So this is a "5GHz chip" without Intel actually announcing individual per-core turbo levels? Technically one single core could run at 5GHz at any time but we're touting it as a 5GHz chip?
Because Intel would never try to mislead... Wondering how much egg can fit on a single face :).
Where do you see the i7 8700K for $299? I see the i7 8700 for $299 but the cheapest i7 8700K is $347 so round to $350 so it should be $17,813,450 - $17,500,000 = $313,450.
Exactly. If people really go crazy for this special, limited edition, the best thing might be to leave it in the sealed box and resell it a a premium, just like some action figures. As an aside, siliconlottery.com has an interesting statement about 8700K chips: "As of 6/08/18, the top 86% of tested 8700Ks were able to hit 5.0GHz or greater." Sounds like Intel didn't have to really do that much hard work to get enough 5 GHz single core chips.
Binning could be a great way for intel to make more money in the future. They already bin the hell out of the mobile "hq" i7s. 6700hq = 3.1ghz 4 core and 7700hq = 3.4ghz 4 core. And thats with around 1.15 volts stock and around 1 volt max undervolt. Those are some poorly bined chips. Please intel give us new ways to pay more / get less. Come on dont you want more money
I got my name in for the draw if I win it (won't Happen) then cool I will build a system around it once they release the z390 chip set no point in the z370 because it will be a dean end platform very soon.
I really wish they could have worked in the 4.77GHz some how since the 8086 ran at 4.77MHz that would have made it a really cool limited edition chip then.
Why is z370 a deadend platform?(at least more then any other Intel socket?) And z390 is literally just z370 with wifi+by built into the chipset, same socket, same compatibility, same everything other then the built in wifi+bt, it's just as dead end as z370, sorry not raging on you just trying to understand what your mean, well have coffeelake and it looks like one more gen then it's a new socket, same as it's always been for intel
"Intel’s original 5GHz chip, the Coffee Lake-based Core i7-8086K"
It's not actually a 5GHz chip if it only does it on a single core at stock settings. I guess this is how Intel is now doing it though get that single core to much higher than when the rest are all running top speed and sell it as a 4.7GHz or 5GHz product when in fact it is not really. I am going to say it may have been Nvidia that started this with the GPU's but at least with Nvidia if they say 2GHz the GPU actually tries to stay within that boundary if it can. Having a single core run stock at 5Ghz means very little other than inflating IPC scores in Cinebench.
so 8700k is basically a 300 chip as it been on sale more times than I can count for that price (no MC has it for 300 for example). So this is really a $150 premium for 300 MHz which you can easily get by spending that $150 n savings on a beefed up liquid cooler. They wanted to make this a special commemorative release, they should have added something more for 425, perhaps a limited edition intel liquid cooler or a collectors wooden box housing the cpu or a different heatspreader marking their anniversary. Man they could have done it in so many ways. Really disappointed in intel and despite that fact that I have nothing but good things to say about my 8700k ironically overclocked to 5ghz.
they should TiN coat the copper Heatspeader (on the 8086k cpu) .... to make it look gold! you know as in the gold drillbits.. (and as an inside joke... they are “drilling” you for extra cash) TiN = titanium nitride coated...
yeap so can 99% of users with a 8700k. Up to 5.1 is fairly easy to do on a nondelidded chip. anything 5.2 or above i think and you are running into thermal limits unless you delid. I am not even convinced Intel picked up binned chips. I honestly think that they took 50k 8700k chips, clock one core to 5ghz which is probably do-able on any 8700k, and left everything else unchanged - boom there u go limited edition chip, update the cardboard box to show for it and sell for 425 tyvm lol.

50k 8700K at MSRP ==> 50,000 * 350 = 17,500,000It is really selling for 299.99, so
50,000 * 300 = 15,000,000
8086K =>
(50,000 - 8086 ) * 425 = 17,813,450
17,813,450 - 15,000,000 = 2,813,450
So, Intel managed to give away 8086 "pinned" 8700K (AKA 8086K) and still make some money on top of it. win-win situation :D
Cheers!

I'm not sure why you would buy this over a delidded and binned 8700k? silicon lottery has a 5.0ghz stable 8700k for $419.https://siliconlottery.com/products/8700k50g

Single core boost is useless. Intel misleading us againbrucek2 - Monday, June 11, 2018 - link
Disagree. Single core performance is probably precisely why a buyer of this or the base 8700K selected it over AMD's offerings in the first place.Hxx - Friday, June 8, 2018 - link
