If Apple released more new Mac models, I'm confident they would sell more. Right now only the very recent MacBook Pro and iMac Pro are 'new' with everything else being a year old at least. In particular the state of the Mac Pro is just sad.
Its a good point on this blog site. But its clear that even as Tim says Macs are an important part of the business, the sales are down 13% year over year and only account for 10% of revenue (and I'd guess an even lower amount of net profit). I don't know if they are just not concerned, if they are allowing the Mac to go the way of the iPod (slow burn into oblivion), or if they really think the iPad is the way forward. I guess only time will tell.
Mac Mini hasn't been updated in 4 years, and honestly, the 6 year old model (2012 edition) is still the only one to consider because a) it's quad core b) has memory expansion slots c) is cheaper
I just don't get Apple sometimes...such an easy SKU to update, and the margins are way higher because it's an a la cart product. People have to spend another $500 on a Apple monitor and another $150 on a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Why would they waste engineering talent on products that hardly make any money relative to iPhones? The fact that they seldom update the Mac line tells you all you need to know about what Apple thinks.
Given the stagnation that Intel has shown it's hardly a surprise that Apple has slowed the upgrade cycle. Not that some of the designs aren't terribly outdated even taking that into consideration.
You're all missing the point. Apple is putting the bare minimum into new INTEL Macs because all the real engineering and design talent is going to the ARM Macs. My guess (pure guess) is these are announced at WWDC 2019 to get developers on board, and released to the public a year later; though that schedule could slip by a year.
The issue is not that Apple isn't interested in the market, or thinks it is too small; Apple will own everything that matters in this market soon enough. The issue is that to get to PCs that people want to buy, that are worth replacing what they bought 5 years ago, Apple has to boil the ocean; with not just new CPUs but a whole new architecture. All we are seeing from the outside is the small parts of that (like the T2 stuff) that can be released standalone.
Apple has either released or announced a lot of stuff in the past few years too soon. I think they have learned from this and will NOT be announcing future mac plans up until they know everything is lined up just right.

I have gone FULL APPLE ECOSYSTEM - iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, and iMac desktop. The level of interoperability between these devices is something that no other Manufacturer can match right now. Here's a hint for you: it's called UX. Apple still cares about it. No other company does it as well as them, partly because "great customer service" is an alien concept to Asian companies.
Apple and great customer service should never be in the sentence ever. Yes they are all smiles and there to sell you their stuff but god forbid you ever have to get it fixed. They make you jump through so many hoops and if you miss one of them they have the right to refuse service to their customers. It is right in their agreement all you have to do is read the fine print.
Then again it seems some of the other companies are starting to do this as well just not to the extent Apples has been doing it over the years.
That's the best market for the iPhone: the aging population. There is no doubt iOS is significantly simpler and easier to use so the learning curve is very adaptable. Of course this comes at the cost of functionality and capability but those things are irrelevant to people who only need basic features.
I think the iPhone has always been one of the most well-rounded phones. It excels at nothing (except raw SoC performance) but does everything above average: camera, battery life, easy of use, app store selection, ecosystem integration, features, etc. The only things that it really fails at are obviously price, and durability\repairability, which are just awful. I hate fixing iPhones, partially because they are pretty difficult, but the parts are expensive and Apple has this BS policy of trying to fuck over 3rd party manufacture compatibility. The error 53, battery calibration, and ambient light sensor issues being the obvious recent takeaways. But it goes as far back as MFi certification for charging cables...it's getting ridiculous.
And why the hell haven't they adopted USB-C like the rest of the modern world yet. Even Nintendo has accepted USB-C as the standard charging port (The 3DS actually uses a standard although not well known USB port as well) and they (Nintendo) have historically been the most proprietary console developer.

I just bought a phone for 125 euros, and it has pretty much all the features of flagships from 18 months ago. It's a great, highly function phone by any measure, except perhaps fashion - it has no notch.

I have just chosen LG G7 ThinQ as my work phone. It matches Galaxy S9+ quite well, spec to spec - a bit below for some, a bit better for some other specs... for 2/3 of a price in local shops.
Price wasn't even the factor - I had budget approved for either. I have been using LG products at home and, in general, are happier with the brand, compared to Samsung products I have encountered. And yet, Samsung sells more phones than anyone else in the world. Even if they are overpriced compared to direct Android competitors.
With that said, I am considering iPhone as my personal phone replacement (currently Lumia 950XL). Even if I live in Windows world. Android and Outlook.com are still not playing nice - various issues with syncing contacts and calendar... and I cannot make my Android send SMS and other notifications to my BT hands-free. Aging Win phone not only plays all notifications over BT speakerphone, but is also clever enough to activate Cortana when on BT, and informs me who the SMS is from, and would I like to hear it.
It might be that I am failing to figure out how to achieve the same on Android, but for the time I have invested looking for option, I haven't found any...?
In a free market, people can buy whatever they want, however they want. It isn't like the government is subsidizing iPhones for "lifeline" programs or something. People are spending their own money on this stuff. And in a lot of cases people want an iPhone because it holds resale value longer than any Android phone (because of the support cycle and the perception of 'quality') and there is no debate everyone these days practically needs a modern smartphone. We live off of them. Decent cellular connectivity, camera, and battery performance are essential.
Looks like they might have to wait until around Q4 '19 to break the trillion dollar value mark. But then, the valuation might not be entirely based on net income, I'm not a business major.
Wait, that's not right... They went from being valued at $750B to $935B in less than a year, so I would guess they'll break a trillion by year's end or Q1 '19.

All my professional friends all own an iphone. Probably because the price is not that big of a deal to them. And it's probably easier for them to use than an Android.
