If you can characterise the room, you can get decent sound out of compact awkwardly placed speakers. The reason you need ultra-high-quality speakers and amplifiers for good sound is that you drive them in a dumb way: feed them a set of fixed discrete channels and hope to get a flat response through brute force.
Before 10 am on a weekend, when one parent is still asleep, the other parent spends time with the kids downstairs, with the TV on and volume set to 8 or less. That way, it can be heard in the one room only, without disturbing anyone upstairs.
After 11 pm, when one parent and both kids are sleeping, the other parent will watch TV with the volume set to 11 or less, for the same reason.
Neither situation would work using the AV receiver and speakers. To use them would require turning the sub off, and the satellite speakers don't sound any better than the TV speakers at really low volumes. So why waste the power to run the extra speakers if they won't sound any better than just the TV?

Personally I have crap hearing anyway due to many many operations on my eardrums and generally can't tell the difference in sound between systems.On the other hand, I have significantly better than 20/20 vision, and love high quality displays...
