I'm going with a 2200G for my son's first PC build. I remember my Pentium II 233 build with the help of Anandtech WAY back in the day, complete with SCSI HDD. It was a sweet system that lasted a long time.
Now, back the AMD build, any mobo recommendations? I would like to keep it mini-itx if possible and I am leaning toward the GIGABYTE GA-AB350N: https://amzn.to/2HFQAoS (~$109) but am open to suggestions.
Reliability is top concern and two digital video outs (HDMI, or DisplayPort, not analog DSUB). Starting with the integrated GPU but maybe down the road going discrete.
PS I remember Anand posting SO MANY motherboard reviews back when he was just a kid (and so was I). Back then I settled on a Tyan motherboard after his recommendation. :-)
You pay more for the MiniITX formfactor, in both case cost, SFX PSU cost, and motherboard feature compaction costs. Check out PcPartPicker to organize a parts list. I'd recommend just sticking with whichever X370 or X470 board is cheapest and well rated, and choosing a cheap (~$60 or less) but well rated case to go along with that. 80+ Bronze ~400W PSUs from a reputable manufacturer are cheap.
With the savings you can splurge a bit on faster/more memory or a FreeSync enabled or high refresh rate display, or nicer peripherals, all of which at the end of the day provide a more meaningful impact on a day-to-day basis than just having a "tiny" PC.
There are tons of mITX cube cases that are affordable and use standard PSUs. You also get WiFi included, and if you choose your board carefully you get GOOD WiFi included.
I just built a system using the board you just linked, for my dad. Using the 2200G too. It's a peppy little system. The board has been solid (I bought it in March and it was already 2000-ready, but flash it anyway as the newer BIOS has fixes and better RAM support). BIOS seems decent. It also has pretty good Intel WiFi preinstalled, and a decent antenna. Installed the latest driver straight from Intel. A lot of ITX boards use CRAP wifi that is unreliable with poor drivers. This saved me from having to swap wifi chips.
It's overkill since he doesn't game but I got it on sale and faster RAM is never a bad thing. All I did was kick on the XMP profile and it works flawlessly. Even faster RAM shouldn't be a problem either for Raven Ridge but once you get above a certain point you have to start thinking about what memory dies and configuration you're looking at. If you're planning on running integrated for a bit you could overclock the IGP and get somewhat faster RAM.
I am looking at this mainboard as well. I'm aiming for SkyReach 4 mini for case and HDPlex 160W, which are quite expensive but it's quite attractive (at least for me). I'd put the Ryzen 3 2200g and a pair of DDR4 (not decided yet) and call it a stelth rig :).
That said, I am actually thinking about getting a laptop instead, but laptop is not as stelth-ey as a small pc form factor IMHO :).
The integrated video scales almost linearly with memory speed so try to buy faster memory and get 2x4gb rather than 1x8gb. Also, one video showed a $20 fan vastly outperforming the standard one for overclocking. So for about an extra 10% cost or $40 you can get up to 30% performance improvement.
Yet to fully read the article but P-state OC and baseclock OC are nice if you can avoid entering OC mode that way, at least with Ryzen. No idea what works and what doesn't with RR, haven't kept up on it but do care about that with Pinnacle Ridge.
So SoC (seemingly 2D clocks) voltage should be left at ~1.1V, and GFX (seemingly 3D clocks) voltage should be at ~1.2V max in order to remain within safe limits in all scenarios. This might have changed with the latest BIOSs but until such time that it's tested, it's better to err on the side of caution.
Also for anyone with HWMonitor, if some data points aren't getting displayed correctly, give HWInfo a shot it's more Ryzen friendly.

I had planned to build an HTPC setup around the 2400G, alas both the 2200 and 2400 seem to be falling short on the home theater side (4K HDR playback at 60p using MPC-HC with madVR). Somewhat related: I would be interested to see how far one can undervolt the 2400G CPU and GPU and still get stable sort-of stock performance. [yes, I know - there's always at least one who has to be contrarian - still chasing the quiet setup]
I'd recommend just using MPV. The visual gains that the MadVR scaler uses can be extremely taxing on the GPU, depending on the settings used. With good MPV settings it literally looks 95% as good as MPC-HC + MadVR looks, at a fraction of the computational intensity, ie: less fan noise while playing back media, which you'll hear when playing back content.

According the pictures posted on reddit, undervolting a 2400G resulted in almost stock performance (less than 5% difference vs. stock, and only one benchmark, but still, promising) and an almost 25% reduction in Wh drawn for the entire setup; he used a kill-a-watt Wattmeter. Just like some people here and on reddit, I wonder if the new MoBo chipsets could allow fine-tuning, so for GPU-limited games, undervolt the CPU, and use the ~ 10-25 Wh thermal headroom gained to overclock /overvolt the GPU. Doing so might even work just with the stock cooler. Has anybody tried? Ian, can you try it?
One thing that was odd about an older stock Asrock board I was using was that you had to update to the "Bridge BIOS" (3.4? I think) before you could flash the latest 4.50. But it wasn't a big deal because Instant Flash did not even acknowledge the 4.x BIOS until I flashed the bridge BIOS. Shrug.
This particular piece isn't the end of the testing, it's only the first part. Each stage including CPU frequency, memory frequency and iGPU frequency is being analyzed/tested. Where someone looking to opt for a Ryzen 2000 series APU over say an Intel i3/i5, not everyone automatically buys an APU marketed at gaming just solely for gaming.
Rest assured, each element is being deep dived to determine sweet spots for specific tasks and uses. Of course, gaming will benefit more from increased iGPU clock speed, but not everything will and every motherboard I've tested on AM4 has multiple overclocking profiles available so setting an overclock for each individual need is easier than ever.
In sentiment with the OP, I will add that Techspot has reached 1600 Mhz on the GPU side of the 2200G by abandoning the CPU side altogether and that with the stock cooler. For the budget conscious gamers a GPU only approach would make more sense.
Yeah achieving higher clocks on the iGPU is possible if you completely ignore overclocking the CPU, that much is true! Of course we have to explore all the avenues as not everyone games, and you'll see the script as more of the series (around 4-5 pieces in total including this one) get published.
If you can, please go one step further: undervolt the CPU, and then see how far you can push the iGPU, even (or especially) on the stock cooler. Also, while you're at it, do the reverse - undervolt the iGPU, and overclock the CPU, and see how far it can be pushed on the stock cooler. For example, if I run handbrake to compress the 4K videos from my camera, I don't care much about iGPU speed, but take all the sped the CPU can give me. With gaming, it's usually the opposite.
Hi overclockers. Looking back i feel like probably one of the world oldest overclockers. Such happened that i overclocked my 4.77MHz IBM PC XT -like comp soldered on the knees from low integration chips on the home-made motherboard to ~10MHz continuously. That was in the middle of 1980th. Overlock happened just by lucky chance that i had no crystal oscillators so just the LC-based variable freq generator was made for it and it was easy to change its frequency. The overclocking was on air up to approx 10 MHz, after which dirt started to appear on the TV which was used as a monitor. Sometimes the dry ice was used too (but mostly to find bad overheating chips). Then when i added missing FP-coprocessors this computer gave me orders of magnitude larger computer power then i was getting on my job where of course the entire institute of 1000s of people time-shared couple mainframes getting very little each. There was also one very funny moment with this overclocked PC. That was the behavior of floppy drives "on steroids" when computer was more then 2x overclocked. Drives were spinning, opening, closing and reading data so fast and also producing noise of lifting rocket, that my friends who also were making their own computers, laughed hysterically. I overclock each and every computer since then.

Setting the multiplier manually automatically disables Cool'n'quiet, can it be reenabled afterwards while keeping the higher multiplier?
I plan on overclocking mine the same as my FX 6300, keep Cool'n'quiet, keep turbo and just push it all higher. I like the idle dropping down to nothing and I prefer to keep my turbo so single threaded apps (still have a few) get everything they can possibly get.
You can re-enable it no problem, I only found it to automatically disable Cool'n'Quiet on MSI boards, there's absolutely nothing stopping you enabling it again :)

thess were my exact thoughts as many people here ... underclock the CPU and overclock the GPU for gaming (spend your heat budget on the GPU) and then on other tasks overclock the cpu and underclock the gpu) BUT I expect this cannot be done on one windows session . Actually using ryzen Master , it probably could . But youd need some scripts to o switch. If i ever take the plunge (waiting for 4000mhz dram) will examine this...
Firstly, the charts for 7-zip and 3DPM are incorrect. If lower really is better, then they show the stock 2200G outperforming the overclocked 2400G. If they are so blatantly wrong, then can the others be trusted?
Secondly, DDR4 defaults to 2133 MHz (2 x 1066) if you "forget" to enable XMP, not 2400. This is not a good representation of stock RAM frequency. I would have preferred to see you set 2933 MHz, as specified by AMD.
Thirdly, the Thermaltake Floe Riing 360 is an unrealistically expensive choice of cooler for either of those processors. Who spends more on the cooler than on the processor?
Fourthly, you can overclock the iGPU and adjust the SoC voltage in the ASRock UEFI BIOS, but it's rather hidden away!

I would personally not bother to overclock any of the Ryzen lineup. The potential headaches aren't worth the 3-4% increase in performance, less when taken into account that a lot of applications don't seem to scale 1:1 with clockspeed (might be wrong on this). At least the IPC and general clockspeed is up.

Very important: Are all b350 and x370 bioses identical feature wise? In specific, the ability to set estate frequencies for core performance boost tuning like in the rig hero VI? That bios is very comprehensive, and I'd like to not have to buy that board just to have access to those features. The point is to be able to tune the turbo boost by setting high multiplier instead of ocing all cores to run at one fixed state. I just want to significantly increase single threaded ipc for gaming. Your OC's are a joke, you don't OC the cpu a part at all, it's worthless with a chip that runs at 3600Mhz base, you focus solely on the igpu.1.3v for soc voltage 1600-1700Mhz pretty much guranteed on any chip properly OCed

Setting the multiplier manually automatically disables Cool'n'quiet, can it be reenabled afterwards while keeping the higher multiplier?I plan on overclocking mine the same as my FX 6300, keep Cool'n'quiet, keep turbo and just push it all higher. I like the idle dropping down to nothing and I prefer to keep my turbo so single threaded apps (still have a few) get everything they can possibly get.

thess were my exact thoughts as many people here ... underclock the CPU and overclock the GPU for gaming (spend your heat budget on the GPU) and then on other tasks overclock the cpu and underclock the gpu) BUT I expect this cannot be done on one windows session . Actually using ryzen Master , it probably could . But youd need some scripts to o switch.If i ever take the plunge (waiting for 4000mhz dram) will examine this...

A few things trouble me about this article.Firstly, the charts for 7-zip and 3DPM are incorrect. If lower really is better, then they show the stock 2200G outperforming the overclocked 2400G. If they are so blatantly wrong, then can the others be trusted?
Secondly, DDR4 defaults to 2133 MHz (2 x 1066) if you "forget" to enable XMP, not 2400. This is not a good representation of stock RAM frequency. I would have preferred to see you set 2933 MHz, as specified by AMD.
Thirdly, the Thermaltake Floe Riing 360 is an unrealistically expensive choice of cooler for either of those processors. Who spends more on the cooler than on the processor?
Fourthly, you can overclock the iGPU and adjust the SoC voltage in the ASRock UEFI BIOS, but it's rather hidden away!

The potential headaches aren't worth the 3-4% increase in performance, less when taken into account that a lot of applications don't seem to scale 1:1 with clockspeed (might be wrong on this). Very important:Are all b350 and x370 bioses identical feature wise? In specific, the ability to set estate frequencies for core performance boost tuning like in the rig hero VI? That bios is very comprehensive, and I'd like to not have to buy that board just to have access to those features. The point is to be able to tune the turbo boost by setting high multiplier instead of ocing all cores to run at one fixed state. I just want to significantly increase single threaded ipc for gaming. With the hero VI the options to tune cpb with pstates exists.
