1) Digital camo has been standard-issue in the military for a while now.
2) Anybody who only needs a 4c/8t system, but is otherwise doing "workstation" or server-grade work. (Uptime requirements, longevity requirements, need ECC ram for data crunching, need virtualization features, etc.)
2) The supposed advantages are 95% marketing. Uptime is more about your OS if you select quality components to go with the CPU. Longevity, seriously??? I can show you desktops built 30+ years ago that run today the same as they did then. How many CPUs actually die? I personally have had one die, it was 7 years old. Virtualization, again no more features on the 1151 Xeon versus the i7. ECC, that's the one feature an 1151 Xeon has over a similar i7. Now when we start talking multi-socket and what not well that's obvious. I've had these conversations in the past with engineers and developers at work. Everyone just assumes that when Intel says they need a Xeon to do something there is a reason. Yup, there is a reason, they can make more money from the same chip with a Xeon badge on it.
Up until very recently I had a desktop of about that vintage running SCO Unix. That ran 24/7. In fact we were scared to turn it off because it ran chunks of the factory...
There are more differences than just ECC memory. For instance i7 cpu's don't support hugetlb/hugepages, and several other 'server' focused virtualization extensions. Until Skylake though, the PCH had basically no support for needed features for SR-IOV.
Yeah, it's really off-putting to see camo. I think they're going for some kind of military/tactical thing, but Gigabyte's failed to realize that camo just makes a product look trashy and redneck to people in the US these days.
It isn't a problem with the camo, it works fine on some products and I perhaps think of MSI when I see it since they take such a military angle with their marketing.
But a camo theme doesn't belong on a workstation board. It just doesn't. If you want to see what proper workstation boards historically looked like, check out various Supermicro or Asus products, such as the P6T WS. This is a strange angle for gigabyte to take with such an expensive, niche product.
I thought the G1 line was originally branded to look military as competition for supposedly military grade competing (sabertooth, tuf ) mB s with a rugged military designs from Asus n MSI?
The G1 Killer Sniper Assasin Tactical Assault Special Ops Guerilla ... motherboard. Heh, in the end it always boils down to your mom no matter how "militarized" the motherboard's product name.
Typically Xeons are cheaper than their i7 relatives at the same specs. But when the motherboard costs double you effectively negate any savings on the CPU, and don't gain much over the i7's in terms of chipset features. I miss the Haswell days when you could slap an lga1150 Xeon in a Z87/97 for less than an i7 and get all the consumer goodies too.
Also, can someone explain why SATA Express is given PCH lanes but the regular SATA3 ports are on a ASMEDIA controller?!?! Why is SATA Express included at all anymore??? Wasn't it DOA? Has anyone ever brought a SATA Express drive to market? Has anyone ever used one? Why not free up those PCIe lanes for something useful like more PCIe expansion slots, or support for more simultaneous M.2 NVME drives?
The sata express slots works as either Sata Express (taking up 2 Sata ports per 1 Sata Express connection) or as 6 sata ports. In addition to the 2 from the asmedia controller
Kind of lame that the article says ECC about 100 times, it's a major selling point of the platform, and I can't seem to find anywhere in the article where they actually benchmark with ECC memory. This is sort of like the time when they reviewed the quad SLI motherboard without actually trying quad SLI on it, although there was a much bigger uproar.
The last time I ran some casual tests, ECC RAM of the same speed rating produced the same GB/s as non-ECC. Within the margin of error. The issue might be that you can't really find ECC RAM rated for higher speeds with XMP profiles.
Yeah, that's part of the point. It would highlight that you're probably going to get a bit lower performance from this board if you're caring about its primary feature enough to equip the namesake RAM. Instead they stuck to components that make it swappable with a much cheaper board.

There is only one thing that's worse than camo: pixelized camo.I honestly fail to understand who in the world would ever buy a socket 1150 Xeon solution instead of socket 2011.
