That chassis looks suspiciously like my old Asus G53 - http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookreview/asus-...

The math seems off, especially when you can choose the Ion drives instead of the Eco 5100s.

3*4tb Sabrent nvme drives would be ~2200$
    2*8tb Micron 5210 Ion would be ~1800$

Thats only 4000$ of storage. I'd know, I've been price tracking those 8tb ssds since launch, I really want one!

    Multiply by two for installation!
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

The article mentions that doesn’t include installation or raid setup.
  • FastCarsLike - Sunday, April 26, 2020 - link

Yes. clicking a few buttons on bios is worth a few thousand.. oh wait.. you want us to plug them into the chasis? That's $10,000 sir.
  • Drkrieger01 - Friday, February 14, 2020 - link

This is normal for OEMs. For example, HP charges a $450 USD premium to go from a 500GB mechanical to a 512GB M.2 in a workstation laptop. Dell does the same, Lenovo not as much (but still higher than off the shelf)
  • Retycint - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - link

On the Surface Pro, for instance, going from 128gb to 256gb costs a whopping $300. That's equivalent to $2400 per TB. OEM storage pricing is insane and I refuse to buy any laptop with a soldered SSD
  • milkywayer - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - link

Same. I refuse to buy a laptop with soldered RAM. Looking at the stewpid dell xps 13.
  • hennes - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

GreenReaper> Re double installation costs: True. For almost any OEM. But for sure also including Eurocom.

Milkywayer> Re soldered RAM: Their model range tend to come with 4 SoDIMM slots. B

Is this really news? My HP ZBook17 G5 does this as well. I'd have to get an adapter for the optical bay but it already has 3 x M2, 1 x 2.5" bay, and then the optical bay.
  • sbrown23 - Friday, February 14, 2020 - link

Can you get the ZBook configured that way with 28TB straight from HP? Does HP offer 2x RTX 2080, an Intel 9900K and 128GB RAM? If not ...
  • sandtitz - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - link

The article subject is "28 TB of Storage in a Laptop? Eurocom Has It" which sounds like something extraordinary. It isn't since 28TB can be fitted in other laptops as well.

The HP Zbook 17 G6 can be fitted with 128GB *ECC* and a 5GHz E-2286M CPU. The RTX 5000 option is faster than a single 2080, and has 16B memory instead of 8GB...

Nonetheless, the EUROCOM is like faster since it uses desktop components and the Zbook relies on much lower TDP components. The EUROCOM is a DTR with a small UPS strapped on, whereas the Zbook is a mobile workstation with many hours of battery time. Apples and oranges.

HP doesn't offer 8TB SSD's factory installed, but you'd be pretty stupid to buy them from the OEM anyway. If I had to buy this EUROCOM laptop I certainly wouldn't buy the >$4000 8TB SSDs from them but order them from elsewhere for significantly cheaper. Micron 5210 8TB is available for $800!
  • dotted - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

Thats moving the goal post. Which other laptop OEM give you the option for 28TB of storage? How stupid it is is irrelevant to the question asked.
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

Yeah but they are talking about 28 TB being offered from factory,we all know it’s stupid to pay the prices but surely someone will and has before.
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

The 5000 isn’t necessarily faster and they have completely different usage. Someone looking for ecc ram and workstation components will look ar euro workstation laptops which also offer those components you mention.

About time we started getting 4TB NVMe SSDs
  • eastcoast_pete - Friday, February 14, 2020 - link

Outrageous price, but the Xeon-based Tornado decked out with ECC RAM and lots of SSD storage could function as a portable server. Not sure if it can be had with a 10Gb ethernet adapter. That being said, the price is still stratospheric.

I have 100 TB in a mini-itx NAS. It's fun just to have the space and not to have to worry about running out (though my NAS is half full lol).
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

It is a pain when you’re laptop runs low but 28 tb of ssd storage when the majority of the content would be fine on a hdd.
  • boeush - Friday, February 14, 2020 - link

I have that exact chassis at home (a *much* cheaper, and considerably older, build from Clevo, not Eurocom - but who cares), so maybe I shouldn't be the one mouthing off... yet still, that's not exactly the sort of high-design I'd expect from a $20,000 machine!

Come on, Eurocom. If you're going to sell super-high-end uber-pricey computers like that, at least *consider* updating the look-and-feel to fit the bill...
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

They just use what Clevo offers, but yeah if I’m paying even 2k I’m looking at the razer or MacBook type design and builds. Just a tad bigger To cram in all those components though.

Why no RTX6000 Laptop GPUs being offered?

    384bit and based on 2080Ti...

    Easy pass...
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

They don’t offer the 2080ti in a laptop and the 6000 is a 295w part that costs $4k in desktop form. Imagine what they’d charge for a laptop version,$10k maybe?
  • airdrifting - Friday, February 14, 2020 - link

Yea this thing is going to run 90C+ constantly.
  • Retycint - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - link

That's not a bad thing in itself. It's always a tradeoff between performance and temps, and in this kind of systems I think most of its users would prefer performance over a 10C cooler temperature.
  • hennes - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

If it runs at about the same as the Sky X7C (it smaller brother with only 2xMVME/2xSATA) it runs at a surprisingly cool 45C - 50C. One of the advantages of a nice large chassis with plenty room for hearpipes and larger fans.
  • Tomatotech - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - link

There's several 16TB SSDs available on the enterprise market. They're not on open sale, but I would expect an OEM like this laptop manufacturer to be able to source them.
  • Willx1 - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

Sorry not questioning you but 16 tb in the 2.5” form factor?
  • Tomatotech - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

    2.5" SAS SSD , yes.
    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/15tb-samsung-pm163...
    https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/microns-new-15tb...
  • Tomatotech - Sunday, February 16, 2020 - link

Or even a 32TB SSD in 2.5" SAS for only £8,000:
    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/3072-tb-samsung-pm...

Though AnandTech thinks 16TB is the realistic maximum:
    https://www.anandtech.com/show/14081/the-reality-o...

It seems linked to rebuild time, which would take 9 hours for an 8TB drive at 500MB/s, and bring annual server uptime down to 3 nines from 5 nines. However, if a NVMe drive was 10x faster then maybe 80TB would be OK.
  • Billy Tallis - Monday, February 17, 2020 - link

Eurocom doesn't offer any 2.5" drive options thicker than 9.5mm, and those 16TB SAS drives are 15mm. They probably wouldn't fit. Squeezing in a SAS HBA would be pretty hard, too, because I'm not aware of anyone making small low-port-count chips for that market. An 8-port SAS chip is 23+mm on a side.

  • Eurocom Scam - Monday, June 15, 2020 - link

Don't buy from Eurocom Ottawa, they well know scammers in Canada. They only sell laptops and ignoring all warranty situations, only asking to pay for the warranty. They are scammers and I filing legal investigation against them.
