The lack of manual shooting modes or controls will make spending this kind of money on it a hard swallow. I also really don't see the interface working well over WiFi...but hopefully I'm wrong on that.
The pixels on the QX100 are even bigger than HTC One's "ultrapixels". Damn I wish they could fit a 1" sensor in their phones.
I like these lens-cameras, but I hope that now that they have these, they won't slow down the camera innovation in their phones, so they can upsell the accessories more easily.
They are available around $500-550, so yes not exactly cheaper. However there are lots of cheap mirrorless camera out there which has way larger sensor and better IQ than RX100.
You'll probably be able to buy this for less than the $500 as well. Anyhow, this is a directly comparable to a RX100 II which you aren't going to find new for much less than $750. I'm not going to buy it, but to get the optics and processing of a well loved camera for your smartphone for $250 less than the full camera seems like a decent deal.
Your numbers are off. The Sony 1" sensor is a 2.7 crop, so 10.4 is equivalent to 28mm & 37.1mm is equivalent to 100mm...just like the Sony RX100 II...which is what this sensor & lens is from.
I'm seriously interested in this type of modular things, this means I can pair this with a device that have decent display but poor camera for cost reduction, something like the LG Optimus L9 or maybe 5th gen iPod touch?
Someone made a comment regarding the reaction to the new SSS that unlike Kodak, Sony was willing to cannibalize their P&S product line. Kodak 'protected' their film products, ignoring digital at their peril.
One major shortcoming of Sony is it's user interface and it's software. And it looks as if this item is no exception.
It looks like the QX100 has been crippled by dumbing down the RX100 potential e.g. No manual control, shutter priority, raw, full 1080p HD, etc. No doubt all that could be added via firmware/software if Sony were to LISTEN to the sophisticated customers that this product should appeal to, rather than the well-heeled dummy Sony intends. Surely Sony can't believe this would cannibalize their RX100 sales?
Of course Sony might think those well heeled smart phone customers would add an uber expensive 'top of the line' camera simple because it's the best AND it's a Sony. Beware Kodak arrogance!
For this level of product to succeed Sony must quickly learn their original Nex 5 mistake, marketed for the dummy but bought by the 'enthusiast' (formerly called the 'prosumer').
Either Sony un-cripples the QX100 OR, if possible, hackers do. It's highly likely the guts of the QX100 are the same as the RX100ii. So, there's a great opportunity for a super iPhone/iPad app. Sony could even pull an Apple App Store around this class of device! Now that would be REAL innovation. Where's the SDK, Sony? Here's my $99!
If neither happens this innovation could end up in Edsel land!
Please excuse my lack of expertise in this area, but from the looks of it, the QX10 has about the same lens specs as the Nikon Coolpix S800c. So it's basically a "nice" point-and-shoot lens? Is the bigger sensor & low-light capabilities that much better in the QX100, even though its zoom is significantly lower? I'm interested in this concept - both for the mobility of a "good" lens, and the possibility of using it on a small quadcopter ('drone') with a remote viewing screen.
