"Two days ago Intel made the mistake of playing a video of a DX11 game (F1 2011) instead of running the game itself on an Ivy Bridge Ultrabook"

How can anyone one make this kind of Mistake??????????
  • Jambe - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

    Last-minute driver or hardware issue?

It is an unreleased product after all.
  • paul878 - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

What the did was NOT a mistake, It a scam!!
  • Hector2 - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Agreed. Intel's VP screwed up big time and made a fool out of himself replacing a demo that wasn't ready with a video. Guys at his level are paid big bucks not to have this serious lack of judgement
  • Natfly - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Not necessarily a mistake by playing the video, but by being caught.

You have an unlreased cpu with an unlreased gpu (keep in mind intel gpu drivers); do you provide a live demo and risk shit going haywire or do you show a video of it performing optimally?

But yeah, it's wrong to misrepresent your product's abilities from "how they actually are" as "how you eventually expect them to be."

I'm not excusing their actions, but it isn't unexpected.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

It's apparently common practice to record all live demos in case things go wrong...
  • AnandThenMan - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Is it also common practice to pretend to be playing the game until you realize you can't get away with it anymore? But I shouldn't be surprised, instead of calling out Intel like you SHOULD be (and any other company that pulls this garbage), you continue to make excuses for them. And would you point me to any other public demonstrations that faked what was supposed to be real time, live gameplay? After all, this is "common practice".

The integrity of this site is becoming more and more suspect, not to mention yourself.
  • Sabresiberian - Friday, January 13, 2012 - link

Anand himself called out Intel when he published his first article. How can anyone say he was trying to do anything except make Intel prove what they claimed? If he wanted to hide what they did, he simply wouldn't have mentioned it at all.

Seriously. Some of you need to check your logic. You also need to read more articles written by Anand if you are going to question his integrity. Quit arguing out of your hatred for Intel (or whatever excuse you have for not thinking about what you are saying).

Sometimes, I wish there was a test for reading comprehension before people were allowed to post on sites like this. The only real slide downhill I see on this site is in the quality of comments from some people who post here.

In the light of what has been proven about Sandy Bridge's capabilities, why is it so hard to believe Intel can, and has, put DX11 on Ivy Bridge's die? In the light of the fact that DX11 is more efficient than DX10, and there are Sandy Bridge ultrabooks already in existence, why is it so hard to believe Intel can put DX11 on a die and put Ivy Bridge in an ultrabook?

Why would they need to fake anything? It simply makes no sense.

    ;)

How can you be excusing what Intel did. They Purposely was trying to deceive, even You.
  • Khenglish - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Have you guys heard any news on whether or not mobile IVB is going to be backward compatible with mobile SNB systems? I heard that IVB fits in the same 988 socket, but there are rumors that IVB will not be supported despite this.
  • chuckula - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

This is a cheap cop-out! You didn't do a DNA analysis to confirm that Mooley Eden actually touched those keys! I have it on good authority from the former employees of the AMD marketing department that it is physically UNpossible for Intel to EVER improve its graphics! This is obviously a rigged demo using real-time raytracing and adaptive quantum prediction algorithms to render an H.264 VIDEO of what the game would look like if it could actually run on an Intel system live under user control. What a cheap fake!

(OK I hope you realize that was tongue-in cheek there. It's really annoying when ARM & AMD fanboys attack this website as being schills for Intel because you actually report facts instead of mindless parroting anti-Intel marketing propaganda)
  • ViRGE - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

I agree. Damn the truth and facts, I demand sensationalism! And never follow it up unless the follow-up is even more sensational!
  • paul878 - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

    There goes Independent Journalism!
  • mabsark - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

So, this is the third Ivy Bridge article you've done, yet you've completely ignored Trinity. Ooh look, Ivy Bridge can play a game. That's nice, but AMD just demonstrated mobile Trinity running a game, encoding a video and playing back a video all on seperate screens, and where were you?

Helping Intel smooth over their backfired PR stunt, that's where! Are these guys paying your wages or something? If not, then where's your Trinity coverage?
  • Obsoleet - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Unfortunately, the above post is spot-on.
  • jkostans - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Wow that trinity demo was way more impressive than intel's demo. I'm shocked I had to find out about this in the comments section........
  • AnandThenMan - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Anandtech.com is a division of Intel, can't really expect unbiased coverage of competing products.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

See above - our AMD meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

    Take care,
    Anand
  • B3an - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Yeah Anand can be in every place at once right.

You immature little fanboy pricks need to GROW UP.
  • Obsoleet - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

Wait, not only is it spot on but I looked up the video you referenced because I've never seen it.. and WOW.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedd...

Also added HotHardware RSS feed to FF.

Basically, watch that video, compare this with Intel's presentation and learn what pure, unadulterated rape is.
  • Obsoleet - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Ok... That was a lot of accidental posts. Needless to say the original page the video exists on is here

  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Our AMD meeting is tomorrow late afternoon, can't post coverage of something we haven't been to yet :) The show is far from over :)

    Take care,
    Anand
  • BSMonitor - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Hah, AMD is still waiting on GF for one of these processors.. The machines there are running Bulldozer cores and it takes a LONG time for them to get anything meaningful done.
  • Natfly - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

So Intel gets called out on the use of pre-recorded footage of a game, and they rectify it by allowing press to actually experience the game on their product, proving the performance is accurate. Exactly how is Anand bending over backward for Intel?
  • Hector2 - Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - link

and some like you who are in serious denial are trying REALLY hard to be an ostrich and keep your head buried in the sand
  • dealcorn - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

So Mooly, the guy in a beret, clicked the wrong icon. He was badly scripted. How embarrassing. Now Intel has rounded up multiple independent journalists to verify that the demo works great if you click the correct icon. Lets all pile on because a wrong icon click is a big deal?
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

Note that Intel didn't ask us to do any of this. Just responding to reader requests :)

    Take care,
    Anand
  • B3an - Thursday, January 12, 2012 - link

No. It's called good Journalism. You moron.
  • Johan Steyn - Friday, January 13, 2012 - link

Intel won the CPU war. Why? Because of evil marketing. Their fine was 'n mere slap on the wrist. Intel makes that fine in a quarter yet AMD lost a great deal of possible marketshare during the P4 period. It is however a miracle that a minute company like AMD is still around. Maybe it is more likely that Intel cannot let AMD die yet. Maybe ARM will change that.

Still, AMD has managed a great product with Llano. But be warned, if you think that Intel will not eventually beat ATi graphics with all their resources, you are misguided. I still think that somewhere in the future Intel will reap what they have sown and maybe another company like ARM will dig their grave, or maybe I am just an idealist.

I am not surprised that Intel once again used cunning deception. I am surprised though that people will defend it. I must say though that Anand is a bit better than Toms. Toms has probably been on Intel's payroll for quite some time. Anand please do not go the same way.
I am sure you are making enough money from your website.
  • Scali - Monday, January 23, 2012 - link

I don't get the big deal really...
Mooly was VERY OBVIOUSLY faking it.
He said something like: "Look, with one hand!", then: "Look, no hands!".
Then he said it was played back by the people backstage.
So he was quite open about the demo not being live. He just chose to present it in a humorous way.
I think some people just don't have any sense of humour.
People now try to pretend as if Intel deliberately tricked the audience into believing the demo was real, and they were 'caught' afterwards. As if nobody would have found out if sites like Anand hadn't mentioned that it wasn't a real demo?
Nothing could be further from the truth.
