I always say best podcast but they exceed my expectations every time. The next one will be the best podcast every. I can't wait to hear more about Haswell.
It would be good to estimate if these new Smartphones with Cortex A15, Krait, A6 CPUs and fast GPUs like imaginations, mali, tegra and adreno with high Memory bandwith are capable of running popular pc games like Cod Modern Warfare (2007) if ported. I remember that requirements were 2.4 Pentium4 CPUs and Geforce 6600 or Radeon 9800pro GPUs. Also Ion netbooks with GeForce 9400 almost run Cod MW in low q.
I imagine that if an Atom CPU perf is like a dual cortex A9, new Quad Cores A15s and Krait should very well have the power to run games like HL2 or CodMW if ported. In the GPU side I see bandwiths near 10 GB/s with next Mali 604 arround 12.8GB/s. Thats kind of low considering that the requirement cards where close to 20GB/s, but still there is tile rendering and compression tech advanced a lot. Fillrate for those PC cards where arround 4 Gtexels/s, that seems a big bottleneck too.
So, do you think these new Smartphones like Galaxy SIII or new Iphone5 would run MW if ported? if not, would next gen be enough? where is the bottleneck? CPU? fill rate and bandwith? With which old desktop CPUs would you compare this Smartphones CPUs in perf and architecture? Pentium III, 4? lots of questions for next postcad.
I know I don't speak for everyone, but don't shy away from getting technical in these discussions. This is the only place that I've heard any level of details in a discussion about an iPhone. It's fucking fantastic. Don't hide your knowledge!
Bah, last week you promised to discuss the new Kindle's which is lacking in this podcast. While no promise attached, no mention of new GPU's from nVidia, though they're mobile parts just reaching the desktop.
As for the podcast, another excellent show. I liked the discussion and impressions on the iPhone 5. I also like how you discussed what was inside of the A6 and how you handled the story moving from Cortex A15's to custom logic on the site. I do wish that PA-Semi would have been mentioned in the podcast as they're likely a source for many offload engines and perhaps the improved memory controller.
I also like the discussion of Haswell and how the future may see Intel vs. Apple. This reminds me of how Intel was flirting with the idea of being a foundry for other OEM's. They initially declined and then indicated 'maybe' to the idea fabbing an ARM part for the mobile market. I strongly suspect that Intel was thinking Apple when they changed to a 'maybe' stance though I figure that this is their plan B. Right now Intel seems to be focused getting their x86 SoC's down to the tablet levels to head of any advances made by ARM by any designer. Intel doesn't want to directly fight Apple as they're currently both a friend and a foe in the market. So for the moment Intel is content to fight by proxy. The currently primary plan is that Intel is actively helping OEM's build ultrabooks and x86 tablets to help compete against the Mac Book Air and iPad respectively.
Well for tablets and phones Intel is where they would be a direct competitor to Apple. Those will be competing with Apple's ARM chips vs Intel's. I really hope Intel succeeds and with their 2nd to none R&D create some incredible chips in the future. Windows 8 / Android + Intel, sounds awesome to me. Especially since Intel is just accelerating on all fronts, future tech, CPU and GPU. Will be exciting to see what Intel visions for the future of mobile. Though personally I still prefer just having a monster laptop on the go + phone, skipping the tablet.
I love the AT podcasts, but you should make the link more visible on the front page, maybe a separate button at the top or highlight the Pipeline link background in a different color (say, light green).
Keep on producing quality podcasts. We always appreciate the in-depth reviews and nearly exhaustive (in a good way) podcasts.
Always loved your review. Always very intelligent and thorough and balance. It's even better hearing you guys just talk about tech like I would with my geek friends. Keep it up guys.
Also, someone on the forums brought up a good point about excess filesize. I personally don't have a problem, but some people playing from mobile devices might have storage limitations or bandwidth caps. My response:
"Pure speech compresses pretty well. You don't need more than 64 kbps with mp3, 48 kbps with AAC (less than 50MB for a 2 hr podcast), and that's being generous. And it would still sound clearer than radio of course."
I am admittedly an apple hater, but even if i try to keep that aside, i can't justify one full episode be pretty much dedicated to iPhone 5. It got a bit annoying for me. And specially when you consider that was a 3 day IDF which got almost completely overlooked, it's really absurd that a 2nd rate (IMO) mobile telephone model got more attention than a 3 day carnival.
Also, Anand, your audio seems to get clipped too soon when you stop speaking, which makes me wonder if the audio stopped playing.
I don't own any Apple devices and likely never will because of their behaviour and the OS. However, I thought it was interesting what they talked about and they never hyped it too much when put in perspective (LTE = old hat, 4" = old hat, in-cell = interesting, own SoC = interesting etc.). 2nd rate device is clearly your own view as well, looking at the revenue the iPhones and other iDevices generate, they are clearly still among the leaders in the market.
I personally wouldn't mind 3 or 4 hours podcasts or 2-a-week podcasts to cover more stuff, so that you guys can get to cover more stuff even. But I understand time and scheduling constraints, so just keep up what you are doing now! :D
I really hate people costantly overlook that Apple while being most profitable, contributes least for the tech world. The machead morons claim Samsung is breaching patents? What patents? The design with single button, and horizontal speaker at the top and rounded edges was released 6 months before the first iPhone by Samsung. The slide to unlock? Yeah Microsoft 3 years before. Siri? Yup, a Chinese Android app a year before. Apple doesn't innovate anything. I also hate how they rename and trademark technology that isn't theirs. Retina display? Please, that's LG's R&D and product, nothing to do with Apple. Thunderbolt port? Please, that's Intel tech again. Samsung contributes technology to 3G/4G tech, AMOLED, and other LCD tech, DDR3, DDR4, SSD, their own controllers, the list of technology and contributions from Samsung are endless. The only thing Apple contributes is proprietary methods to screw over the customer. Proprietary SSD so you can't upgrade easily? Yeah that's awesome, thank you. Gluing battery to the aluminum casing so again not easily repaired/replaced? Another great innovation, awesome. Whatever, I don't see why Apple products need to be discussed in depth since they don't innovate or provide anything new. Just because Apple morons haven't seen it before until Apple shoved it in their face doesn't mean it's innovative, it just means you're clueless to what happens outside of their Apple world.
Well, with e-ink displays they only refresh when you "turn" the page. So those are already low power, and last weeks on standby. But it would definitely help for color tablets that use conventional LCD displays.
This will be my second and last time saying this (I don't want to be TOO annoying). I think having some listing of topics and where they land in a 1-to-2-hour conversation a great convenience.
I love your Podcasts (and videos too), but it is not always easy to sit down for a long time and list to it in one sitting. Having the ability to jump to a topic of interest would be a great consideration for your audience.

I really agree. And if you're going with that, why not turn it into a .cue file? With a supporting player you get an instant seekable MP3. No idea if Podcast players support cue files, decent music players do.
As for the file sizes, 44.1 kHz stereo for a podcast is really rather silly. This sounds perfectly fine if reencoded to 22050 Hz mono with default quality VBR using Lame. Filesize is about 50 MB, less that 1/3 of the original mp3...
This was my first AnandTech Podcast and I throughly enjoyed it. However, Anand whatever mic you used for this one (or the settings you used with it) caused your speech to do that weird thing where you hear silence, then your voice, then silence again. I'm assuming its a background/noise cancelling feature in effect, but it really sounds bad to my ears. Please dial it in more or turn it off completely.
It's great that you're doing podcasts, but please try and make them shorter. I quite like anandtech and I'd love to listen to your podcasts, however, two hours is much too long. I mean, think about it - two hours - nowadays, most films are shorter. I'm sure you have interesting stuff to say, but I'm also certain you can compress the information.
Here's a suggestion: make podcasts more focused (e.g. one on the iphone 5 and one on haswell) and cut on the, well, smalltalk. I believe you can successfully make this podcast, episode 5, into two 20 minutes ones while keeping all the information and not sounding boring.
I honestly don't think most people can spend two hours on a podcast, despite how much they'd like to. Which is bad considering many of those people would listen to your podcasts if they were shorter.
P.S. I had no idea the French came up with croissants in a gaseous state. :p
Could you set the category of podcast mp3s to 'Podcast'? Currently it is left blank. This would be helpful to at least Windows phone users as music files with 'Podcast' category get added to a separate Podcasts section.
