I hate to say this, but these phones are butt ugly.

The camera makes me think of Hal from 2001.

IMO, I don't like curved displays. The facial unlock I don't care for either. And I'm the customer that would rather have a great main camera and a wide angle view camera.

These things are all junk for $1000+.

I think their BoM increased when starting to use Qualcomm and realized they can try to position themselves as "premium" to command a higher price. The 888(+) is certainly more expensive than HUAWEI's SoCs used to be (for the group).

HONOR is now what that US "national security embargo" wanted it to be. The problem was Huawei was using ARM technology but US companies like Qualcomm were not making a profit on every handset. Now they do so the world is "fine" again.

That's sad as Kirin 9000 was the only N5 for Android. Qualcomm's 888 is on 5LPE, which is practically N7P, with the "5 nm" being all marketing fluff. So you get a 5nm design printed on 7nm, it runs hot and the GPU alone spikes to a ridiculous 8w, reminding me of Rocket Lake...

Curved screens are a durability AND usability nightmare.
  • Spunjji - Friday, August 13, 2021 - link

I genuinely hate them. I went from a OnePlus 6 to an 8 Pro, and I was already irritated by the curved edges of the 6's display that made fitting a tempered glass screen protector a total pain - but this has been a whole other level of irritation. Anything that involves moving a UI element near the edge of the screen becomes a frustrating nightmare. It's like having a screen that's a solid 5mm narrower on each side, only I'm paying for that useless display.

True. Never dropped by S8+ but is developing or growing no touch zones from the two top corners. It is going to cost me to have it fixed, I simply bought a Poco X3 Pro which surprisingly faster, bigger, better in every way at 1/3 the price

So this corporation is now 100% off from Huawei ? Even so the Magic UI is questionable. On top Honor had Bootloader unlock but only with a request system. I wonder how they handle now.

Moving to the Camera system and the Price / Hardware - Why should I spend so much cash on a device which has far more inferior hardware than a Sony Xperia 1 Mark III ? Compared to that device this phone doesn't have the usual lost yet important HW set - 3.5mm jack and MicroSD slot. But not only that, the price is literally even more than Sony phone. At-least that phone has a good battery optimization as for their name and has a ton of Camera Pro UI feature set which makes up for the LG's lost space in the Phone built for power users. Worst part is 3DToF focus restricted to the expensive model. Xperia 5 Mark III has same optics of the 1 and same spec sheet except the 4K OLED. This one has a 1440P OLED which is probably good. And more over what is this insane camera focus by the companies, how does every single buyer of these devices look into such crazy camera systems. Perhaps more of the TikTok and other Social Media data analysis is making these companies go mad at the camera specs. Too damn sensors too ugly and unwieldy and confusing.

Too much cost for a Chinese brand which doesn't even command that high rate of build cost. That heatsink design has to be proven until then it cannot be said to shell that much cash.

Man phones are getting really insanely expensive esp the fact how these 4 digit priced devices are outdated in 6 months to 12 months max and lifetime being 2 years tops since battery is a consumable, how is the Honor servicing in US that's another question.

Also apparently Xiaomi launched Mi Mix 4 which has a solid under display system than Z Fold 3 trash.

Phone sales are stangnating and prices have to skyrocket in order to keep profits and happy investors.

In my wiew yep you get your phone outdated in 6 months but honestly the upgrades are so minor yet they usually command another price increase.
Can we even say that 888+ makes 888 outdated or that 89 deg curvature makes you upgrade from an 88 deg one ?

I for myself woved not to buy a 5G phone no matter the other benefits (screen camera etc.). I view it as a 150$ premium that will not be useable for a few years if at all (no concrete 5G frequencies for my country yet). In other words i see it as a scam.

As a person who purchased an Honor 8, I wouldn't touch another Honor device with a 30' pole. The device itself was fine. EMUI wasn't great, but aside from the launcher and settings menu you don't really need to interact with it. The problem was the GODAWFUL software support. The US updates would sit on their server "not authorized" for months after Europe and Asia had them.

There was a monthly software update each month for the first six, and then maybe three to five over the next year and a half. The custom ROM options were "Open Kirin" which was a closed source, GPL-violating, dumpster fire that got updated maybe twice.

    >So this corporation is now 100% off from Huawei ?

Technically yes, but the "independent" Honor is now about 90% owned by Chinese government entities, and it's a very clever move because it gave them an excuse to give Huawei another multi-billion cash infusion(the smartphone market obviously doesn't have too much growth potential, Honor's sticker price isn't expected to be recuperated in decades) while retaining full control of Honor and gaining some legal wriggle room in dealing with the US.

Same poor ultrawide camera as on P50 series, no 8K recording and way too oversized - over 16 cm tall.
  • 5j3rul3 - Sunday, August 15, 2021 - link

P50 Pro's UWA is EXCELLENT due to its new optimized algorithm, which made IT CAN DIRECTLY COMPETE with Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+, Find X3 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro, X60 Pro+, S21 Ultra in UWA region.

8K is useless for smartphones now, 4k 60p / 30p are the all round better choice. (In all smartphones, 8K recording produce less detail than 4K !!!)
  • 5j3rul3 - Sunday, August 15, 2021 - link

Just find out P50 Pro's UWA shots.

It can reserve a lot of details and keep propriet color render in ultra low light even compre to who used IMX718, IMX766, IMX586 with marco gimbal as WUA !!!

Looks like i wont be upgrading until i can buy only 6+ camera phones. Meanwhile everyone will be laughing at my single back cam companion.

Other than that is there any reason for those ever more complex cooling thingyies ? Many 888 devices i saw running (benchmarks) at something like 65 C surface temps so the soc might be very well at 100 at silicon level.

If so called liquid graphene active fan turbo X and so on solutions work why the phone runs hot enough to burn you ? If they do not why keep them there ? They consume like multiple headphone-jacks worth of internal space especially those active fans.

Some US politicians are campaigning to have Honor added to the infamous entity list. The future of Honor phones is far from certain.
  • s.yu - Saturday, August 14, 2021 - link

I can't tell if you need more cameras or less, if you need less then at least you have Sharp Aquos R6 for the time being, Japanese localization only though.

I prefer being spied on by Americans, not the Chinese. I'll stick with Apple.
  • vladx - Sunday, August 15, 2021 - link

To each its own, I for one would rather be spied by a country that has zero power over me and my country.
  • s.yu - Sunday, August 15, 2021 - link

Imagine a Chinese living in China claiming on a Chinese-controlled website that "I'd rather be spied on by the US because they have no power over me"...lmao!! You should be so grateful you're not living in China.

A while back China's foreign ministry claimed that "In China, nobody is convicted for words", now just a couple days ago a teacher in Jiangxi got jailed for "inappropriate comments" because he casually suggested (half-jokingly, with emojis) that COVID quarantine restrictions should be relaxed.
  • s.yu - Sunday, August 15, 2021 - link

Oh yeah, whereever you live, I should remind you that China probably has more power than you think. Chinese capital was found to have infiltrated quite a few house reps in the US, and IIRC at least one senator, if you live in former USSR territory then you're even more vulnerable.

I have an old friend from school who works for my country's intelligence agency so I can tell you with utmost confidence that China has attempted no spying actions in my country, unlike Russia regarding which I helped my friend uncover and track Russian plants at his request.

Finally. If it wasn't for Huawei we'd still have phones with 16mp cams. Hopefully HONOR can continue the trend of improving camera tech, especially seeing as the other oems are lazy.
