This was the first motion capture demo I saw today. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it was neat that they could get away with not needing to attach anything to the actor.View Original Size
This is the same demo as the previous image but with my flash off. Even so, you can see how the reflective balls stand out much more in the streaks than the rest of the actor's body.View Original Size
The reflective capabilities of the tiny balls in this mocap demo is huge. Some of these demos used this type of reflective ball attachment (often combined with velcro) to help the computer identify control points.View Original Size
Next up was another motion capture technology that left the actor free of attaching balls to key points on the body. But either that suit is necessary in the process, or these guys just have terrible taste.View Original Size
The final motion capture demo that made use of reflectors. These kept falling off the actor in spite of how incredibly unenthusiastic she was. Of course, it was very late in the day by the time I hit this booth, so I can certainly understand.View Original Size
And then there was this way to go. Not only does the actor need to wear tiny balls all over themselves, but they need a batter pack attached to their back in order to power these tiny red lights. They were actually much brighter in person than they appear in the picture. These guys were the only ones going this way, so I suppose that is something. Uniqueness does still count right?View Original Size
It is incredibly hard to miss the Sony booth as you enter the North Hall floor. The size of that screen is simply stunning. It's actually further away than it looks here, as that Playstation sign is a good 40 feet in front of the screen.View Original Size
My first trip down stairs towards the North Hall expo floor. Tiny bubbles off excitement dancing through my blood as the ubergeek within drew closer to his destination. Okay, no one's reading this right? Good ... We'll just keep that to ourselves now.View Original Size
Okay ... so I watch G4. Sue me. It was much better when TechTV was a different network and G4 was the cute little gaming spot that sported shows like The Screensavers and (dare I say it) Portal. But there's no room for the intensly geeky on the new young horny dude format pioneered by Spike. Of course, in spite of all that they haven't manage to totally destroy all the good shows as X-Play is still around. I think I'll stop by during filming tomorrow...View Original Size
But at the same time, I couldn't turn away. It was like a train wreck that you just have to look at. I mean, you want to run up and help people get off, but you're so afraid to go near it that you just clam up. And then you start taking pictures ... except if it were a train wreck I think I would have been more inclined to help save people. Anyone who wants one of these, I suppose, deserves it.View Original Size
This is the Z Dome. A distorted mess of a display that is oddly intreguing. Getting up almost inside it does give an air of immeriveness that is almost as disturbing as it is distorted... And from a distance it give a kind of evil parallax effect. I don't know what it is about these things, but apparenlty they are moving toward the consumer market. While this one is "big" for consumers, the final product will have a projector mounted underneath and reflected up to the back of the dome rather than the projector behind the screen thing they had going on here (take a look at that in the next image). I didn't have the hear to tell them how much I really wasn't impressed.View Original Size
