I imagine a Micro-B to USB-C cable will work fine with the drive. As far as being USB3.1G2 speeds, I don't know if a single SSD of this speed will really be held back by the 3.0 interface speeds.
Such a cable does work well for this, and this drive is far from being held back by usb3.0. I have a 256gb and the 512gb version. I use a startek USB type B cable to type c cable and it works quit well.
For my backup drive I use a Samsung 950 Evo (an "internal" SSD) plugged into a USB 3.1 Gen 2 SATA-to-USB-C cable. I compared it to a USB 3.1 Gen 1 cable and the Gen 2 cable is slightly faster (maybe 10-20%). It shaves a couple minutes off full backups on my MacBook Pro.
"The enclosure is indeed sturdy - I had it drop down to the floor from a 6ft high shelf by accident multiple times, and the unit was none the worse for the wear." Poltergeist? Kitty cat? Seismic activity? ESP?
It's probably priced out of backup media usage (although if so, why stop at 512GB?). You typically at least have the option of backing up in less hostile environments or at least storing your backup material there.
An odd device, but I've seen plenty of machines it would attach to (military/field engineering/you name it), and they will pay quite a bit more for such a beast.

Great article! In my opinion, it's a shame that the port on the external drive is not USB-C.By the way, this article would benefit from better photography.

exactly, that micro USB connector is quite iffy at best of times.Cygni - Thursday, June 8, 2017 - link

I'm glad they didn't go with a USB-C. I don't have a need to replace any of my non USB-C devices.TheinsanegamerN - Friday, June 9, 2017 - link
They could have easily supplied a type C to type A cable.peterlobl - Thursday, June 8, 2017 - link

Double the capacity and one could have viable backup media.wumpus - Friday, June 9, 2017 - link
