The biggest news is that it will be on all three carriers. What about T-Mobile? Maybe the competition will allow us to have family plans with voice, data and text at a lower rate than $60 to $80 per smart phone? I guess we'll have to wait until next year for a new generation of phone.
  • xcomvic - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

T-Mobile will NOT be one of the "elite". It's Verizon, Sprint and AT&T
  • xcomvic - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

But yea, I really hope the competition heats up and prices come falling down for the customers...

I guess the extra features are nice, but I'd love to see Apple add a camera button to the side. My wife's $150 Optimus V has one, and it makes it so much easier to take steady photos than the touch screen.

Do I understand right that there's no support for LTE and WiMax? I think that's the one thing people were hoping for. Maybe Apple didn't want the battery life to fall off from the 4.

Lastly, why do I have to log in every time to comment? The "Remember Me" box doesn't work at all, at least not on Google Chrome. Or does it log me out every time I comment from different machines?

Well with iOS5 you can use the volume up button to take photos.
  • rhangman - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

Believe one of the volume buttons works as a camera button now.

You have a market cap of 380 billion and 16 months and you come up with this lame refresh, your dead. The Chinese are going to eat your lunch. I guess it was good while it lasted. Looks like Android will rule. How in the name of god could you come out wit h such a lame product and also do it in San Joser. If i was working at Apple i would be looking for a new job quick before it tanks.

    Doubled data speeds.
An extra core in the Cpu.
    7 times faster GPU.
    More RAM.
A larger 64GB version for those who want.

How is it a small tiny updated? It's a big speed bump that the iPhone didn't need to begin with for anything but looking better on the paper. Does it really need a new design to be a big update?

As for Android, trust me I want it to be great and give iOS a run for it's money, I really do due to the wide variety of nice hardware but currently I can't even find half decent calendar and mail apps for my Galaxy Tab 7 that can even remotely compare to the iOS standard ones. Just that keeps me form switching.

The reason Android is really going anywhere is because of all the free on cheap €10\Month contracts phones.

Apple has nothing to worry about about...

Dude u get everything for free in android
its obvious if u shed money u will get something
    but the question here is
    is apple worth the money
and the answer is a big NO!!!!!
    thats really a lame refresh
You are comparing it with the lame old iphone
Obviously they had to do serious changes

Y dont u compare it wid the competition
    it stands nowhere
    people are excited about siri

actually i'm using such voice commands in windows phone for a year now.... i don't even need to look at a sms and i can send a reply message using voice. nothing new..
    RIP apple

Seems media picks up on apple news more than any other tech related thing. I played with a friends iphone, i did not see anything that separates it from other smart phones.

I don't get it. I don't know many people who care about Iphones in real life to, just a few people i know have one and they just say they got it because someone told them they are good phones. Thats pretty sad, because the people who told them that prob just knows about it from the media. lol

Try reading some comparison reviews sometime.
  • imaheadcase - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

I have...again nothing stands out over other phones. Even side-by-said states don't show the iphone any better, lots of times worse.
  • B3an - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

Try keeping up with the times sometime.

Or try reading a review for the Samsung Galaxy S2, or one of the many other superior Android smartphones that come out this year. The S2 came out in April for most of the world and it's still better than this new iPhone. But sheeple like yourself will still buy this new Apple toy i'm sure.
  • inspire - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

I think using the word "sheeple" automatically disqualifies you from "keeping up with the times".

"The iPhone 4S with Siri will be able to understand natural language requests (e.g. "Wake me up tomorrow at 6AM) and act accordingly (e.g. create an alarm for 6AM tomorrow)."

'Siri, why didn't my alarm go off?'

'Sorry sir, you bought an iPhone'
  • WeaselITB - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

    You forgot to add:

Siri: "And it was Daylight Saving Time change last night. I get so confused sometimes."

Dual-Core CPU refresh, best graphics of any phone, 8MP wide-apereture camers that can go from the home screen to snapping a shot in 1 second, with only 1/2 a second between shots. 1080P video, natural-voice command over several apps, including text messaging, geofencing, and all the other things.

4 drops to $100, 3GS is now free on contract. Sprint gets iPhone. Launches in 100 countries by the end of the year.

As a 1st Gen Palm Pre user who is a month from breaking out of contract, this is gold. My Tri-State commute productivity just shot up 100x. The reason this is big news is because it simply is. Not only in terms of technical specifications, but in terms of business roll-out.

I'm really looking forward to this and all the things it will let me do.

Dual core but probably clocked down to 800Mhz (like the ipad2)....compared to 1.5Ghz on droids

My SG2 take about 1 sec to get to camera, can take 5-10 photos a sec in burst mode...

GPU fastest - is it? Think u'll find an Adreno 225 is quicker...
Android has already had voice control for a couple months...
FindMyFriends already on Android goes by the name of Latitude

4GS downloads at 14Mbps - lots of droids already do 21Mbs..

3.5inch screen really - hard to find an android phone with a screen that small...
  • Donkey2008 - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

Too bad the Android app selection is not up to par with their hardware. It really doesn't make sense to brag about owning a Ferrari when all you have are dirt roads to drive on. Just sayin.
  • B-Unit1701 - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

"Android has already had voice control for a couple months..."

More like a year. Google rolled out voice control for Android last summer.
  • inspire - Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - link

No reason to downclock to 800 MHz.

I've heard 2 seconds to first picture and 1 second between shots on the SG2, and the 4S seems to have decent low-light performance, too.

I don't suppose you saw the Inifinity Blade 2 live demo, but it was impressive. Haven't seen something like that for the Adreno. If Adreno is better, I don't think I'd be able to notice it over the 4S.

Natural voice recognition is a different beast from the normal stuff, and integrating the geofences looks nice.

Personally, I like phones witha smaller form factor, so the screen size isn't a huge turn-off.

Like I said, I've been on webOS for nearly two years. Going into today, I liked the SG2, and I still feel it's a good phone, but for the same money, I'm leaning towards the 4S.

The thought of not bothering to bring my 8 MP Canon to every event that I wear a tie to is nice. Being able to voice control all those core fetaures in natural language is great for when I'm on the road.

It may not be revolutionary, but it's pretty damned solid, and every feature demo'd today was like they had been reading my mind for the past two years.

iPhone camera (or any phone camera) does NOT equal the quality of a real camera, I don't care what reality distortion Apple tries or how many lenses they cram in the 8 mm body. Front lit, back lit, 8 MP, 20 MP, it's all terrible compared to a real camera, primarily because the sensor is so small. The camera in a phone is probably the least important part in my opinion. I'd rather them put the time and effort into every other aspect of the phone's design.

The iPhone may be one of the most used cameras... but that's because most people couldn't care less about image quality or just don't know better.

The only legit reason for buying an iPhone is because you like iOS and/or your tied (trapped?) into Apple's ecosystem. And even then your looking at paying more for hardware, apps, and system updates. I've owned an android phone for almost 2 years and I've spent less than $10 on apps (and no I haven't pirated anything). Everytime I try to get an app for my girlfriend's iTouch I have to put money down, pretty lame. Admittedly, there are pro and cons there, like free app vs paid app quality. But for the popular apps, you are getting the same app on android for free.

Also, don't forget that Ice Cream Sandwich is being released on the 11th. iOS5 might look shiny and new now, but let's see what Google comes up with.

I wonder how fast the iPhone 4S's graphics chip will be in comparison to the iPad. They said dual core graphics like the iPad, but they don't say what chip. They said 7x the performance of the iPhone 4, not 9x like the iPad. So I wonder if it just uses a down clocked 543MP2, or something else. I'm sure AT can find out :)
  • Andy the Engineer - Tuesday, December 6, 2011 - link

    Andrew C,
Your antenna diversity comment is absurd. If you have professional test and measurement equipment you would know the iPhone 4S has a totally redesigned antenna system. On the outside it may appear simlar, but works differently. Apple redesigned it because it did have a flaw on ALL versions of the iPhone 4. Apple would not have spent lots and lots of $$$$$$ to "improve" the antenna system if there wasnt a problem.... You are a disgrace to engineers. If you have a degree, get your money back. If not, leave testing to the professionals.
