugged in. Wireless headset also need charging, USB memory key and a YubiKey for security. Man, there's never enough USB A ports in a laptop.
The “massive” bezel underneath is perfect. Sometime I lay down on the sofa and watch YouTube while the laptop still on the desk. Nobody should let you design anything, ever.
Nobody should let you do PR for a communist nation with a history of human rights abuses, and yet here we are. Not everyone does the job they are most suited for.
Do you have any numbers for the display's color accuracy? It looks terrible in the example, but it's hard to compare to others without numbers. Is it worse than the Swift 3, for example? It's nice to know that it can be calibrated, but I can't imagine many people looking for a budget laptop have color calibration hardware.
Weak battery life and poor budget screen. Not a very enticing deal when you can get the Acer Swift 3with better performance, battery life and the same grade of screen. 1 year too late on this model, I'ma fraid
Chiclet keyboards show up in the 70s and early 80s. Commodore PET, TI 99/4 and CC40, IBM PC Jr, Sinclair Spectrum to name a few. They didn't last because they were largely reviled and people wouldn't buy a system without a full-travel keyboard. Now they are a major feature because they make things thinner and more sci-fi-looking. Go figure.
The Cinebench R20 MT graphic for the Ryzen 9 4900HS is wrong, its score must be in the order of +3000 points, +50% ... Someone already criticized this score in the review of the Acer Notebook with this CPU.
Products like this should not exist, this is a burden copy and paste from a Macbook, even the name, this is outrageous, where are the international copyright laws when it is needed? I always have had Anandtech in high regard, a review like this, giving press time to its audience in the free world to this peace of plagiarism makes me wonder, uhmm it makes me wonder...
You can't copyright a generic design such as the Macbook design. It is iconic, yes, but not copyright-able. Stop spewing meaningless words such as "international copyright laws" when you have no idea how they work or what stuff can it be applied to
Good products like this should not exist for you. You’re screaming hysterically about some design that might looks like one of your company products. Are you sure this laptop is exactly identical to the macbook? You’re screaming outrageous, wtf? You’re lame. Everyone knows China invented money and you’re using it in your daily live. You should wonder if you need more meds.
Do you want to know if your god apple ever steal designs from the Chinese? Check Wikipedia or gsmarena for Chinese phones that released months before the iPhones that had the same designs.
Maide in China is so expensive! You go there knowing that the dictatorship will take your IP and you won’t be able to do anything at all, this is so unacceptable!
Um, yes, the US is different. I know it's fashionable among European and American elites to view the Chinese political system as superior to the American system, but funny none of those elites are emigrating to China.
Really weird how much utterly irrelevant and off-base anti-China spam ended up in these comments. There's plenty to criticise about the Chinese government, but this is just ill-informed trash talk.
It's sad to see Anadtech writing fake review because of fat marketing money. There is no magic in this subpar laptop. 1. Bad keyboard design without PgUp PgDn Home End keys 2. Outdated CPU 3. So so battery life
Page up and down you could argue unless you're pretty much anyone who codes or uses spreadsheets or word documents (heck, I even used it on this page to scroll down to these comments). Home and end key you can't, jumping from beginning to end of line is pretty common usage, also allowing you to get back to the top in office documents.
The majority of users use the scroll wheel. In my experience it's basically just coders who use these functions, and most of them are capable of remapping keys to account for the loss.
You seem to have missed the part where these deficiencies are assessed against the cost. If you can't afford anything more expensive, then this is a good result for the money.
IMO, you can't heap praise on the design of a laptop that has so many design cues copied from the MacBook Air. It may be "legal" to copy, but it is completely lacking in integrity on the part of Honor. It was mentioned in the article that the chiclet design was copied, but that doesn't even matter. They copied the font on the keys and the shape of the keys, like the arrow keys. It would not surprise me if the cutout on the keyboard housing to lift up the display was a millimeter copy of the MacBook Air. Even internally, it looks very similar.
It would be more accurate to say that it looks like a generic clone of a MacBook with some added touches, not that it has a notably good design.
Really? We are talking about laptops. Many laptops will share common design choices. What's next? Are we going to call a copy, every laptop that comes with a screen, a keyboard and a touchpad, because, well there where thousands of other models before, also combining a screen, a keyboard and a touchpad?
The Macbook Air took a bunch of design cues from earlier Sony and Toshiba ultraportables, including the chiclet keyboard. How far do we want to go back?
These trailer trashes think they invented everything. They ignore history and claim it’s all theirs as soon as a company in their country put it on a product. They don’t care the facts that many inventors working in their country are nationals that’s not the same as theirs. They claim it all whether it was stolen, robbed, bought, scammed... from others. They’re the exceptionals who has successfully fooled themselves.
This with Renoir, 4700U or 4800U (or both as options) will be the ultimate one to look for. Especially if they could add upgradable RAM to it (like 8GB or 16GB embedded and a single SODIMM).
Not really. The flash on SSDs suffers more from cold than it does from heat, and it's extremely unlikely that a device like this will be put to such a use that the SSD controller would begin to throttle.
I would like to know if the type of charging this laptop uses is compatible with the USB Power Delivery standard, and what capacity it uses then.
It is 2020, and today there is no way that I am going to buy any device that does not follow the standard. I don't want to carry five different chargers on the road.
“The keyboard is an attempt to copy Apple’s chiclet design.”
Even Anandtech believed the lie when it repeated enough of times.
Sorry to burst your bubbles. The chiclet keyboard was designed by Sony on the Vaios. Check products release dates on Google, you’ll be surprised how much Apple stole from others, not the other way around. Keep gobbling that BS from MSM.

It's sad to see Anadtech writing fake review because of fat marketing money. There is no magic in this subpar laptop.1. Bad keyboard design without PgUp PgDn Home End keys
2. Outdated CPU
3. So so battery life

Wow like 99% of computer users in the 21st century..I never use those keys.Or Scroll Lock/Pause/Break/PrtScr and most of the F keys. The C64 had it right with about only 4 of them.

Page up and down you could argue unless you're pretty much anyone who codes or uses spreadsheets or word documents (heck, I even used it on this page to scroll down to these comments).Home and end key you can't, jumping from beginning to end of line is pretty common usage, also allowing you to get back to the top in office documents.

Never use em!Spunjji - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link
The majority of users use the scroll wheel. In my experience it's basically just coders who use these functions, and most of them are capable of remapping keys to account for the loss.Spunjji - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link
You seem to have missed the part where these deficiencies are assessed against the cost. If you can't afford anything more expensive, then this is a good result for the money.pjc15 - Saturday, May 16, 2020 - link

Are we going to call a copy, every laptop that comes with a screen, a keyboard and a touchpad, because, well there where thousands of other models before, also combining a screen, a keyboard and a touchpad?jabber - Sunday, May 17, 2020 - link
Yeah it's like car design. Most are generic. It's only the grille and badge that separate them.bigboxes - Sunday, May 17, 2020 - link
And why does this bother you?Spunjji - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link
The Macbook Air took a bunch of design cues from earlier Sony and Toshiba ultraportables, including the chiclet keyboard. How far do we want to go back?sonny73n - Sunday, May 24, 2020 - link
They’re the exceptionals who has successfully fooled themselves.Xajel - Sunday, May 17, 2020 - link
This with Renoir, 4700U or 4800U (or both as options) will be the ultimate one to look for. Especially if they could add upgradable RAM to it (like 8GB or 16GB embedded and a single SODIMM).deil - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link
this is bad config. ssd is very close to heat source, and will get hot without use. it will shorten the lifespan a lot.Spunjji - Monday, May 18, 2020 - link
Not really. The flash on SSDs suffers more from cold than it does from heat, and it's extremely unlikely that a device like this will be put to such a use that the SSD controller would begin to throttle.Findecanor - Tuesday, May 19, 2020 - link
I would like to know if the type of charging this laptop uses is compatible with the USB Power Delivery standard, and what capacity it uses then.It is 2020, and today there is no way that I am going to buy any device that does not follow the standard. I don't want to carry five different chargers on the road.

“The keyboard is an attempt to copy Apple’s chiclet design.”Even Anandtech believed the lie when it repeated enough of times.
Sorry to burst your bubbles. The chiclet keyboard was designed by Sony on the Vaios. Check products release dates on Google, you’ll be surprised how much Apple stole from others, not the other way around. Keep gobbling that BS from MSM.
